Chapter 11: Contract
Faith (P.O.V.)
'I'm giving you six hours. Six hours for you to decide if you want to pay the money or if you want the punishment.'
'You and your family will have to pay the fine for the damage you have done.'
'Your every movement will be under the control of this trash. You will do everything after asking me. You will live your life on my terms.'
'If I say sit, you will sit. If I say get up, you will get up. If I say walk, you will walk. If I say to talk, you will talk. If I say to eat, you will eat. If I say to be quiet, you will be quiet. In short, you will be like my maidservant.'
It is midnight, and I can't sleep.
Evan's every word and action was running through my mind like crazy.
I don't understand what Evan wants from me.
It looks like he has decided that he will make my life hell no matter what.
I couldn't get his words out of my mind all day.
I feel like that is all I have been doing lately.
Evan Owens is the only person I think about all day.
He put me in such a helpless situation. I don't even know what to do.
You know what, now I'm even beginning to doubt if the accident was real.
Evan freaking Owens probably sent his friend to go under my car purposely so that he could blackmail me into following his orders.
But then the poor boy was bleeding so much.
He was in so much pain, and he was also unconscious. And the doctors also said he was critical.
Ugh, I hate Evan Owens.
No, not Evan Owens --- Arrogance Owens!
That's precisely what he is. He is arrogant, insolent, rude, impolite, wicked, disrespectful, evil, mean, arrogant, narcissistic, selfish, and, ugh, that's all I can come up with now.
I have to do something, though.
If Dad and Grandma find out, I almost ran over a boy- no, not just any boy. I ran over a rich boy.
My dad and Grandma will kill me.
They will kick me out of the house and out of their life.
God, what am I going to do? How will I get out of this mess?
____________________________________________________________
I couldn't get much sleep all night.
It was so hard to get out of bed the following day that I couldn't get my legs to move.
"What's wrong? Why ain't you up yet?"
I looked up and saw Grandma standing at the door.
"Grandma.." I groaned.
"It's 7:00 a.m.," Grandma said, sitting on my bed. "You're always up before 6, so why ain't you up yet?"
"Grandma, I couldn't sleep all night, and now I feel lazy," I said. "I don't want to get out of bed and go to school."
"What are you worried about that you couldn't sleep all night?"
"Grandma, that stupid Arrogance freaking Owens is driving me crazy. Grandma, he is r-"
"I've been tryin' to get you to date for so long, and now you finally decided to date somebody. I'm so happy you're finally in love. A boy is driving you crazy."
My eyes widened.
"EWWWW!" I yelled, jumping out of bed. "Grandma, no! It's nothing like that."
"Girl, why are you freakin' out like that?" Grandma said, looking confused. "And nothin' like what?"
"Grandma, ew! He bullies me. He has ruined my life. I hate him so much. I don't want to go to school and see his annoying face."
"What did he do that you hate him so much and don't want to see his face?"
"Grandma, you know I hit his f-"
I stopped before I finished the sentence.
I didn't even realize what I was about to do.
I was about to spill everything to Grandma.
Everything that happened this past weekend.
How can I be so careless?
"You hit what?" Grandma said, confused.
I sat on the bed, feeling confused.
I don't know what to do.
I can't look at her in the face and lie to her.
Maybe this is my chance to fix my mistake. My only chance to get this burden off my chest. I should tell her everything about that night and what Evan is planning.
"Grandma, this past weekend I h-"
"Oh god, Faith, look at the clock." Grandma interrupted. "It's gettin' late. School starts at 7:50, and your dad must get to work on time. Please get up and get ready quickly. I will pick a beautiful dress and sandals for you while you shower."
"But grandma, I want to talk to you."
Grandma stood up, walking over to the closet.
"Talk to me later when you are back from school." She said, looking through the clothes.
This was my only chance to talk to grandma.
I will never get another chance to tell her anything.
Looks like I'm destined to face all these problems.
My life will never be problem-free.
I will face a new problem daily, and Evan Owens always waits for the right time to attack.
Ugh, I curse the day he entered my life.
"Faith, I'm goin' downstairs," Grandma said, walking out of the room. "Get dressed and come down fo' breakfast."
