Neith's Pov
The wind blew past me in a rush as I rode my horse, Zen as fast as I could.
Come on faster, I rushed Zen. It was a cloudy night so the moonlight didn't provide an illuminated path. But I couldn't stop. I had to get to him. I had too for the sake of this war. If he managed to reach the Hittites camp before I got to him then I just sent twenty one men to their immediate deaths and our plans will collapse.
Twenty eight hours ago
"We made it," I said beaming at Baako who as usual remained stone faced, but I didn't care. We made it to the fourth cataract in time and it gave me hope that we might actually be successful in winning this war.
The rest of the day was spent on setting up camp and the troops spent some time training and stretching.
Non of the troops had an idea of the actual plan in case there were spies among the troops. They were told that we would encounter the Hittites army head on.
At nightfall all the Liwaas had gathered up inside my tent for the execution of part one of the plan, the sabotage.
"So we leave for the enemy camp when the moon is high up tonight. We will be able to reach a little after sunset the next day and we can commence the operation using the cover of the darkness. This is the list of recruits we will be taking with us," Darius said as he handed me a list that contained ten names.
All the Liwaas had hand picked a single solider under their command who they thought would be fit for the operation. Apart from these twenty men Baako would tag along just to keep an eye on things in case anything went southwards. Apart from these people no one else knew of the plan.
"Alright, I wish you all good luck. Remember your victory is the key to winning this war. Please keep that in mind and I hope that all of you return back safely," I said looking at them. A few nodded and a few didn't.
More than half the men in the room didn't think I was fit to lead them but no one seemed to mouth it out. Hopefully by the end of all this I could win them over with my charms or perhaps lack of them.
"Remember to go on regular rounds and keep an eye out for anything suspicious," Baako said once everybody left the tent to go get ready.
"Yes, I will be sure to keep an eye out. You take care of yourself too," I said with a small smile. Even though Baako didn't talk very much and we hardly knew each other, I had grown fond of the man and I hoped he and everyone else would be alright.
"Take care and keep out of trouble," Baako said and left to go get ready himself. I think I saw a small smile creep up on that cold face and I smiled. I guess I was growing on him too.
After the small troop had departed I made my way back to my tent. As I looked around my eyes feel on the horses that were kept in the open stables. I turned and headed in their direction so I could pet a few horses.
"Hi, Zen," I said petting my horse. He was a brown and white destrier. He gently nudged me as I stroked his mane.
"Do you think he would make it?" I heard someone whisper. It seemed to be coming from the other side of the stable.
"I hope he does, if our soldiers are successful in the sabotage then Egypt's change of success would increase and that means bad news for us. I hope he warns the Hittites army in time," another voice responded.
I felt all the blood from my body turn to ice as I stood frozen on the spot. This was so.... not happening.
"Alright we better get out of here before someone comes," the initial guy said.
Not so fast I thought as I took a sharp right turn and now I stood right in front of two very young soldiers. They were probably two to three years older than I was.
"May I know what you boys are doing here at this time? It's way past curfew," I asked coldly.
"General, we were um... just checking on the horses sir," the kid who I first heard said avoiding eye contact. He was tall and skinny. In the darkness he looked like a thin twig that could be blown away by a strong wind. The other one was slightly shorter but wasn't as skinny as his friend.
"Well then since you are already up would you mind accompanying me to my tent. I seem to require a hand with something," I said.
Both of the guys looked at each other. I could see they looked terrified. If I was gonna get any sort of answers from these two I need to make sure to get it discretely and not cause a scene.
"Come on guys, I'll treat you to some meat and wine afterwards," I said with a wink.
And that did it. They relaxed considerably. Men!
"Sure," they said and we made our way to my tent that was situated a little further from the other tents for various reasons.
"What do you need our help for?" one of them asked as we entered the tent.
"Oh nothing really. I Just wanted to know why you would betray your country," I said smoothly looking at them with a steady glare. I wasn't angry or disappointed. I just wanted to understand why anyone would want to this.
I saw their faces pale. There smiles dropped and they reached for the tilt of their swords. At least they seemed to posses natural instincts of a soldier.
"You.. you overheard our conversation?" the skinny one asked.
"I did actually. I want to know which one of your friend has headed out to inform the Hittites of our plan and when he left, how he came to know of it and why in all the world would you guys help in bringing Egypt down?" I asked as calmly as I could manage.
They looked horrified. There hands were ready to remove the sword.
"Now we don't want anyone to get hurt. Just tell me what I need to know and I'll make sure you won't be treated very badly in prison," I said in a cool tone. I hoped this wouldn't end up in a sword fight.
Unfortunately they decided to use their swords instead of their common sense. I sighed, why does everything always have to go wrong for me.
Before any of them could wield their weapon I took down the short one first since he was closer with a punch to his ribs and then flipped him to the ground. The skinny one managed to remove his sword by then and it took me a few seconds to send his sword flying into the air. I was sure they would get killed instantly if they were in the front lines. They were absolutely hopeless. I tied them both down and took a seat facing them.
