Chapter 8: Murderer
On Saturday, Grandma got Dad to let me borrow the car for the night.
It was his day off, so asking him for the car was easy.
I couldn't go out during the day because Dad had some errands, but he gave me the keys at 7:00.
It was dark out so that I couldn't go anywhere, and since I didn't know California inside and out, I called Max and asked if he wanted to do something.
Max, being Max, didn't know what to do because he didn't go out at all.
I told him I would come over to his place, and then we could eat.
He was refusing at first, but then I managed to convince him.
As I was driving over to Max's, my phone rang.
I picked it up as if it was Grandma.
I had a bad feeling about the call because I had just left the house fifteen minutes ago, and there was already a call from grandma.
"Hey grandma, is everything all right?" I asked curiously.
"No, babe, nothing is all right," Grandma said.
"Why, grandma? What happened?"
"It's Keisha."
I knew it!
Keisha will never let me live in peace.
She has made my life hell.
The day I planned to relax, she came with a new drama.
I am sick of Keisha.
She has nothing to do other than create tension for everybody.
Now, I wonder what the new havoc she created at home is.
"Keisha came home very drunk," Grandma said. "When your daddy asked her why she was in that condition, she pushed him. I tried to talk to her, but she ran to the kitchen and held a knife against her neck."
"WHAT!?" I yelled, stepping on the brake. "Grandma, is Keisha okay?"
"Yes, she is okay. She only did it to warn us."
"What do you mean?"
"She warned us that she would slit her throat or cut her arm if anybody ever tried to interfere in her life. She also said that she would go to the cops and make a complaint that your daddy and I physically abused her."
"Oh my god! What is wrong with her?"
"She left without tellin' anybody anythin'. We don't even know where she went in that condition."
"Grandma, please don't cry. I am on my way right now. I will be home in twenty minutes. Until then, please calm down. Who will console Dad if you break down? Please, Grandma."
"Yes, your right. Your daddy is very upset. He will lose it if there ain't anybody to console him. Please, come home soon."
After I hung up, I made a U-turn and headed back home.
I couldn't believe what I just heard on the phone.
I knew Keisha was a bitch, but this was just too much.
How can she behave with Dad and Grandma like that?
Our Dad and Grandma have always been with us through everything.
Dad ensured we never faced difficulties, and Grandma was always our friend.
We are the world to them, so I don't know why she is doing this.
Keisha has no idea how much she hurts them with her behavior.
I have had enough of her.
We need to talk today.
Keisha has to stop what she is doing.
I will not let her ruin what is left of this family.
I was so engulfed with my thoughts that I didn't notice somebody was walking in the middle of the road.
*** Beep...Beep...Beep...***
I pressed the horn, but whoever it was seemed not to notice.
By the time I stepped on the brake, there was a scream.
"Aaahhhh!"
After the car stopped, I started to freak out.
My brain stopped functioning.
Somebody screamed.
Did I just kill someone?
I quickly unfastened my seat belt and got out of the car.
When I got out, I saw a boy lying on the floor.
I ran to help him, but when I got there, I saw that his blood was everywhere.
He had lost a lot of blood.
I sat down to see if he was breathing, but I couldn't tell.
"IS ANYBODY HERE?" I screamed. "HELP! PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ME!"
I saw his phone next to him and picked it up to see if I could contact someone.
My hand was shaking badly.
I didn't know what to do.
I went to the phone app, and my eyes widened.
I couldn't believe my eyes as he had several missed calls from Evan Owens.
I started to panic more when I saw Evan's name.
Why does this always happen to me? Why is everything in my life linked to Evan Owens? What is his relationship with this person?
It was all so frustrating.
Shaking, I called his number.
After a while, Evan picked up the call.
"Ray! What's up, man?" He answered. "I have been calling you for so long. Why didn't you p-"
"Hello..... Hello," I said in a shaky voice.
"Who is this?"
