Chapter Three
Early the next morning at half six everyone was up. It was Quinn's first day of school and she was already trembling, even though she was half asleep. She was sat on the side of her bed rubbing her eyes. She looked at the clock on the bedsides table. Quinn yawned and then stood up. She walked over to her window and opened the curtains. The sun was blinding compared to how a minute ago the room was dark. She walked over to her wardrobe and opened the doors. She picked up the uniform and then began to put it on. It was a navy blue tartan skirt with a white blouse. She had a navy blue blazer that matched the skirt, but the blazer was plain with the schools crest on it. She had a navy blue crossover styled tie, shiny black shoes and long grey knee high socks. She put it all on except the blazer which she carried out and downstairs with.
In the kitchen her father was sat at the table drinking his regular cup of coffee and reading a newspaper. Fraser was fiddling about in the cupboards and David was sat by the island on one of the stools. He was eating his breakfast. "Morning." Quinn said happily as she entered the kitchen. The boys looked up to see her walk in smiling as if yesterday never happened. "Morning sweetie." Their father greeted. She got no response from the boys. Quinn just ignored it and continued with her day. Fraser and David were in their uniforms which was a navy blue tie, white shirt, black trousers and the same blazer as Quinn. Both boys and girls brought their shoes out of school, but they had to be black and approved.
"Dad!?" Noah said coming down the stairs and into the kitchen. "have you seen my tie?" He continued looking around. George sighed and looked over at noah. "it's in the utility room on the side." George informed him and noah went through the door in the kitchen to get his tie and he then walked back in tying it around his neck.
Quinn walked over to the side and made herself a bowl of cereal. she poured herself a glass of orange juice and went and sat next to David at the island. "now I want at least one of you to walk with you're sister as she doesn't know the way." David stood up and announced "I'm leaving now though." Quinn could feel the tension. David walked out of the kitchen and looked to see their fathers reaction, but he didn't really mind because he had other intentions. Quinn didn't want to course any trouble, but she couldn't say no because if she did she would get lost. "fraser can you?" He asked. "maybe it will help you too to get along...." he added the last bit in a mumble. it was obvious about the tension between all of them especially between fraser and Quinn. Fraser knew he couldn't object or his father would get mad or something and David had just left so he soon responded "okay yes, but we need to get going soon." Quinn nodded in agreement.
She quickly ate the rest of her cereal and drank her juice. Fraser stood up and made his way to the hallway putting his blazer on. he waited tapping his foot. Quinn stood up and grabbed her bag and said "bye." to everyone and then left with fraser.
The two of them walked down the porch steps and down the driveway. the walked out of the small kind of road that was more like a shared drive and then houses with their own driveways. it was very private. Quinn and him kept walking in silence until she finally broke the ice. "so..." she said. "uh... what's the school like?" She questioned. he glanced at her and then looked back at the road ahead. "uh.... really it's like any other school I guess, but I haven't been to another." he informed her."are you nervous?" He continued. she hesitated. was this a act on concern? Was he looking out for her? Or was he just going to make fun or her? Quinn thought. she decided just to tell him. so she nodded. "I know....its stupid... but-" she was interrupted by Fraser. "No it's not. secondary school is like getting sick it's horrible. I wouldn't be doing this if I was you." Quinn raised her eye brows. was that a kind response? Was the tension finally broken? Or just another conversation that didn't end so well? "Really?.. That means a lot."
For the next few minutes it was silent between the two of them. they just continued walking saying nothing until Fraser said "thanks for yesterday. you know not being a snitch and ratting me out. about that how is you're arm?" He looked kind of ashamed by it. Quinn looked at him. she did a half smile and responded "don't worry... I wouldn't. And it's alright, it just hurts a bit."
"I'm sorry.. I didn't mean to hurt you." she smiled. he kind of smiled back a bit. he still didn't like her and she could tell that, but at least he didn't mean to hurt her.... at least that's what he said.
Eventually when they arrived at school he took her to the main office and then left her to face the terror alone. She stood in the office waiting for one of the office workers to notice her. "Yes?" One of them finally greeted her. She smiled at there response.
