Chapter 10: Close Calls

Dr. Evansby (who once was

"Anonymous")

Breathing in the fresh air of the Canadian forest brought me a sense of calmness. This was the first time in months that I've been anywhere else besides my lab. My time in isolation, spending countless hours studying my research, has prepared me for today. Today, we are finding all the rebels, and we will stop them once and for all. Either that, or they can join us. I mean, we're all mutants, and we're all in this together, right? Why rebel against your own kind?

I have some of the best mutants around in my army. They're all so powerful and have so much potential. For instance, there's Charlie. He was one of my first recruits, and a wonderful mutant he is, indeed. The only issue with him is he's dark and way too secretive. I had to read his mind to know more about him. I figured out he was fifteen years old, a juvenile delinquent, once did drugs and smoked cigarettes, and mostly he's had a very rough life. The poor kid was abandoned because his family and friends were frightened of his mutation. This is why I took him in with me. I was even more pleased with his ability to manipulate fire with his hands.

"Boss, you're wasting your time daydreaming again. We have to move." Charlie's voice interrupted my thoughts. I dozed off into daydreams quite often, now that I think about it.

"What did I tell you about telling me what to do? Control yourself, Charlie," I told him sternly. Charlie thinks he's the boss of everyone, and tends to have his own way of doing everything. His temper is worst of all of it.

"Whatever. Just give me a cue when your ready for me to kill someone," he muttered, lighting a cigarette with his finger as he walked away. It gets harder and harder to be patient with him. I told myself to ignore him, because this today wasn't about Charlie. It was about finally destroying the rebellion, and all the rebels involved with it.

My job is to stand here and listen for any signals from my other mutants. We're each connected together through earpieces, so we can know if any of us have found the colony or the rebels. I had to admit, the rebels were very clever people, since they managed to hide from us so long. But today, that changes. My powers have gotten stronger, and my ability to sense other mutants is on its highest level. I can practically smell where the underground colony is.

A faint ding went off through my earpiece. Someone must have found something. I almost was startled when a frantic voice started talking in my ear.

"Doctor! You need to get here quick!" I used my telepathy to mentally trace the voice down, which belonged to one of the Chameleon Triplets. They were siblings who had the extraordinary ability to disguise themselves as any object they can think of. This is why I call them the Chameleon Triplets. It's easy to remember their names because they all start with J's.

Another voice spoke, which sounded higher and more nasally than the previous one. I knew that was the girl, named Jenny. Jared and Jake were talking among themselves. "We've spotted some rebels running through the forest. Should we kill them?"

"No, don't kill them. Wait until I get there," I told her sternly. Before Jenny shut off her earpiece, I heard all three of the triplets curse in frustration. The Chameleon Triplets were a very violent bunch. They hated when I didn't give them permission to murder.

I used my powers, again, to transport myself to where the triplets were. They already had knives and machetes out, ready to slaughter. It was creepy that they were also disguised as trees, and had deadly weapons attached to their branches. I really wanted to capture the rebels first to see if they would confess where their hideout was. It wouldn't take long for them to spill it all, since I had some of the world's best and evilest interrogators.

Suddenly, I heard ruffling leaves and stomping footsteps, running towards us. As soon as I saw two figures, I froze them in place. The Chameleon Triplets chuckled sinister laughs, excited that they might get a chance to kill. I thought I'd let them kill the rebels, just for fun, but my mind immediately canceled that plan when I saw the faces of those rebels. I've seen them before. I knew exactly who they were. I'm the one who created them and turned them into mutants.

Hazel Roberts and Leo Esteban.

Leo-

I knew we shouldn't have come here. I should have tried harder to convince Hazel that this was a bad idea. But no, I just went along with one of her plans like I always did. First, she almost gets shot to death, and now we're in this situation. We're literally frozen in place, having an old dude stare at us like we're Beyonce' and three creepy triplets laughing at us. This wasn't good.

"Hazel," I managed to say, sounding like I had peanut butter stuck in my mouth. My jaw was frozen in place. Hazel had an advantage, since she could talk to me through her mind.

"Look, you're right. I'm sorry I got us stuck in this situation. If it weren't for me, we'd be safe in the colony," Hazel telepathically told me, her voice filled with guilt. It was rare that Hazel ever apologized for one of her stupid ideas getting us into trouble. She would get mad at herself and ignore me for awhile, too ashamed to talk to me, but she never apologized. Well, I knew the situation was different because we were close to dying.

I didn't notice the middle aged man in front of us had his hand up, and when he put it down, Hazel and I were released from his hold. He was a mutant too. Then he smiled at us the way that someone does when they know you well enough. I gulped, trying to remember if I knew this guy or not. My memory was still partially messed up.

"Hello, fellow mutants. You may not know me, but you soon will get to know me very well. I am Dr. Charles Evansby, a mutant like you two. And I am quite aware of what you two are, Hazel and Leo," the man said to us. I had a bad feeling about Dr. Evansby, and I knew he wasn't someone to trust. I just didn't know what his powers were capable of doing to us if Hazel and I tried to fight back.

"How do you know us?" I asked, trying not to let my voice become shaky. It wasn't working very well. My eyes glanced at Hazel, who stood dead still in fear. Her eyes were turning violet, which wasn't a good sign.

