Chapter 2: The Abilities

Leo

Pain is all I feel. I literally have fifty needles in me trying to sedate me. The doctors haven't left me alone since I woke up from my coma about four months ago. Ever since then, the government has locked me up in this cell/hospital room. They claim something is wrong with me. They're right; and now my whole life is upside-down.

I've developed special abilities. I know that sounds crazy, but it's true. My strength is almost uncontrollable. I can lift well over a ton, which scares me to death. I know this because some government agents placed me in a room and dropped a car on me. I caught it flawlessly and didn't even struggle with it. Then I did the same thing with an 18-wheeler and a wrecking ball.

So now I'm strapped to a hospital bed, with almost fifty needles pumping so much fluid in me that it would've killed a normal human being. They were trying to knock me out. Nothing is working. I'm too strong for the medicine. I feel like I'm the Hulk and doctors are trying to sedate my uncontrollable, giant green body. I'm trying my best not to jump up and kill everyone. It's not working very well.

The restraints snapped open and I jumped off the bed. My speed and strength was no match for those doctors and government agents. It's like I turned into a ninja when I came out of my coma. Well, now it's time to use my ninja skills to get myself out of this freakish hospital. I made a run for it.

I know the situation is crazy and scary, but I was having the time of my life running through those long hospital hallways. I felt like a runaway convict escaping prison. My laughs and shouts filled the halls, with me thinking about how crazy and immature I was. Hazel was right. I really am crazy and retarded sometimes.

Oh my god...Hazel! How could I forget about her? I'm so dumb! I mean, I know I just woke up from a coma a few months ago and lost a large portion of my memory. But I could never forget Hazel. She could be dead right now, or even worse, being tortured like I was. I wonder if the same weird things have happened to her like me. I need to find her fast.

The huge mob that was once right behind me had fallen behind even further. It seems my speed has improved tremendously, as well as my strength. What did those doctors do to me? Did they cause me to be this way, or did something else cause it?

I was too busy looking behind me that I ran right smack into a small body. My incredible strength and momentum I had caused a much powerful impact on our colliding bodies. The body collapsed to the floor with a huge thump. I then discovered the body was a girl, since she was so frail and her long, black hair was all in her face. I knew I had to help her up, and it would be wrong to run off just because I had a mob chasing me. After all, judging by her hospital gown, she's a patient.

"I'm so sorry! Are you alright?" I grabbed her arm and lifted her up to her feet. Then I finally recognized her.

Hazel looked like she had been run over a thousand times by a truck. Her black hair was frizzy and all over the place, plus it was longer than the last time I saw her. Her face wasn't radiant anymore, and was dull and dead-colored. She looked like she hadn't slept in weeks. Hazel looked like a completely different person.

What made me recognize her so clearly was her perfect hazel eyes. They never changed.

"Leo!" Hazel sighed in relief and wrapped her arms around me. Her hug was weak, but you could tell she was longing to see me. In fact, Hazel never hugged people. She wasn't the type of girl to express her love in a mushy kind of way. It was an extremely weird feeling, but it felt right. I felt bad for her. Especially since she's gone through so much and has been asleep so long.

"Hazel, thank God you're okay," I said and smiled at her. She smiled back at me and laughed to herself. When she smiled, I knew she was the same Hazel. "So what happened to you? Have you been in a coma like me? Do you have crazy powers?"

Hazel blinked, confused. "What? No, no powers. But apparently I've been in a coma for a year. I just woke up today."

I stared at her in awe. Before I could respond to her, I heard yelling coming from all around us. Suddenly, dozens of doctors, cops, SWAT team members, government-looking people, and other important figures with armed weapons surrounded us, pointing guns at us. Hazel stood closer to me, then looked at me with fearful eyes. I was just as scared (if not, more scared) as she was. I couldn't do anything to escape, or we'd get shot. So, I just put my hands up, not knowing what else to do.

"Thank you for cooperating," said a tall black guy, who was wearing sunglasses and a dark blazer. He had his pistol in a perfect shooting position, aimed right at me. "Now I'm going to ask you two to come with us. It's for your own good."

The man snapped his fingers and some men around us came over and grabbed us, holding us in place. I struggled to get free, and I was actually stronger than all of the men. I managed to get out of their grasps, but all that caused was pure chaos.

"He's using his ability! KILL THEM!" The black man commanded everyone.

Every person armed with a gun started shooting at us. I expected to die in an instant, but I felt no bullets hit my body. That's when I saw Hazel using her ability.