~*~
I didn't think I would make it to school on time, but I did, thanks to Grandma.
She picked out my clothes for me ahead of time and made me breakfast.
I would have been late to school if it weren't for her.
I went straight to my locker to get some books out for English class.
Max was already there waiting for me when I got to my locker.
"We were supposed to meet at the library at seven sharp this morning," Max said, looking disappointed.
"I know," I said. " I'm sorry. I woke up late this morning."
"What's wrong? You seem tensed."
Max is genuinely a fantastic friend. He always knows it when I'm tense.
Why can't Evan be like that? Why can't he be understanding and show some humanity?
Wait- who am I kidding? Evan Owens and humanity. He is not human at all. He's an animal. He's a devil. He's e-
"Are we talking about me?"
A very annoying voice asked, interrupting my thoughts.
Max and I looked back to see Evan Owens standing there with one hand in his pocket while he held a file in the other hand.
People started to empty the hallway as soon as they saw Evan.
Max started to get nervous as Evan walked towards us.
"Everybody left the moment they saw me, but it seems like spectacles right here just don't seem to fear me," Evan said, looking Max straight in the eyes.
"Max.. um.. I'll see you at lunch," I said. "You should go before you're late to class."
Max shook his head nervously and walked away.
Evan started to chuckle after Max left.
"I don't understand what a girl like you is doing with that cartoon," Evan said, shaking his head.
"What do you mean a girl like me?" I asked in annoyance.
Evan looked at me from head to toe in a peculiar way.
I never seen him looking at me like this.
"W-Why-a-are you looking a-at me like that?" I asked, turning away.
I looked around and noticed that the hallway was empty.
We were the only ones in the hallway.
Evan is always up to something when he empties a place.
I needed to get out of here before he did something.
"Evan, I don't have any time for this," I said. "I'm getting late to class, so I'm leaving."
He just continued looking at me.
I got ready to leave, and he grabbed my hand.
I turned to face him, and he was standing there holding my hand with a smirk.
"Leave my hand!" I scowled, pulling my hand away.
Evan chuckled, shaking his head.
"Read this." He said, holding a file in front of my face.
"What is this?" I said, taking the file.
"This? I can't believe you're asking this. I gave you six hours to decide, not to forget everything."
"Evan, I can't be y-"
"Yes, you can. And that is exactly why I made this contract."
"Contract?"
"Yeah, I mean, can you believe it? I spent almost all day getting my lawyer to make this contract yesterday."
I raised my eyebrows, looking through the papers.
"I want this deal to be legally covered, so I got the contract done," Evan said, putting his hands in his pocket.
"Evan, look, I don't know what you're talking about, but-"
"You don't know what I'm talking about? I'm talking about the deal in which you will save your family and be my personal maidservant."
I looked up at Evan, and he smiled sarcastically.
"This contract has all the details," Evan said, walking back and forth. "Who you hit, when you hit him, the price for the damages you caused him, etc!"
I looked back down at the file to read it.
"And most importantly, read over here," Evan said, pointing at a sentence at the bottom of the contract. "It states that you will pay in cash. Now, you don't have the money, so to pay the money back, you will work for me."
I looked up at Evan, closing the file.
"Listen, Evan, all of this is bullshit," I said. "I am n-"
"This is not bullshit!" Evan growled. "You don't have a say in this. I gave you six hours to decide. You don't have any money now, so you must work for me."
"What the hell? Are you out of your mind?"
"Excuse me? Am I out of my mind? You see, this is why I'm so interested in you. You're different. You dare to go against Evan Owens. The audacity to fight, challenge, and humiliate me in front of everybody. That's why this is happening to you. You work for me for one hundred days; you can repay the damage you have done through those services."
"What!? One hundred days! No!Never! I'm not going to be anybody's maid or servant."
"Fine, then I can just go straight to Mr. Wyatt and inform him about the person who hit his son—the person because of whom he has to pay so many hospital bills. Then I'm sure your father will be ready with all the money, and that too in cash. Sadly, the mistake is yours, but your family must pay for it. I mean it's okay with me I don't mind calling Mr. Wyatt right now."
Evan pulled his phone out to make the call.