"Uh.. I'm new here. My name is Quinn Rivers." She told the women at the front desk.
"Ah yes Quinn. Give me a second and I'll get you a locker key and time table." Quinn waited a second and then the women went away and came back. "Here you go Quinn." She said handing Quinn a piece of paper with the key. "Class will start in five minutes. Will you be alright?" The lady asked nicely. Quinn nodded and smiled.
" yes I will be fine Thankyou."
Quinn left the office and walked down the main corridor of the school. She had already missed registration, but the lady at reception would of marked her in. Quinn went to go and find her locker which was no 23. She put one of her books in her the locker. Her school books had been posted to her house before. She took the books for her next class out of her bag and closed her locker. She put her bag back on and closed the locker. As she was looking down at her timetable that was resting on her books she bumped into someone. She dropped all of her books. "I'm sorry..." She said her voice trailing off as she bent down to pick up her books. The person she bumped into bent down to help her. "Don't worry it was my fault." She looked up to see a boy with the most amazing hazel eyes she had ever seen. She smiled. "I'm sorry I just wasn't looking where I was going." She confessed. He smiled. He picked up one or two of her books.
"Here let me help you." He said handing them to her. She smiled back and they both stood up. "Thanks, I'm new here and I was just trying to find my class." She stated.
"Quinn rivers?" She looked surprised. "What class are you in?"
"16. How did you know my name?" She questioned. He smirked.
"It says on the front of your book. Let me show you to class." He said sweetly.
"Oh I'm so stupid sometimes, Thank you that would be nice."
The two of them walked down the corridor and turned right. At the end of that corridor there was class 16. They stopped outside. "Well thanks for helping me."he smiled.
"It was a pleasure. Oh and you might want to have this back." He replied giving her one of her books back. "Thanks." She said smiling back.
"I'll see you around then." He told her and she nodded and headed into her class.
When entered the class room she told the teacher that she was new and he directed her to a seat. She sat next to a blonde haired girl with wavy hair. She said that her name was Lottie. She smiled sweetly at her and then class begun. It was english with a teacher who was old, but interesting. He had grey hair and his name was Mr Atwood
Finally when first lesson ended Quinn walked with Lottie to her next class. "So why did you move here?" She asked Quinn. Quinn looked down a bit sad now realising that, that was the question that everyone will be asking her. "My mother died..." Lottie's expression changed completely "oh my gosh! I'm so sorry that must be terrible. Why are you living here now?" She said apologetically.
"When my parents got a divorce my mum left and took me with her. My dad however stayed here with my brothers."
"Oh....at least you still have some family. Who are you're brothers? Do they go here?" She continued to question.
"I guess. Uh David, Noah and Fraser. There in the years above... Not sure which years though." She stopped. "What?" Quinn questioned to why her new friend had stopped what she was doing and look like she had just worked something out. "You're last name is rivers....yes Quinn rivers. Oh you're the sister of David, Noah and Fraser rivers?" She questioned. Quinn nodded.
"Unfortunately."
"You know like Noah is like the school athlete. He is amazing at anything to do with sport and the other two aren't that bad either, but there all well you know and don't mind me saying not bad looking."
Quinn's expression changed completely. Fraser? David? Noah? Hot? Good looking? No!!!! No. No. No!!! That doesn't mix, they are not fit in anyway she thought. All they are, are idiots that give you bruises on arms and smash up you're things when you're supposed to be asleep.
That was when David was walking at the other end of the hallway. Walking towards them. Quinn wasn't paying attention and Lottie nudged her. "That David rivers. That David river that's you're brother?" She said as Quinn looked up to see who was walking towards them. "Yep." She stated popping the p. David walked passed, but brushed her shoulder hard as walked past. He basically pushed her back, but she didn't fall. She was just further back than where she started. "Ass whole." She muttered. He looked back at her and gritted his teeth. "Bitch..." He muttered walking on.
"Woah calm down! Don't call him an ass whole he's more than a year older than us he could beat your ass!" Lottie warned.
"They literally already did. I'm not scared of them. There more scared of dad." Lottie's eyes widened. "He hit you?" She questioned a bit scared. Quinn shook her head.