"It's me, Faith. Evan, I-I-I'm on Ridge Road. I-I-I-I think I just ran over somebody. I need to take him to the hospital. There is nobody here who can help me. I-I-I-I don't what to do!"
"WHAT!? You hit Ray!?"
"I don't know who he is. He was crossing the road, and I-my car-Evan, I just ran over him! Evan, do something! Please help me!"
"What the hell is wrong with you!? What the hell do you think of yourself!? What were you doing that you ran over him!? If you don't know how to drive, then why the fuck are you on the road!?"
"EVAN, STOP IT! This is not the time to fight! He might lose his life! I need to take him to the hospital!
"Where did you say you were?"
"I'm-I'm on R-R-Ridge Road."
"Ridge Road? I'm far from there. Do one thing: take him with you and go straight to the hospital. I'll meet you there. Listen to me very carefully; go straight from wherever you are. Take the first right, keep driving, and then take the second left. Then, when you get there, you will find the hospital on your right."
"O-O-O-Okay."
I immediately hung up so that I could head for the hospital.
With difficulty, I managed to get the boy in the back seat.
After I got him in the car, I noticed that his blood was all over my hand.
I got this unsettling feeling.
I couldn't stand the sight and the smell of the blood.
These past two years, I couldn't stand blood at all.
Whenever I saw blood, I freaked out and panicked.
The blood just brought back pain that I wanted to get rid of, but I must help this boy.
He needs my help, and I can't think about myself and my miseries when somebody is about to lose his life because of my carelessness.
I got in the car and started to drive.
I kept looking at the back seat to see how his condition was.
Something didn't look right, so I stopped the car.
I went to the back to see how he was.
"He's not breathing! Have I killed him?" I said to myself. "I need help. Sh*t! What am I going to do?"
I have to do something.
I cannot give up.
This boy's life is in my hands. He needs me. I have to help him. I need water so that I can get him conscious again. I went to the driver's seat and started to look for water. I searched the car's front, back, and trunk. I checked everywhere, but there was not a bottle of water in there. I looked around me and saw that the place I was at led to the woods. I decided to go into the woods to find water. I started to run into the woods. I ran without stopping. I didn't even stop to catch my breath. I took a left and kept running. I ran and ran until I saw a waterfall. I found a waterfall but didn't know where to fill the water. I looked around to find something. Luckily, I found this brown thing that was round like a bowl. It looked like some fruit that somebody ate. I used it since it was round. I somehow managed to get water in that round thing and ran back to the car. After I got to the car, I fed him the water, and he started to cough.
"Thank god he's alive," I said, sighing. "Listen, whoever you are, please don't get worried. I will take you to the hospital. You'll be fine. Just hang on there."
I went to the driver's seat, fastened my seat belt, started the car, and drove straight to the hospital.
__________________________________________________
At the hospital, the doctors and Evan put the boy on a stretcher to take him into the operating theater.
The doctor came out after a while.
"Is he related to you?" The doctor asked Evan.
"Yes, he is my friend," Evan answered. "His name is Ray Wyatt. He is 17 years old, and his blood group is O-negative."
"We need his parents before we can start treatment."
"Yes, they are on the way now. I already informed them, but I will get his father on the line with you so that his treatment can at least start."
"Alright, that's fine. However, this is a road accident and a police case. We will have to inform them about it."
I started to panic when I heard it was a police case.
What am I going to tell my Dad and Grandma?
This is the one time Dad let me borrow a car, and I messed it up.
What will be his reaction after he finds out that I hit somebody?
If his reaction to a phone call from school was so bad, how much worse would it be if he received one from the police?
I have caused him so much pain that now I don't have the strength to cause him more.
This time, he will be shattered to pieces.
He will lose the little strength he has to cope with all the problems in the family.
Before I do anything at the moment, I need to make sure that Ray is okay.
"God, I hope he is okay," I said nervously after the doctor left.
"WOW!" Evan exclaimed. "Poor Faith Davis! You're feeling terrible, huh!? It's a damn police case now!"
