Chapter 9 ~ A Colour Compensation is Anger
Threads of fabricated thoughts are torn, shred, ripped apart by the shear will of this new emotion, growing stronger and stronger like a surging head rush. It burns, oh so terribly it burns, coursing fire within the veins it had become encased within. It yelled, screamed, raged, to be free, to break away from the constraints it was held to.
Marcelle groaned as she blinked back burning tears, unsure as to if it was due to the freezing wind the window provided or the fire that caused destruction within her. She pulled the window up hastily, every movement filled with a ridged force that showed pain, Gerald constantly stealing worried glances as his friend jolted and jerked, as if every surface was searing hot.
"AAAAAGHHHHH" Marcelle's voice was released from her throat, scratchy and raw. "Universe – you're a fucking dick!" G continued to drive the new roads they had forced, going off track to avoid any others, they weren't far from their goals, he knew they'd make it if they persisted, but Marcelle had begun to show signs of cooperation failure, that part was a concern.
Her body threw involuntary fits as she screamed, clearly uncomfortable for the way her limbs protested to the movement. G avoided communication, fearful for what he had witnessed. A possession of some sort, controlled by Universe, he figured, looking up into the air as a hope that it could reveal a prayer.
Of course there was no answer there for him, causing his shaking hands to turn white as he gripped the steering wheel with a force that could break bones. Marcelle gasped for air, chest heaving forward as if she was in dire need for oxygen, eyes wide open as her mouth screamed, G frowned with concern and fear as he tried to distract himself, not entirely sure of what to do. He couldn't stop now, not while on the run, but he also had to help Marcelle.
All at once everything then went silent, Marcelle slumping back into her chair, eyes shut and head lolling to the side with the rhythm of the car, passed out and unanimated.
"Oh fucking- Marcelle? Marcelle? I swear to god Universe if you hurt her-" His threats were cut short by the girl's arms, reaching forward towards the glove compartment, almost as if she were a puppet on strings. Her body stayed limp otherwise as she found what she had been searching for, a notepad and pen, instantly flipping the pages hurriedly, as if time was running out, scribbling words of the sorts with a speed that left G shocked.
A scream jolted through the car, scaring G instantly as Marcelle was almost brought back to life, coughing and spluttering, gripping the dashboard as a dire attempt to regain her control and balance after such traumatic experience. "FUCK!" She burst, heavily breathing as she wiped her forehead from the steady trail of sweat, Her head was pounding heavily, but no longer in as much excruciating pain as before.
"Fuck." She breathed, shaking her head to turn to G, pale and stiff in place.
"A-are...are you ok?" He whispered.
"Y-yeah. I'm fine." She answered shortly.
"What- what was that?" The question wasn't supposed to relieve an answer, but somehow it did.
"Possession, Universe possessed me and I was struggling to fight it." Marcelle swallowed thickly, "Usually it's an agreed movement, this time it came with force... and I was too weak to fight it off."
"Will you be ok?" G worriedly asked, hesitantly placing a hand of comfort on the girl's knee, expertly driving with the other.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm fine, bloody painful as fuck though."
"I could imagine." G replied empathetically, "You punched an officer, broke his nose, constantly screamed and threw random fits, something was bound to hurt." There was a pause that G took to consider his next question's wording. "What did Universe want?" Marcelle frowned, that was the one thing she couldn't figure out.
"I have no idea." She said honestly, "I was trying to figure it out... I couldn't, and now the dumb entity wants a break to cool off." She threw her hands up in the air, clearly expressing her frustration, throwing her hands in her lap with a crunch, creasing the papers her possessed state had written on. "The fuck?"
"You wrote on those, couldn't see since you were too fast and I am driving but it's obviously something..." An awkward tension filled the air as Marcelle gave a sideways glance of confusion, slowly turning her head towards the papers, gathering them up and clearing her throat.
"W-well..." She paused hesitantly, "Let's see what the fucker had to say."
"It was Monday. That no good, useless, start of the week that brought nothing but depression day. A school day. The day where every single child leaves home early to attend school where education was thought to be above all order.