"No, but he might or one of them might as well of done. He just stood there and did nothing when Fraser grabbed my arm and bruised it." She informed her. Lottie's eyes widened. "He hurt you physically?... What about you're dad. Didn't you tell him?"
"No...I'm not a snitch. It's what brothers do to their little sisters or whatever I don't care. It was Fraser anyway, but he wouldn't do it again. Fraser felt so bad afterwards. It was in the middle of an heated argument and he was pissed and I was pissed. We were angry. I was about to storm off, but he wouldn't let me go. His grip got harder the more I struggled."
"Oh okay...nothing serious then. Come on let's get to class." Lottie said and they headed to their next class which was maths.
When the next two lessons ended Quinn went and sat with Lottie for lunch and three other girls joined them that she had met in other classes. their names were Hollie, Taylor and Serena. The seemed nice enough. Lottie was most definitely loud and didn't mind making fun of herself. she was goofy, but everybody loved her for it. Hollie was more quiet, but he seemed sweet. Taylor was loud and fearless. she was strong minded and she wouldn't back down in a fight. serena was beautiful. just like all the others. she was sharp and was one of those people who knew what they wanted and wouldn't stop until they got it.
"So quinn.. where you from?" Serena Asked her.
"I'm from weston, but I was born here." she responded.
"Where the hell is that?" Taylor and Lottie said at the same time which made them laugh. "I would be surprised if you heard of it. it's a town on a small island. the islands not on any map. Let alone the towns and villages." that's why she had to get on a plane instead of just getting a taxi the whole way to England it's self. "what brought you to hazelwood. it may be in the south of England so it's warmer than some random small town in the north, but it's nothing special. no ones ever heard of it either." Serena told her.
"Well I heard of it. my dad and brothers live here, but when my mum got devorst we moved away. then my mum died.... well the dad I hadn't met got in touch and I had to come back and live with him." she told them her life story. "what is you're dad a dick or something?"
"Taylor!" Hollie said shocked Taylor would say that. Taylor gave her a look. "what?" Hollie didn't respond. "no it's just a big move and I don't know him or my brothers." Quinn continued.
The bell went for the end of lunch and the girls got up and took their separate ways. Although Quinn and Serena headed to languages. Serena showed her along because they were both in the same class and they entered room 9. Quinn told the teacher once again that she was new and the teacher informed her she can sit where she likes, so as there was a spare seat next to Serena called her over and she sat down next to her.
In Frasers class he was sat on the second row next to a
Girl with Gorgeous strawberry blonde hair. she had the most amazing blue eyes. could see right through the sparkles in them. he was in English with me Attwood. "ah Fraser! Was it you're sister he joined today? Quinn rivers?" He asked Fraser as he came to give back his paper when he was handing them back. Fraser nodded. "yes, in year eight?" He answered. Mr Attwood nodded. Fraser did a half smile like he approved in what he said. "she's a bright spark! Very good... that's just from one lesson with her. pity you haven't taken a leaf out of her book." he told him putting the paper in front of him. Fraser let out a sigh seeing a D as his grade. "not you're best work my friend..." Mr Attwood said and walked over to the next person after handing the strawberry blonde haired girls graded B paper and said to her "it's good, you're almost there Alison." she smiled and read his comments.
Fraser looked down at his paper he scrunched his nose and then shrugged. Alison turned to him once she had finished reading. "did you do that bad then?" She asked him. he shrugged. "I got a D." he told her.
"Oh. don't worry about it, I'm sure you will do better next time." he smiled at her sweetly. "thanks." he said.
"I didn't know you had a sister. How come she just moved to our school? Why didn't you all go to the same one?" She asked. Fraser sighed. "she was in the past and just came back to the present." he said. she laughed at the dramatic way he made it. "you're turning into Mr Attwood. go on carry on."
"Well most people know my parents got a divorce when I was younger and my mother moved away. well I also had a little sister and our mum took her with her. although recently my mum died and Quinn came to live with us... even though we've had nothing to do with her ever since." Alison's eyes widened.
"gosh! I'm so sorry about you're mum. it must be nice to have you're sister back though." Fraser shrugged.
