Chapter Five

Aanuoluwa sat on her bed reading a book.

It's been a month since she left the hospital and moved in with her real family. She really enjoyed the past one month with her family.

Her parents bought her new things, fussed over her and made sure she was comfortable. Her mother also stuffed her with food claiming she was too slim.

Her twin sister was also the best. Aanu felt proud to have a twin sister, especially one that loved her so much. Anjola and Aanu's relationship as twins grew closer daily.

Whenever Anjola was home, she was always with Aanu and Aanu really enjoyed her sister's company. Anjola also introduced Aanu to her friends. They were surprised at first, but then they started relating with Aanu and were nice to her.

Aanu really enjoyed staying with her family but the only thing she was uncomfortable with was their devotion to God. It wasn't that she didn't like it, she just didn't like how they involved her in it but she didn't tell them about it.

She hated going to church but she had to go with them and pretend like she was enjoying the service when all she wanted to do was leave. She also didn't like the habit of them gathering together in the morning and night for prayers. She knew they were strong believers but she wasn't.

She didn't believe in God at all. He made promises He only kept for the people He loved and she was sure He didn't love everyone. If he did, why were some people suffering and some enjoying? She didn't what to think about it all.

She had her family now, she could live without Him. She just had to behave like she believed and shared the same faith with them. That wasn't difficult to do.

Aanu heard a knock on her room door and she looked up from the book she was reading.

"Come in" she said. The door opened and Anjola entered the room.

"Aburo" Anjola said in Yoruba language as she entered the room and closed the door. (Translation- Aburo means younger one)

Aanu laughed and said, "Who is the aburo? You took just few minutes from me?" She closed her book and dropped it.

"Those few minutes can't be bought" Anjola said smugly as she laid beside her twin on the bed and they laughed.

"How was your day at work?" Aanu asked.

"It was wonderful" Anjola replied.

"I don't know what you see in teaching. It's stressful and boring" said Aanu.

"Don't have that mindset. Teaching is not boring" Anjola said. "It's actually fun. You get to be around children and teenagers, listen to their ideas, impact knowledge into them, correct their mistakes and discipline them when they misbehave. You also get to watch them grow. It's satisfying"

"Is that why you chose to be a teacher?"

"Yeah. I've always admired teachers. I respected my teachers a lot when I was young. I imagined myself as a teacher back then and I'm glad I am now." Anjola said with a sweet smile on her face. "You know I studied Mathematics in school."

"Right. You told me"

"So when I finished school, went for service and all that, I prayed to God for direction in life. Then in dreams, I saw myself standing in front of students in classroom or standing among students on a school field. Then I knew it. I'm a teacher and I'm enjoying it."
"So you even asked God to decide your job for you?" Aanu asked, raising her brow.

"Yes. If I'm doing something against God's will, I'll never be satisfied in it. I pray to God before I take any important step, because a little mistake can lead to a lot of consequences."

"Hmmm. You pray a lot anyway. I heard you praying last night. This morning, before the morning devotion, I came to your room but you were praying."

"You heard me pray yesterday night?"

"Yeah. Some minutes past 11, I went to the kitchen to get water to drink because I was thirsty. On my way back to my room, I heard you praying."

"Ohh. I thought I was too loud and woke you up."

"I was awake, reading a book"

"Okay. I was actually having time with my Father."

"God?"

"Yes. I set every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday night for my midnight personal fellowship with God. It's sort of my secret place with God. You get?"

"Yeah. I do."

"I do my quiet time every morning before I leave my room so that's what you saw me doing in the room this morning."

"Nice." Aanu said indifferently.

"You know Aanu, I want to ask you something" Anjola said staring at her sister.

"Go on"

"How's your spiritual life? Are you living for God?"

Aanu stiffened but then recovered herself and faced her twin. "Of course. Why do you ask?"

"I've been watching you. Though you hide it well, I know you don't have interest in things of God." Anjola said, looking into Aanu's eyes. "I know you dislike going to church and I know you get bored whenever we're talking about the word of God"

"What do you mean?" Aanu said with a dry laugh.

"You can't hide it from me. I've been watching you. I also know something's bothering you. You can share it with me." Anjola said and she held her sister's hands.

Aanu stared at her twin sister and her heart felt heavy. She couldn't tell her that she was worrying about her past -her past as a prostitute. Though she wanted to forget about it all, she was still scared that she'd meet someone in Akure who knew her in Lagos. The world wasn't that big and anything could happen.

She didn't want anything to jeopardize her newly found life.

She sighed and said, "Anjola, you're right. I don't really believe in God."