"Evan, no!" I exclaimed. "I-I-I- Uh- I- agree to everything you say."
"I want your signature on this contract now," Evan said, putting his phone away.
I nodded, pulled a pen from my bag, and signed it.
"Good girl!" Evan said, looking at my signatures. "You know, since we met, this is the first time that you have impressed me. How did you turn out to be so intelligent? For the first time, you have made a smart choice."
I rolled my eyes, crossing my arms over my chest.
"Now, I wouldn't do that if I was you," Evan said with a smirk. "Seriously, I wouldn't because you became my servant with these signatures, and I am your boss. Now, let's discuss some essential rules in this contract----
Rule #1
YOU ARE ALWAYS TO ADDRESS ME WITH SIR.
Rule #2
YOU WILL DO EVERYTHING I SAY WITHOUT ARGUING OR ASKING ANY QUESTIONS.
RULE #3
YOU WILL ALWAYS FOLLOW ME. YOU WILL GO EVERYWHERE I GO. YOU'LL BE JUST LIKE MY SHADOW.
RULE #4
YOU WILL ONLY OBEY ME. YOU WILL NOT LISTEN TO ANYBODY ELSE. I'M YOUR BOSS AND YOU WILL OBEY ONLY ME.
RULE #5
I DON'T WANT TO SEE THAT CONFIDENCE IN YOUR EYES ANYMORE. I HATE IT. IT IRRITATES ME. THEREFORE, I SHOULD ALWAYS SEE FEAR IN THOSE EYES.
RULE #6
NEVER, AND I MEAN NEVER, SPEAK TO ME IN A RUDE, LOUD, AND DISRESPECTFUL TONE.
--Those are the six main rules I want you to remember. There's more, but I don't have time to discuss all of them."
"Yes," I said, nodding my head.
"Yes? Yes, what? Do I have to repeat rule number one?"
I clenched my teeth in anger.
"Yes, sir," I said with a weak smile.
"Good!" Evan said, smiling. "Now, I'm leaving, but at lunch, I want my food in front of me at the snap of a finger. My food shouldn't be a minute late or early. Do I make myself clear?"
"Yes, sir."
"I'm thrilled you're learning so much on the first day. Just imagine how intelligent you will become because of me."
I was feeling so angry.
I wanted to give him an answer for every rule he gave me, but I can't.
I can't do that because my family would have had to pay for my carelessness. I already lost a lot in life, and now I can't lose my family.
If working under Evan will save my family, I will do it.
I will work under him and abide by all his rules.
~*~
I left class as soon as the bell rang before lunch.
I needed to get to the cafeteria on time and get Evan's lunch.
His words ran in my mind all day, and I didn't want to do anything that could cause me more problems.
'My food shouldn't be a minute late or early.'
I wanted to avoid drama, so I got his lunch on time and started to wait for him.
The moment Evan walked into the cafeteria, I walked behind him with the plate of food.
Everybody's attention was on me as they were all whispering to one another about me.
I followed Evan to his table, where all his friends sat.
I put the plate down right after he sat down.
Everybody at his table started to look at me.
Jake and the other boys whispered, and Brittany and her friends looked disgusted.
"Um... please tell me what this girl is doing here?" Brittany asked with a disgusted face.
"Yeah, Evan," Jake said. "I mean, not that I mind. I think she's pretty cute, but I thought she was the enemy."
"Guys, meet my shadow," Evan said with a smirk.
"Shadow? Brittany asked. "What do you mean, babe?"
And then you won't believe what Evan Owens did.
Evan Owens picked up his milk carton and dropped it on his right shoe, spilling it everywhere.
Everybody gasped. Even I gasped at this action of his. What the hell was he planning to do?
"Shadow, I want you to clean my shoe," Evan said, looking up at me.
Did he tell me to clean his shoe?
He wants me to clean his shoes that he purposely dirtied.
No, there's no way I will clean Evan's shoe.
"Shadow, I'm talking to you," Evan said impatiently.
"Evan, I'm n-"
"Evan!" Evan said, looking me straight in the eyes. "Did you just call me Evan?"
I was about to answer him, but then I noticed his hand.
Evan's hand is on the contract file.