I turned to see Hazel holding up her hands, and a glowing, yet transparent, force field was in front of the two of us. The bullets bounced off the mysterious wall like it was made of steel. Hazel looked at herself like she had made fire shoot out of her hands. This meant she had powers like I did. And another amazing thing was that Hazel's hazel eyes were no longer hazel. Her irises were purple.

The men ran out of bullets, so Hazel put her hands down. The force field immediately disappeared. Everyone stared at her like she was a monster. I, on the other hand, was literally jaw-dropped. A female doctor nearby seemed amazed too, because she walked over to us, completely ignoring the guards.

"Miss, I'm going to ask you once to step back," said a new man that wasn't there before. He pointed a large machine gun to her back. The woman didn't seem to care. I held my breath.

"Leave these children alone!" she spoke out, her voice booming throughout the hospital hallway. She turned around to face the guards, her body blocking me and Hazel. The two of us looked at each other, knowing that this was not going to turn out well.

Hazel~

"Ma'am, I won't give you another warning. Step away from the mutts," the man said "mutts" like it tasted like gross cough medicine. I could feel myself turn red of anger. Who do they think we are? Monsters?

"Um, excuse me? Mutts? How dare you people treat these people like garbage! Because of you, our world is ruined because of your rules! What is the point-" Before Dr. Baker could finish her sentence, the man fired his gun and shot her square in the forehead. She collapsed to the ground like a rag doll. I stared in horror as blood started to pool around the doctor. Tears filled my eyes, but I wiped them away when I sudden wave of pure rage hit me. Leo had to step back.

I didn't know what I was doing when I put my hands up again. This time, instead of creating a force field, an even powerful force of energy ran though my veins, and exited out of my palms. This was no physical ability, but mental. I was controlling the force with my mind. The anger was no help in me guiding the force in the right direction. It was scary as it happened.

It was as if an invisible hand grabbed a soldier by the arm, and broke it with a sickening snap. I had just broke a man's arm, nearly in half. My mind wouldn't let me stop, and mentally I sent out an invisible tidal wave that hit each person who stood in front of me and Leo. The force was so strong, it knocked people against the wall, crushing their skulls, or even just flat out killing them from the impact. Even the walls tore apart, and ceiling and floor tiles crumbled to the ground. The hallway looked like it could collapse down to the next floor down.

I looked at Leo, knowing I had to get him off this unstable floor. He looked terrified at my appearance. I'm even scared of myself. Before I even had a choice to change my mind, my powers immediately sent Leo flying down the hall and out the window. I gasped when I realized we were on the 5th floor. No!

I ran all the way down the hall, careful not to fall through the floor. A ceiling tile fell on my back, which slowed me down. I winced, but still ran to the window. I literally shattered the window mentally so I could look out of it. I was expecting to see Leo flattened on the concrete below me. He wasn't there.

"Leo!" I called out. Tears filled my eyes as I thought of his death. Then I heard that sweet and annoying voice.

"Hazel, I'm okay! I'm down here!" Leo yelled to me. I looked down and saw him hanging on the the ledge on the next floor down. He caught himself when he fell out the window. Leo added, "Hey, I hope you're still not angry! Please don't tear me apart!"

I rolled my eyes and laughed, relieved he was okay. I slowly climbed down the fire escape ladder to where he was. I stepped off the ladder and carefully balanced myself on the ledge. Heights were never my thing, so I tried my best to not look down. It wasn't working.

"How are we going to get down? The ladder doesn't go all the way down." Leo asked me, adjusting his tight grip on the window ledge. I didn't think about that.

"We're gonna have to jump. And fast because the floor above us could collapse any second." I looked down and saw a large fountain below us. It was a long shot, but I had no other idea. I reached down and grabbed Leo's wrist.

"Hazel, are you crazy?! We can't ju-" Before he could finish, I jumped off the ledge, pulling Leo with me. We fell a few feet until we landed safely in the fountain, which was surprisingly deep. The water was so cold, there were chunks of ice in it. I gasped, jumping out of the fountain into the cool air. Leo popped his head out of the water, gasping at the coldness of the water also. He too jumped immediately out of the fountain, glaring at me This wasn't very wise.

"Yeah, I didn't think this through," I muttered. Leo stared at me, then smirked and busted out laughing. His obnoxious laugh caused me to bust out laughing too. We looked like a bunch of shivering idiots. But we were happy we could tease each other like the old days. After a while, we stood in silence, embracing the moment, coldness, and relief together.

Leo and I realized something. Maybe having super powers wasn't so bad and scary. They could be the best thing that ever happened to us. But we knew we had a long road ahead of us. The world is different now than it was a year ago.