"How did you guys pass the eligibility test? Your sword technique was so bad even my best fri... um.. a girl could have done better and you can't even throw a punch," I said looking at the two idiots in front of me. Anka couldn't even hold a sword and she could have done better. Non of them uttered a word and I was beginning to lose my temper.
"Alright lets start off with names. Can you tell me that at least?" I asked. Again no answer.
I lifted my sword and made a deep cut in the short guy's leg. He cried out in pain.
"Bes, Bes was the one who helped us graduate the army course," he said tears threatening to fall. Are these even men? I can handle more pain than them sheesh.
Bes the name sounded familiar. I wondered where I had heard it from and then it hit me. He was one of the nobel's Ammon had killed. If these guys were linked with him then they were definitely spies.
"You're spies then? Why are you doing this?" I asked in a threatening tone. Anger boiled through me and I couldn't contain it anymore. I was met by silence once again.
"Alright since you are so persistent in not answering my questions why don't we try something else," I said putting my sword away. I couldn't trust myself to handle a sword right now nor could I have them lose too much blood.
I left the tent and went to grab two horses. I returned back to the tent, tied the mouths and hands of the two men before dragging them out. I mounted them on one horse and I did the same on the other before riding off into the desert, away from the camp site. Once we were far enough I dismounted my horse and dragged them from theirs too.
"Ok so this is your last chance to tell me who has gone to warn the enemy, when he left and what route he took," I said as I removed the cloth I had tied around their mouths. Still no answer.
"Well seems like you guys are gonna eat a lot of sand tonight," I said sighing. I first tied the skinny one to my horse and the shorter one to the other horse. They tried to put up a fight but non of them really had a fighting bone in their body.
"Let's go Zen, Saber," I said to my horse and the other. Zen took off first and Saber followed. I heard the two idiots trying to resist the pull of the horses but ended up falling onto the sand and getting dragged.
"Stop.... please!" the skinny one cried out first. We hadn't even picked up the pace and he began whining like a baby. I ignored him and urged the horses to move faster.
"Please stop..... we will tell you everything," the skinny one cried out again. I slowed down my pace but didn't stop.
"Tell me what I want to know then I'll stop," I said.
"Yes, yes we are spies. Bes came to us and offered us money in exchange for our services. We agreed because we are orphans and poor. We did it for the money," The skinny one said. At that moment I lost all control of my anger. They were ready to betray their land for money? How could they be so selfish and... ugh!!!! I picked up the pace again. I was gonna make them suffer.
"Hey.... you said you would stop. Please stop my back is burning," I heard the short one scream in pain. But I didn't care, they would pay for what they did. I then remembered this wasn't the time to go around punishing worthless pieces of meat. I had more important things to take care of. I slowed down.
"Continue," I said.
"Khen overheard some of the generals talk about the sabotage and he headed out a little after sunset today. He is going through the Sinai pass," I heard the skinny one say, he was barely audible. The Sinai pass but that's a really treacherous route, shortest way to the camp but it wasn't worth the trouble. It's because it's open, so there is absolutely no cover from the scorching sun or any preying eyes. I had to leave now if I had any chance of catching Khen.
I rode over to an abandoned well and threw the two idiots inside.
"You can stay here till I return to deal with you. Maybe you can think over your life decisions," I said throwing in a water bag and a few fruits. As much as I would have loved to see them starve to death I wasn't that heartless.
I rode back to camp and went straight to Mahu's tent. Yesterday Darius was in a dilemma of whom to take on the mission. He had mentioned a few names to me. Mahu was his second choice for the mission. I had no choice but to trust in Darius's man.
"General?" a sleepy face met mine.
"Mahu please come over to my tent, I need your help," I said without wasting my time with casual greetings.
"Yes, sir," Mahu said as he stopped rubbing his eyes and followed me to my tent without a word. I guessed he sensed something was wrong.
"I need you to look after the camp for a day or two. Keep an eye out for anything suspicious. You're in charge of the camp. Here take this emblem," I said seriously as I handed him the General's emblem. Mahu seemed like a very capable young man. I had a good feeling about him.
"But why Sir," He asked looking confused as he took the emblem.
"I'm sorry but I can't tell you anything more. If anyone asks you where I am, just tell them that I'm not well and I'm resting in my tent. You can go back to your tent now. Oh and do not mention our conversation to anyone else," I said sternly.
"Sure sir. I will do as I'm instructed," Mahu said leaving. Although he did as he was told I could sense his uneasiness. As much as I wanted to tell him what was going on it was best he was kept in the dark. I just hoped he wasn't any sort of spy.
I packed a few things that I would require. Most of it was food and water. I placed my saddle firmly on Zen and loaded my stuff on it. Once I was done I got on and rode in the direction of the Sinai pass. I just hoped I would make it in time.