She stopped to search Anjola's face for any sign of disbelief or anger but she found none so she continued. "I believe He exists but I don't believe all what people say about Him."

"What don't you believe?" Anjola asked in a gentle tone.

"Do you know God has favourites?"

"What do you mean?"

"He favours some people and neglects others. He claims to love us all but He doesn't. Let's leave the unbelievers now and focus on the believers. Evil things happen to some believers who devote their all to God and He can't protect them? He says no evil shall come near us, no plague shall come near our dwellings but then He allows bad things to befall us. Why is it some believers enjoy all the promises of God while some do not? Isn't it just unfair?"

Anjola smiled and squeezed Aanu's hands gently. "He loves us all. As long as we believe in Him, He'll never fail us. All things work together for good. Sometimes God allows those bad things for a reason. If we trust in Him, He'll help us through those difficult periods and lead us to glory. God loves us all. He doesn't even want the death of sinners. He wants us all to be saved. He takes care of us all, all His creatures including animals so why would He treat His own people, those who believe in Him, why would He treat them poorly?"

"Anjola," Aanu started as she calmly removed her hands from her sister's grip. "You're one of God's favorites. He really takes care of you well so it's only natural you won't understand what I'm saying. You don't know what some people go through."

"God loves you Aanu. It's true that you've suffered and you got fed up of life but when you wanted to give up, He sent us to you."

"He did?" Aanu scoffed. "I'd rather believe it's just coincidental"

"It wasn't."

"You know I told you about Aunty Jemmy" Aanu said.

"Yes"

"Aunty Jemmy served God wholeheartedly. Fine, she sinned against Him but she was deceived. I prayed to God on her behalf but I guess I wasn't important enough for Him to hear me or He didn't care about Aunty Jemmy at all"

"Maybe it was Aunty Jemmy who didn't want God's forgiveness"

"What do you mean?" Aanu said sharply.

"Aunty Jemmy might not have gone to God for forgiveness. God is always ready to forgive us as long as we repent genuinely. You prayed for her but what if she just wasn't ready for God. She might have felt ashamed but I'm sure God called out to her or the Holy Spirit urged her. She had you also to strengthen her but she gave the devil control and ended her life. That's a huge mistake.

When we sin, we should ask God for forgiveness sincerely, we shouldn't hide behind the sin and say God won't forgive us. Aunty Jemmy should have gone to God for help. She allowed the devil to control her mind and deem her as unworthy of God's mercy"

"But He should have stopped her." Aanu snapped. "You said He doesn't want the death of a sinner, why did He allow her to die?"

"As humans, we don't want God to control our lives, so He gave us choices. We pick the way we want to follow. It's left to us to pick our choice. God might have reached out to her, urged her in her spirit and the devil also must have mocked her and called her unworthy. She must have given up on herself"

"That doesn't make any sense"

"Aanu..."

"Anjola, let's forget about this topic. Let's talk about something else."

Anjola sighed and nodded. "Think about it"

"OK" Aanu said and she looked away from her twin.

"I came straight to your room after I came back from work." Anjola said as she stood up from Aanu's bed. "I'm going to take a shower before mum comes back from work and call me a dirty girl. Don't miss me too much. I'll be back in some minutes."

"Anjola" Aanu said, looking up at her sister. "I've registered for that tutorial class you told me about. I'm going to prepare for the external examination."

"Wow. That's wonderful" Anjola said clapping happily. "My lawyer. Don't worry, I'm sure you'll do well in the exam. Just focus on all the subjects in the tutorial class"

"Yeah. I'm resuming next week Monday"

"Good. So you won't always be at home, in your room like an old woman"

"You're the old woman." Aanu said laughing.

"Make good friends also. Don't keep to yourself"

"I'm glad the tutorial is for people like me not for people younger than me. I'm sure I won't feel comfortable attending tutorials with teenagers."

"I know. The external examination is meant for adults who want to go back to the university for a course or to study something else. I'm sure you'll be able to cope since you're a fast learner."

"Yeah right. Fast learner" Aanu said smiling."I left school when I was in SS2, I have a lot of things to catch up on"

"Don't worry. Just focus on the tutorial and your books"

"Alright. Now go to your room and take a shower. I don't want to call you a dirty pig"

"You're the dirty pig's twin sister" Anjola said laughing. "See ya"

"Yeah" Aanu replied and Anjola left the room.

Aanu stared at the spot on her bed where Anjola just left and she sighed. You really can't understand, Anjola. She thought.

Anjola got inside her room and closed the door. She sighed deeply as she placed her bag on a chair. Lord God, help me. She thought. Help me to show Aanu the right way, the truth.
