The dragons of Berk were bustling with excitement. Mating season was upon us. For the most part, every was excited. I, however, had nothing, or rather, no one, to look forward to. The vast majority of dragons in Berk had a mate to spend their lives with. There was only one dragon I could see myself with, and I felt as though I had no chance with her.
"You only have a week to confess. You know that right?" Hookfang landed beside me in the field. All of our owners were currently working on a project for Berk, giving most of the dragons some freetime.
"You've said that every year since Berk became dragon friendly. I've never done anything about it," I rumbled, wings fluttering in frustration.
"Well this year, I'm not letting you off the hook. I've learned a lot from Snotlout, so you can count on me to help you."
"You think Snotlout knows anything?" I snorted, "That oaf couldn't charm anything dead or alive."
"Maybe not, but he has confidence. That's what you need," Hookfang nudged me with his wing, "If you don't do something soon, she's going to get a mate, and it won't be you."
"Hookfang!" Hookfang blew some smoke out of his nose, before taking flight to reunite with his owner.
I looked out at the skyline, bristled. Hookfang had a point. I had been waiting for years to tell Stormfly how I really felt. If I didn't move fast, she would be taken by someone else. That was the last thing I wanted.
"(Y/n), come on boy, we've got a few things to do."
I spread out my wings, flapping them a few times before taking off. I had to do something, somehow.

The first chance I had to confess to Stormfly was during Dragon Racing. It probably wasn't the best idea, but I was so nervously excited that waiting felt like torture.
"Hey Stormfly," I swooped under her, using my claws to take the prize sheep from her, speeding up a bit so her and Astrid would stay behind me, "I um, well I don't really know how to-"
"Yoink!"
"Hookfang!" I growled as the dragon took the sheep from me, rushing to catch up and get it back, "You said you would help me! That didn't help at all!"
"Dragon Racing doesn't count, it's time for competition. I can't be your wingman," Hookfang cackled, blowing some steam out of his nose.
Attempt one failed.

Attempt two was something I thought would go a bit better. A few days after the Dragon Race, the dragons were getting armor upgrades from Gobber and Hiccup. The majority of the others were outside messing around, but Stormfly and I were inside getting fitted.
"So, um, you did good at the race yesterday," I attempted to start a conversation. Shifting when a new saddle was placed on my back.
"You did good too. Was there something you wanted to tell me before Hookfang took the sheep?" Stormfly turned.
"Yes, actually, you know it's mating season, and I was wondering i-"
I cut myself off, letting out a small stream of fire in surprise when something was pressed against my tail. Gobber grumbled in frustraion, throwing a pail of water over the embers I had created.
"Sorry about that," Hiccup apologized, "New tail piece, probably should have warned you. But, you're done, go ahead and show it off. Stormfly, I'm just about done with you, but it might take a bit."
I sighed, hesitantly stomping out of the workshop. Attempt two failed.

"Hey (Y/n), guess what," Hookfang trotted over to me, "Stormfly's owner is letting her go out for a flight on her own. Something about her going out with Hiccup. Anyways, you can go with her."
"Yeah, I'll have to get my owner to let me go out. Thanks for letting me know Hookfang."
"Don't chicken out this time. If you do, everyone will be after you," Hookfang joked, slapping my back with his tail, "Be nice, don't be weird like Snotlout."
"I thought you said I should be more like him?"
"That was before I saw him fail yet again in trying to flirt with a girl yesterday. Now you better hurry."
I ran off to my owner, nudging his side lightly. He nearly dropped the basket he was holding. I guess 'lightly' was a bit off. I was struggling to handle my excitement.
"What is it boy?"
I cooed, tilting my head towards Stormfly. My owner looked at me in confusion. I ruffled my wings to imitate flying, then motioned towards Stormfly again.
"Oh, hey Astrid," the blonde girl looked towards my owner, "Are you taking Stormfly out for a flight soon?"
"She's going out for one on her own," Astrid called back, "Hiccup needs some help mapping so I thought it'd be nice for her to stretch her wings."
"Mind if (Y/n) joins her?"
"What do you think Stormfly?"
"Sure, I'm sure it'll be fun," Stormfly gave me a smile, which probably looked extremely strange to her owner.
"I think she said yes. You two have fun then, don't feel rushed," Astrid gave a short wave as a goodbye.
Stormfly spread out her wings, taking flight. I nudged my owner's side again, purring in thanks. I then spread my own wings and flew after Stormfly.
"Where do you want to go?"
"Not sure," Stormfly became silent, lost in thought, "Hiccup and AStrid found a new island the other day. We can go there."
The two of us changed directions, allowing the wing drafts to carry us. I spent a long time trying to think of something that would let us have a casual conversation, but nothing was coming to ming.
Silence reigned over us for the majority of the trip. I twasn't suffocating or uncomfortable like I thought it would be. My eyes wandered over to Stormfly, admiring her.
"You see it up ahead?" Stormfly speaking broke my thoughts, "It's beautiful, isn't it?"
"You are, it is! It is."
We landed on a cliff facing the ocean. We left Berk in the evening, meaning the sun was just barely peeking out from the horizon. Stars were flickering with life, the moon starting its time to shine.
"I'm really glad you came out here with me," Stormfly confessed, "There's something I really need to ask you."
"I need to ask you something too," I admitted, "Want to say it at the same time?"
"Sure. One, two, three."
"Do you want to be my mate?"
"Can you be my mate?"
We stared at each other, stunned into silence. Neither of us believed what the other had just asked. How could we? I was the first one to speak again.
"You want me to be your mate?"
"Well, I mean, yeah. Meatlug has been trying to get me to tell you that. You want me to be yours?"
"Yeah. Hookfang has been helping me figure out how to tell you."
"Well this is perfect," Stormfly nuzzled against me.
Attempt three successful.

"They're going to hatch soon," I noticed, eyes trained on the nest of three eggs.
"Of course they are," Stormfly motioned her head towards the waiting Chief of Berk, "Hiccup is more excited than we are."
"Something about crossbreeds? I'm not entirely sure what that means but-"
I immediately stopped talking when I saw one of the eggs begin to hatch. The other two followed suit soon after. Hiccup, Astrid, and my owner stepped forward, watching with the same intensity that Stormfly and I were.
One head popped out, then another, and another. Finally, all three dragon babies were stepping out of their shells and into their world. Stormfly rushed forward to cuddle them, and I was close behind.
"They look amazing," Astrid gawked.
"I need to draw them. Where's my notebook?" Hiccup began to desperately search for his notebook, as if the babies were going to take off and never return at that very moment.
As I looked at the hatchlings, something clicked in my mind. A strange coincidence, or perhaps a sign from the universe about something. Three hatchlings, three tries to ask Stormfly to be my mate.
"The number three is lucky for us," I told Stormfly, nudging one of the hatchlings gently.
"Lucky or not, I'm glad all this happened."
"Me too."