"I didn't mean to hit him, Evan. I hope he is alright. I-I-"
"Just let it be!"
I started to feel tears bursting in my eyes.
Evan was making me out to be this evil person.
I didn't hit him on purpose. It was an accident.
Everything happened so fast that it was too late when I stepped on the brakes, and I had already hit him.
Evan started to pace back and forth.
Watching him pace, I started to get worried.
I touched the necklace on my neck and moved it around in tension.
We sat out there for over an hour, waiting for the doctor's results.
I went near the operation theater and looked inside through the little window.
I saw that they were still cleaning the blood off of him.
They didn't even start his treatment yet. This brought me more tension.
What if they were hurting him more by delaying his treatment?
"Please tell us what you saw in detail," The officer said to Evan after he came.
I started to get this weird feeling in my stomach.
I felt like I was in a mess that I could never get out of.
Evan hated me so much that he was going to do everything possible to see me in pain.
Especially after everything that happened in the cafeteria the other day. I know that he will not spare me.
"According to the doctors, your friend was really drunk." The officer said. "Who's car was it that hit him? Who was driving it?"
I sat there in tension while Evan stood in silence.
He looked at me and then looked back at the officer.
"I was driving the car," Evan said.
I stood up after I heard him say that.
I don't understand what he is doing.
Why is he lying to the cops?
"Ray called me to pick him up because he had drunk too much." Evan continued. "I was almost there to pick him up when he suddenly came in the middle of the road. I tried to step on the brakes, but it was too late. Ray was not in his senses."
"What was your speed?"
"I was driving the speed limit in that area. I didn't pass 30 miles per hour."
After Evan finished, the officer observed him and then looked toward me.
"And who is she?" He asked.
"Um... Um, she is with me." Evan replied.
"Were you present too when this accident took place?" The officer asked me.
The way the officer was looking at me made me nervous.
I didn't know what to say to him.
I looked at Evan.
His eyes seemed to be telling me to go along with him.
"Y-Y-Yes...Um...w-we were both going to pick up Ray when he came in front of the car," I said. "He was very drunk."
"Um...Uh... It's okay, Faith." Evan assured me. "Everything will be alright, so don't worry."
I shook my head slowly, unaware of Evan's behavior.
The officer stood there silently for a while, looking at both of us.
"Thank you for your statement, Mr. Owens." He said. "We will stay in touch with you if we need anything else."
"Alright," Evan said with a weak smile.
The officer left after shaking hands with Evan.
Evan put his head against the wall behind him.
He closed his eyes, sighing heavily.
I walked up to him slowly.
"Evan, t-t-thank you so much," I said. "I don't know what to say."
"You don't have to say anything!" Evan growled. "I did not do this for you!"
Evan rolled his eyes and walked away.
I just stood there feeling guilty about the problem I caused tonight.
I had to apologize, so I went after Evan.
I saw Evan sitting in the waiting room that Ray was in.
He looked very stressed.
I have never seen him that stressed before, ever since I met him.
Ray must be significant because Evan Owens is concerned for somebody else.
He is thinking about somebody other than himself.
"Evan, I-- I just wanted to apologize to you for tonight," I said. "I am very sorry f-"
"JUST SHUT UP!" Evan yelled.
Everybody around us who was also sitting in the waiting room looked up.
Some nurses who were passing by stopped.
"Please, keep it quiet in the hospital." One of the nurses said. "We need silence so our patients can get the most efficient care."
Evan rolled his eyes like always.
The nurses looked at each other.
"We are sorry, ma'am," I said. "We will not disturb a-"
Before I could finish the sentence, Evan pulled me by the arm.
Everybody looked up at us as we walked by.
He pulled me into a room where we were alone.
"Evan, what are you doing?" I asked. "Why did you b-"
Before I could finish again, Evan grabbed me by the arms and pushed me against the wall.
He was holding my arms so tight that it started to pain.
