Chapter 4

SAM'S POV

"Sam, honey, why is there a boy sleeping on our lawn?"

I stared at her in utter shock, trying to control my inner panic. I knew it! That idiot. What the hell was he even thinking? It was utterly clear from my behavior earlier that I wasn't someone who would feel remorse after doing something bad. Why would he even think that I'll apologize? What if I really was some heartless gangster or something? I mean, like- who the hell acted so stubborn towards a person they just met anyway?

What is this guy?

My head felt dizzy as I calculated the consequences of him staying out the whole night. A night spent exposed to the elements in -2 degrees celsius weather probably won't kill him, but he would still start exhibiting some symptoms of mild hypothermia including shivering, blue appendages, diminished mental capacity, poor coordination and slow heart rate. Or if he was incredibly unlucky, tissue freezing and rupturing. Oh god, this was bad.

No matter how much I hated the thought of going out of my comfort zone and ignoring my usual norm of 'Be selfish and don't care', I knew I couldn't let him stay out there the whole night. Maybe I was being over dramatic and making it sound bigger than it actually was but I couldn't help it. It was true that I hurt others with words but I definitely didn't want to be someone who caused physical damage to others.

"Uh...um...he's not- I mean, I'm not- I don't- " I blushed as I became a stuttering mess, trying really hard to hide my flustered and panicked state. What the hell do I do? I couldn't possibly tell her that I talked to him. She was definitely going to assume something. "I-I don't know?" I grimaced when it came out like a question.

She quirked a single eyebrow, her expression changing from confused to amused. "That's not what he said though."

Oh God. Don't fucking tell me he said something weird to my mom. I couldn't put it past that guy. At this point I knew him enough to know that he would do anything to get what he wanted.

"W-what? What did he say?" I asked curiously.

"That he won't go home until you tell him to." She said, tilting her head in confusion as if trying to understand what was really going on here. Sorry, mom, even I didn't understand what was going on here. That fucking idiot came into my life only like- three hours ago and he was already destroying my life. I was still not going to apologize though. Maybe we could make a deal or something.

"That idiot," I sighed, hurrying down the stairs and out the door, leaving my mom to ponder about what just happened.

I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw him sprawled across the lawn with his back on the ground, staring up at the sky with a small smile playing at his lips and goosebumps all over his skin. I could almost feel the bright aura radiating off of him, engulfing the darkness all around. It was kind of pathetic of me, but I wished I had accepted his friendship.

"Get out of my lawn," I said and he frowned, leaning his head back to look at me standing behind him. I simply glared at him, gesturing for him to get up.

"You came," He said, his eyes bright and a shit eating grin on his face as he hurried to get up.

"What the hell do you think you're doing? Are you out of your damn mind?!" I yelled as he walked towards me, dusting his back. "What if I never came?! Do you think I would've cared if you died out here?!"

"But you're here," He said arrogantly.

"What?!" I snapped harshly, too caught up in my own thoughts to hear what he said.

"If you don't care, why are you here?" He smiled satisfactorily. "You wouldn't be here if you really didn't care."

My eyes widened and I stared at him, too stunned to say anything. I never thought he would twist my words around like that. Those words which were meant to be nothing but rude and bitter, he viewed it in a different light. This guy was bad for me. I knew it. I could feel it. He was my complete opposite, he always looked at the bright side whereas I searched for the bad side of things, the brighter side always being too blinding for my eyes.

He was definitely bad for me.

"You're staring," He smirked. "And your mouth is open."

I blinked, snapping my jaw shut and regaining my composure. "Whatever." I rolled my eyes, shoving him back, "Now go away."

"Ouch." He stumbled and then glared, returning to his normal idiotic self in an instant. "That's not very nice."

"I'm not nice." I said.

"Hmm. I won't say that yet," he said contemplatively, "Anyway now just apologize like a good boy and I'll go."

I scoffed. "No. I won't apologize because I didn't do anything wrong."

"Twice."

I frowned. "What?"

"Apologize twice. For calling me a twat and for shoving me."

I gaped at him, opening my mouth and snapping it shut again, repeating the task like a fish out of water. "Wha- "

"Is everything okay out here?" My mom said, her tone beyond amused at this point. Damn, why was this happening to me? Why was she here anyway?

"It's fi- "

"Your son said something very rude to me and he won't even apologize. I won't leave this lawn until he does. If I die here tonight then my decomposing body will still be here and even if that's gone, my ghost will forever follow him around." He said dramatically, looking straight into my eyes rather than at my mom, waving his hands around to elaborate his point. But there was no need clearly, I believed his every word. That would definitely happen if I didn't do something soon.

I slapped my forehead and groaned, glancing at my mum to see her smiling with an amused look on her face. "Go home, please..." I whispered, desperation seeping into my voice.

"Apologize," He smirked. He was clearly enjoying this a little too much.

"No."

"Apologize!"

"I said no."

"Why?"

"No reason."

"Fine then, I guess I'll just stand here all night," He huffed.

I sighed, glancing at my mom still standing by the door trying to act indifferent towards the whole situation. Dammit, this was so fucking embarrassing. Why wasn't she going inside? Was this seriously that amusing? Probably it was for her. It was the very first time in five years that her son was talking to someone voluntarily, I understood kind of. But for god's sake, go inside, woman! "Fine. I'm sorry, okay? I'm sorry!"

His eyes lit up and he smirked, throwing his arms around me dramatically and patting my back. "Good boy, now we're friends."

I froze, unable to move or utter a word, both my hands hanging limply on both sides. I couldn't remember the last time someone had hugged me. There were countless times where I felt in need of a hug, there were nights where I would cry alone in the dark, wishing for someone to hold my hand. It was sad, painful. I had craved for someone's warmth for a long time, I had desired for someone who was willing to be my forever. So even if I was being hugged by a total stranger who could possibly be a patient in the mental hospital, I couldn't bring myself to hate it.. not even a bit. I had forgotten how it felt to be embraced by someone, how it felt to be so close to someone that you could hear the steady rhythm of their heartbeat, the hot breaths on your neck and the warm hands pressed to your back. It was so damn pathetic that I felt like crying.

"Okay, now I have to go. Give me your number, I'll text you." He pulled away, grinning with an expectant look on his face. Oh, god no. Don't tell me he was thinking we were going to be best buddies or something.

"Go home." I sighed, beyond exhausted to yell at him. He tilted his head in confusion, as if he couldn't understand why we weren't best friends yet and braiding each other's hair.

"Give me your number," He said and I rolled my eyes.

"No."

"You're not particularly nice, are you?" He said, narrowing his eyes at me.

"Well, I never said I was," I replied.

He breathed exasperatedly. "It doesn't matter now. You're nice enough for me." He grinned, pinching my cheeks before bouncing away, like literally bouncing away.

I turned and stared after him in a daze. He was so fucking weird. I didn't even know what to call him. Unique? Special? He really was one of a kind. Hell, he could be a completely different species for all I know. Looking at him somehow made me want to kick a dog or something.

What an annoying guy!