He kept tapping on the contract file while he was talking. He tried reminding me of the contract and the rules I agreed to follow.
I'm in a legal mess if I don't follow the rules or everything stated in the file.
According to the contract, he can even take me to court if I disobeyed his rules.
"I'm sorry, sir," I said, getting napkins to clean his shoe. "I will clean it right away."
I knelt to clean the milk.
I looked around me and saw that every eye was on me.
Everybody was looking at me.
Some people took their phones out to record the scene while others giggled.
Max was standing there near our table, looking helpless.
I started to clean the milk off Evan's shoe.
"Damn, babe, for the first time today, you have shown her where she belongs," Brittany said happily, taking a picture.
"Wow, Evan!" Jake exclaimed. "You know, I respect you even more now."
Evan chuckled, shaking his head as he looked down at me.
His eyes were mocking and making fun of me.
I got up after I finished cleaning his shoe.
I slung my bag over my shoulder and was about to leave when Evan Owens picked up a juice carton from one of his friends' trays and put the juice all over me.
There was juice all over my dress.
Everybody started to laugh and record everything.
"What the hell is wrong with you!?" Evan yelled, standing up. "This is such a crappy lunch! I told you to bring me something tasty, not crappy!"
Then he picked up his lunch and threw his food on the floor.
"Do you expect me to eat this trash!?" Evan growled, pointing at the food on the floor.
Brittany and everybody else from the table stood up as well, continuing to record so that they could humiliate me on social media.
One of the ladies who worked at the cafeteria came running with a broom and a bag to put the trash in.
"Thank you for bringing something to clean up this mess, but this girl will take it from you," Evan said. "She will clean it up."
"It's okay, I can clean it." The lady said.
Evan looked at me and gestured me to clean the trash.
That's precisely what I did.
I went to the floor and started to clean the trash.
There was loud laughter in the cafeteria as they were all enjoying this.
I cleaned up the trash and put it in the small bag the lady gave me.
I returned the bag to the lady, and she left with the trash.
Evan sighed, putting his hands in his pocket.
Then he walked towards me.
He came very close to me.
Close enough to close the gap between us.
"Welcome to my world," Evan whispered in my ears. "Now, I will show you what true humiliation is. I will make your life such a living hell that you will regret the day you came in front of my car."
I looked away, feeling humiliated, embarrassed, helpless, and angry.
Evan stepped back and picked up the contract folder from where he left it.
"Isn't it strange how, in this very cafeteria, this girl had called Evan Owens trash!?" Evan shouted so everybody could hear. "She spilled trash all over me and said that I was nothing but trash! Here we are again in this very cafeteria, and she is the one who cleaned up my trash off the floor!"
"Now, you tell me," Evan said, looking into my eyes. "Who's the real trash? Me or you?"
I clenched my fist in anger.
Evan took his revenge for the day that I accidentally spilled his lunch on him.
He stooped so low to take revenge for something that I didn't even do on purpose.
"What a pity!" Evan said, shaking his head.
He started to walk away with a smirk on his face.
"What a loser!" Brittany said, laughing with her friends.
They all followed Evan out of the cafeteria.
Max came after they left.
He picked my bag up from the floor for me.
People were still standing there with their phones out. They made me sick. All of them are hypocrites. Nobody has the guts to speak against Evan Owens for his wrong deeds.
But then, who am I to blame them?
I am in this condition because I went against him. I can't even do anything to get out of this situation. He was doing all this because I acted wise with him.
I should not have done that. I should have never gone against Evan Owens.
Everything here, and I mean everything here, is under his control.
I made a big mistake crossing his path because now he won't spare me.
Evan Owens will not stop until he gets his revenge.
"Are you okay?" Max asked, concerned.
I nodded my head slowly and started to walk away from all the cameras that were recording me.
I wanted to get away from the loud laughter and all the faces that were mocking me.
As I started to walk away, tears welled up in my eyes.
I couldn't stop them.
No, I am not okay, Max.
Evan humiliated me in front of everybody today.
He punished me for something that I didn't do. He made me a laughing stock in front of everybody.
I will never forgive Evan Owens for what he has done today.
Never!
I hate him.
I hate Evan Owens with all my heart.