I walked in, like a shadow, something that was always there, but never noticed. Like usual, and like always.
Depression wasn't a funny thing. Many made jokes or laughed at the idea, or pretended to have it themselves so they could skip out on class. It wasn't funny but I didn't care. What good would caring do? An outcast was what I was made into, defending my disease was to do nothing.
I had no friends either - physical in the least.
I know why too.
It was meant to be to never have friends. It was predetermined by the entity I could only talk to. The entity doesn't really have a name, nor a body. It is just there, on my shoulder, in my ear, telepathically giving my thoughts the words it wished to say if only it had a mouth.
I named it Universe. For I believed, before it had told me, that it could control every choice, path and destiny that ever existed. Universe created Mandalas and time pockets and alternate worlds, because to Universe, my world was a game.
Why I was chosen to be able to communicate with the most powerful entity in existence?
I was a null.
I was Universe's one small accident that could never be removed. Why else are there people in the world that can communicate with the dead or determine futuristic events or communicate to spirits? It's because Universe tends to fuck up quite often.
You see, all those people have a binding contract to their embodiment, they don't know it, but it's there so that whenever Universe accidentally kills someone to early, another null can come to fill in the mistake by communicating with the deceased.
Nulls are mistakes as well. We are those people that were never meant to be born, miracles explained with a science attached because Universe is picky and doesn't like to make many mistakes.
But that brings us back to the previous question, why am I to communicate to Universe and no other Null can?
Well I've wondered the same thing many times, perhaps I'm crazy, delusional or something like that where I am mentally destroyed – not that I'm not, but at the same time I also know why. I am the biggest fuck up in history.
I was the only mistake that was never meant to happen that didn't have a purpose to correct – I had free will, Universe made certain that all of it's nulls chose a path that was already laid before them, I however was self-aware that those paths exist and had become accustomed to the entity.
So Universe hung with me. Keeping an eye out, occasionally sending me signs for the path way it wanted me to follow. I mean, sometimes I'd follow, sometimes, however, I liked to mess with Universe and make it hard for it to get back on track so I ignored the signs.
We became friends, in a sort of way – my freedom was never something that could be taken away, the ironic thing is, Universe is making me write this very story – for some reason that is unknown but I too want to pursue.
But none of that mattered. To this day I wonder if my depression and plan for an untimely end was Universe or mine. I believe that Universe potentially got sick of me... but then it changed.
Which takes me back to the very beginning – that Monday morning when I was about to go to school with dread and despair in my eyes.
That was to be my last Monday.
And then I met her.
Someone so different, I wonder if Universe ever regretted their decisions.
You see she saved me. Got me to stop all the bad. But Universe had changed her path, messed up an orderly plan and threw it all away to save a null. Nulls weren't meant to be saved, especially at the cost of a normal happy girl. But this change of course was a lesson to Universe, who now could not change fate as she had mingled into my undetermined path.
No longer could I see a future for her because she was connected to me, an ethereal bond had tied us together and now I could feel her emotions and predict her actions. My future insight was nothing compared to me being with her.
And so I fell in love.
Universe would occasionally communicate to me, allow me to continue with my future predictions and second senses, but I also knew that Universe was upset.
Universe was jealous that I was with another, perhaps that's why Universe constantly tried to intervene, but the damage was done and now our lives were intertwined. I think Universe may have been in love with me.
Of course it would have never worked.
I was a Null – a human mistake created, and Universe was the creator, an entity so powerful I couldn't even see.
Love kills. It really does, but I won't forget what Universe has sacrificed for me. In a way, I'm happy Universe was so in love that they changed fate, but I also feel bad for carrying a heavy burden.
Who knows, maybe one day Universe will regain control of me again, and her and change everything once more, correct the final mistake it made."
Marcelle placed the paper down, unsure of what to say. "Well, I guess it's clear what happened." G began, "Universe is in love with you." Marcelle shook her head in denial.
"No, no no no." She clutched her head in anger, unsure of what else she could do – Universe was the one in control, not her. With a newly found calmness, she raised her head, staring straight ahead onto the road. "That just won't do." She mumbled, "That won't do at all."