"STOP YOUR GODDAMN DRAMA!" He yelled. "DO YOU THINK I LIED FOR YOU? HELL, IF THE POLICE WERE TO TORTURE YOU, THERE WOULD BE NOBODY, AND I MEAN NOBODY, HAPPIER THAN ME! DO YOU GET THAT!?"
He was hurting me, and he didn't even realize it.
"Evan... Evan--- y--y--you're hurting me." I said in pain.
"I DON'T GIVE A DAMN!" He yelled.
Evan held my arms more tightly.
"I want this drama to end because you have already done enough for tonight!" He finished, finally letting go of me.
My head hit the wall after he pushed me back.
My arms became red.
They were hurting so much.
"F***ing murderer!" Evan said.
"Just stop!" I said in frustration. "Why are you behaving like an animal? And do you think I did all of this on purpose? How can you even say that?"
Evan scoffed, rolling his eyes.
"Y-Y-You called me a murderer," I said. " I'm...I'm a murderer."
I could hear my voice breaking.
I couldn't control my tears anymore.
How could Evan call me a murderer?
My whole world came crashing down.
It's been two years since I have heard that word.
It felt like two years ago all over again.
The pain was becoming unbearable.
I didn't want to cry and look weak before Evan Owens, but I couldn't help.
"Yes, you are!" Evan said. "You are a fucking murderer."
I could no longer control myself as I continued sobbing.
"I have had enough of this!" Evan said. "I need you out of here right now! I don't need you, and neither does Ray! I don't want to see your face any-"
Evan stopped as soon as his eyes landed on my arms.
Even though it was brief, it seemed like his face softened a little.
He turned his back to me, clenching his fist in anger.
Without another word, he stormed out of the room.
''F***ing murderer!"
Evan's words were ringing in my ears.
They took me back to my life two years ago.
*** Flashback ***
"WHAT THE HELL FAITH!?" Keisha yelled. "YOU TOOK HER AWAY FROM US! SHE IS GONE, AND IT IS ALL YOUR FAULT!!"
"Keisha, I'm sorry...I didn't mean to hurt you or anybody else." I said, crying.
Dad was standing there.
I started to walk towards him, but he turned away before I could say anything.
"Dad, please don't turn away," I said. "Please don't! I'm sorry, Dad. If I knew this was going to happen, I would ha-"
"YOU WOULD HAVE WHAT?" Keisha interrupted. "WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE? MURDERED ALL OF US TOO?"
Grandma and I gasped at the same time.
"Keisha, no!.." I said. "Why...Why would I...I do that?"
"BECAUSE YOU ARE A MURDERER FAITH!" Keisha said. "YOU ARE A MURDERER."
*** Flashback ***
My pain grew more unbearable as I reflected on my life two years ago.
Am I that bad of a person? Are Evan, Dad, and Keisha right? Am I a murderer?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I reached home around midnight.
When I came in, I saw Grandma on the couch.
She woke up to the sound of the keys.
"Faith," She said, standing up. "Babe, where have you been? I was so worried 'bout you. I called you many times, but you ain't pick up."
"Grandma.. m-m-my phone died," I said, looking down at the floor.
"What's wrong, babe?" Grandma asked. "Why do you look so gloomy?
"Grandma...I'm sorry I came home so late. I can explain, though."
"Not now. You should change and go to sleep. It is very late, so we can talk tomorrow."
"But Grandma, I need to tell you something."
"All right, but go freshen up first."
I nodded my head and went to the room.
Grandma had already slept by the time I was done freshening up and changing.
She is so innocent and beautiful.
I lay on her lap and started to reflect on my day.
It was supposed to be a fantastic Saturday.
It was the day I could relax and stay stress-free, but it didn't go as planned.
I nearly killed a boy today.
I nearly killed Evan Owens's best friend.
The police came, and Evan Owens lied to them but didn't do it for me.
I started to get a bizarre feeling in my stomach.
Evan Owens will not spare me.
He might not have said anything about the cafeteria drama and the accident, but I know he is planning my downfall.
On Monday, my life will probably take a new turn because Evan Owens will take his revenge.