It seemed Dr. Evansby took notice of her eyes too, because he took a step back. "Don't worry, I don't bite. I mean no harm to you, if you do what I say." His tone in his voice wasn't convincing. Hazel's eyes were fixated on the strange man, like she was a lion watching her prey's every move. I wondered what she was doing.

"I know what you are too," Hazel said suddenly. Her voice was low and dark, which concerned me. "You're not here to play nice. You're here to kill."

Dr. Evansby looked shocked, but in a sarcastic sort of way. I figured out that Hazel was reading his mind, and what she discovered weren't good things. Her blazing, angry violet eyes said so. Then, Dr. Evansby pulled a gun out of his belt, using his mind to hold it up in the air. I watched his every move, ready to shove Hazel out of the way if he tried to shoot her. He only fiddled with the trigger, clicking it back and forth.

"You know, Hazel, I'm also a telepath. And I don't appreciate some of the things your saying to me telepathically." Dr. Evansby smirked, still fiddling with the gun. "I was prepared to offer you two a deal, but clearly you two aren't cooperative. I think you can think of what happens to those who don't cooperate with me."

"We're not accepting any kind of deal with you," I snapped, getting impatient with him. I wanted to punch the sly smirk off of his face, as he was clearly enjoying taunting us.

"You'll regret that, later." After he says this, I was already running up to him to punch him. Before I reached him, I was thrown back by an invisible force into a nearby tree. My breath was knocked out of me, and a sharp pain went through my lower back. I was surprised the impact didn't kill me.

Hazel was MAD now, and started running up to the psychotic man. There was no telling what she was capable of doing to him. Dr. Evansby was about the use his force to throw her into air, but she blocked it with a force field. I was surprised at strong she was when she became angry. Her eyes were literally glowing, fiery irises, and she was in rage. I almost found it attractive. Wait, did I just say that?

Finally, Hazel managed to use an invisible force to grab his neck, and held Dr. Evansby in the air. Was she going to choke him to death? I honestly didn't know what she was going to do next. The Chameleon Triplets had fled into the woods, terrified of Hazel's wrath. I would be too if I were them.

"Hazel, put him down!" Dr. Baker's shouted, emerging from the woods. She looked terrified and shocked. Great, I can already see me and Hazel getting a LONG lecture from her when we got back to the colony.

Hazel's eyes immediately turned back to normal, and she dropped Dr. Evansby. Her body collapsed to the ground, and she gripped her head like it was in excruciating pain. Dr. Evansby fell down to the ground too, gasping for air. You could she hand prints from invisible hands choking him. I got up, trying my best to ignore the searing pain in my back, and ran over to her. She was in pain from using too much of her powers.

"Hazel, you alright?" I asked, trying to help her up to her feet. I felt like I pulled something in my back. Hazel only nodded, trying to act like what just happened never happened.

Dr. Baker walked over to us, staring at us sternly. I tried giving her an innocent smile, but that didn't work. She knew what we did, and we were in big trouble. I just hoped that Hazel's idea to come up here wouldn't get us kicked out of the colony. That would be the worst thing right now.

"What were you two thinking?" Dr. Baker asked, her voice surprisingly calm. Her eyes watched Dr. Evansby, who was now leaning on a tree, watching us.

"It was my idea," I told her. Hazel stared at me, not even protesting. I didn't want her to take the blame this time. Usually I wouldn't do this, but this time I felt the need to.

"I don't care who thought of it, I'm just glad you aren't dead. This was really dangerous, and you didn't have any training. You got lucky." She really did look worried, her wrinkled forehead showing concern for us. Then she turned and faced Dr. Evansby, who was smirking at her. She said to him, "And as for you, what the heck are you doing in this forest? It isn't your territory and you know it."

Dr. Evansby muttered something into his earpiece in his ear, and he laughed and said, "It's good to see you too, Sharon."

"I'm not joking. What are you doing here?" she repeated.

"I'm here to stop your little colony going on underground. Why can't you understand that us mutants need to stick together? We can fix this society if you all just join me," Dr. Evansby pleaded, still expressing that crooked smile he always made.

Dr. Baker tried to keep her voice calm. I didn't know how she could stay so patient with a man like him. "All you want is power. And violence. Charles, it's wrong to kill other people just because they don't want to do what you want. That's what you've been doing ever since the outbreak started."

From what I've been hearing, Dr. Evansby is basically a control freak who wants power. All he wants if for people to listen to him and obey his rules. The man was like a dictator. I was eager to learn more about Dr. Evansby. Maybe I should just wait until the time is right, and when Dr. Baker eventually decides to tell us.

Suddenly, a helicopter approached the forest above us, and a ladder fell down to the ground. The wind of the helicopter caused my long, bushy hair to get in my face, blocking my view. Dr. Evansby grabbed the ladder. The last thing he said before the ladder rose and brought him to the helicopter was, "One day, you rebels will listen to me. And you will understand that we are all the same. We mutants need to stay together!"

The helicopter flew away, leaving me, Hazel, and Dr. Baker in silence. Some mutants in the purple jumpsuits ran over to us, seeing if their leader was okay. They all stared at me and Hazel, knowing that we weren't sopposed to be here. Yeah, we were in trouble. Big time.

"Alright, everyone report back to the colony and meet at City Hall," Dr. Baker ordered, putting more empasis on "everyone." I sighed, pulling Hazel's arm to follow me so we could face a long lecture ahead of us.