"I didn't even know my mum, so like I care, but Quinn yes it's nice to have her back....though it's complicated. in some ways I wish she stayed on another island faraway." did Fraser just say something nice about Quinn? He may have made an horrible comment afterwards, but still for Fraser that's a lot.
When the long school day came to an end, Quinn started walking about of school with Lottie. she hadn't seen her brothers yet, but she had some idea of the way. "Where about are you walking to?" Lottie asked Quinn. "Uh I think it's Weverly Way?" She told her. Lottie raised her eye brows.
"Ah yes you're last names rivers. I live only a house down from you." she said smiling, Quinn smiled back at her. "ah really! Well you could only live a house down because there's like only three or four houses." she responded. the girls laughed and walked home together.
They walked down the roads. Quinn didn't have to worry of getting lost after not organising where to meet Fraser after school this morning. Lottie knew exactly where she was going. when they did get to Weverly way they stopped outsides lotties house as Quinn's was at the end. "this is you're house? It's beautiful." Quinn told her. Lottie smiled. "not as nice as you're house."
"Anyway sometime we should hang out, but I have to go now. I will see you later." Lottie hugged Quinn and headed towards her house. "bye!" Quinn shouted after her.
"Quinn!" She heard a voice shout after her. she turned to see noah coming towards her. "Hey." she greeted him as he came to join her. "hey." Once he walked over to her he gave her a kind of smile and looked at the house she's was standing by. "the Griffin's?" He question.
"Yeah I walked home with my friend Lottie who lives here." she informed him.
"Oh... I know her sister." she smiled. "okay you two don't have any history do you?" Quinn wondered. He shook his head. "no just friends."
"Okay...." she responded.
"How was you're first day?" He questioned as they started walking towards the house. "good. I liked english. the teacher was entertaining." noah smirked.
"Mr Attwood? I'm guessing." she nodded.
They approached the house and walked up the drive. when the came to the porch noah opened the door and they both walked in. Noah went through to the kitchen and Quinn went through to the lounge. Quinn sat down on one of the sofas and took out a book from her school bag to get on with her homework. she turned open the book and took a pen out of her bag. She began to write.
In the kitchen noah went to the fridge to get a snack and he sat down at the island drinking the coke he just got. Fraser walked into the kitchen and went over to noah. "I don't suppose you've seen Quinn? Dads gonna kill me." he asked.
"What do you mean? She walked down our road with me as I saw her on the way." Fraser gritted his teeth.
"Ugh! For god sake she was meant to meet me! Where is she?" He frustratingly said.
"Lounge." and Fraser left heading to the lounge.
Half way down the page was where she had gotten to on her english homework when Fraser walked in. "where were you?!" He accused. Quinn didn't look up and look him in the eye she just carried on writing. "what now? What do you mean?" She continued writing. Fraser gritted his teeth and ripped her English book out of her hand and dropped it on the floor. "hey!" She shouted at him.
"you were meant to meet me after school. are you trying to cause trouble between me and dad?!" He snapped. She gave him a look.
"No why would I do that? I walked home with a friend. you need said to meet so I assumed you were leaving me to work it out myself."
"You could have at least told me!" He continued to argue.
"Look I'm too tired for this now! I'm just trying to on with my English homework." Fraser rolled his eyes. "oh yeah little miss amazing at english. I can't let you delay!" He snapped in a sarcastic tone. "what's that supposed to mean?"
He shook his head. "nothing! I leave you in peace with the damn English language." She rolled her eyes when he stormed out of the room.
Quinn stood up and picked Up her English book. she collected her school stuff and left the room heading towards her bedroom. when she got there she sat at the desk and continued to work.
Fraser was in his room which was also next to hers on the left and Noah's was on the right. Their fathers was opposite Quinn's room and David's was on the right from Noah's. The upstairs hallway was long and it had wooden flooring and white walls.
Later on at dinner when there father came home Fraser was sat next to David and David was opposite Quinn who was next to noah. it was silent. the only sound that existed was the sound of their knifes and forks bashing against the plates. David's and Quinn's eyes kept meeting, but they quickly moved onto something else. Quinn didn't even dare to look in Frasers direction and noah was just silent.
Eventually their father noticed and made conversation. "how was you're fist day Quinn?" He asked her. Quinn looked over at him and smiled at just the fact that someone was actually communicating with her without yelling. "It was good. I walked home with Lottie who only lives next door." she just put Fraser right In it. Fraser glared at her, that kind of look if looks could kill. "didn't you walk home with Fraser? Fraser I thought I told you to help her out!" He snapped at his son. Quinn looked down regretting what she just said. "dad I-" he was going to continue, but Quinn cut him off. "no dad. I told Fraser that I would be walking home with someone else after school." their father nodded understanding. it went back to silence as they ate. George began to notice. "what's with all of you? Have you had another argument. Quinn did they upset you." Quinn could of told him about David, but she left it. "no, it's probably because it's Monday and Monday's the most tiring day."
When dinner had finished David started taking the plates over to the sink and Quinn was told to help him. they were only sat at the kitchen table today so it wasn't walking a few metres from the kitchen to the dining room. Quinn bring the stuff through whilst David loaded the dish washer. the rest of the family left the kitchen and went to go and do their own things. "why did you?" Quinn paused. "why did you bash into me or should I say push into me?" She asked him. he only so much as took one look at her and then continued in what he was doing. Quinn sighed. "for God sake! Just answer me!" She let out a deep breath before continuing. "I'm right here. I live in the same house as you! You can just ignore me forever!" She snapped. he didn't say anything just continued to do what she was doing. Quinn walked over to the side and loudly put down the last plate on the side that she was carrying. "you're such an idiot!" she said and stormed off just as noah walked into the room blocking her way out. "woah Quinn? What's up?" he questioned her. she gritted her teeth. "ask him!" And she pushed past him and stormed upstairs.
As she entered her room she slammed the door and went over to her bed. she sat up and leaned over to get something from her bedside table. she picked up a book from inside the draw and closed it. She opened the first page, that was a picture of her and her mum when Quinn was a baby. this was one of the other things she had left, but it had only ten photos at the most. Quinn turned it over to the next page. she had never seen this photo album before. it was a shock to find a picture of her mother and father hugging and the three boys stood inform of them. It went in the order that they were stood Fraser, David and noah. Quinn was standing just infront of David and he had his arms wrapped around her. she must of been only two or three. She smiled and how happy they seemed. Fraser was probably three or four. noah was probably four or five and David was probably five or six. a tear slipped down her cheek.
Suddenly someone burst into her room and walked over to her. it was noah. he looked down on the photo album, but Quinn basically ignored him. noah ended up sitting right next to her and took another look at the photo. "can I help you?" She asked him rudely. she was hurting and noah could see that especially because he could see her tears. he looked at her once
Again and back at the photo. "you know I remember that day." He told her. Quinn looked up at him. "you do?" He nodded in response. "it was a great day at the beach. probably the best time I've ever had."
"I always thought mum took me away when I was one, but here I look about three." she said. he smiled. "you were almost three. mum took you when you were three, but don't ask me the date. I wouldn't know. I was only five." Quinn smiled.
"How do you know this I barley remember any of my time being here?"
"I wouldn't of know the ages. dad told me them. we have the same picture somewhere. for that whole day we were laughing. eating ice cream. I buried Fraser and we wouldn't let him out. it was great." Quinn smiled, but then it faded. "but then why did mum leave and take me with her?" Noah shrugged. "people have strange reasons for doing things. we may never find out, so that's something we've got to except. it took me time, but I think I've expected it." Quinn raised her eye brows. "so you're not angry that I'm here?" Noah shook his head. "no because I've expected it. you're be little sister and that's all that matters. you didn't choose to leave and you didn't choose to come back." Quinn let one or two tears slip. "Fraser and David are just angry because they don't understand. they don't know and they know they may never will and that's what's making them angry. there only Blaming you because it's easier and it takes time to get used to having a sister again." Quinn leaned her head on his shoulder. "why does everything have to be so complicated? Why couldn't mum have just stayed here. never of left with me and never died of cancer. life would of been so much easier." she said. noah sighed. "it didn't happen that way though. you may miss her, but you will move on still loving her."
"I guess so ... it's just so hard."
