Complications

Suguro's day was already complicated without Shima sending his two daughters to visit. He'd been put in charge of pulling in buyers by feeding them information and displaying the lab where their dinosaurs were hatched.

He was also in charge of something much more exciting, but it was difficult. They'd raised their very own dinosaur. They'd created her from a test tube and raised her in an enclosed area. She'd grown bigger than they thought, but she was definitely a good attraction to show the guests in a few months.

He'd already shown the potential buyers around. Now he just had to meet up with the girls. He made his way over to the Main Entrance Hall, going down the stairs. He glanced out over the sea of children and parents and spotted a head of unmistakable curly brown hair.

"Mira, is that you?" He called. Next to the tall, tanned teenaged girl was a smaller, paler little girl. She had long, straight black hair.

The younger one, Kana, ran up to him and hugged him as hard as she could around the middle.

He laughed. "Hey kiddo! It's been a while!" He grinned. Kana looked like an even mix of Shima and Izumo while Mira was the spitting image of her mother, just with insanely curly hair from Shima's mother's side.

She walked up to them, looking moody. Probably didn't want to be stuck with her kid sister. Typical teenager.

"Woah! Last time I saw you, you were like...." He holds out a hand, gauging that she'd been about as tall as Kana.

"What was that, a few years ago? Four years?" Suguro tried to remember.

"Seven." Mira snapped. Suguro recoiled. Oh geez, this was awkward. He was not good with kids.

"So you've already got your VIP wristbands. Here, this is for food." He handed an envelope to Mira. "And Zara here is going to take great care of you until I'm done working tonight, alright?"

"Y-You're not coming with us?" Kana frowned. Ugh. Now the kid was getting upset.

"I really wish that I could, but tomorrow I can take you into the control room, show you behind the scenes and all of that. That's....uh....that's gonna be cool, right?" He tried. This is why I never married.

Kana was now serving him the silent treatment and Mira was typing on her phone, obviously uninterested.

"Ok, so I'll see you tonight at uh....eight I think. So, you know, have fun, don't get lost." He told them. Kana nodded and Mira steered the little girl away.

Suguro walked away, answering the insistent tone of his phone.

The control room was a high-tech control room consisting of numerous consoles and workstations facing a huge wall of monitors, the center most of which displayed a map of the island. Technicians work diligently day in and day out.

A guy sitting at his desk grimaced and turned on his comm. "Two juvenile  Triceratops are going at it again. Should I tranq them or are you coming over to take care of this?" He asked into the radio static.

"No, tranq 'em." An answer came.

"Oh....oh sweet Jesus. They're rutting." The man sighed.

Suguro walked in holding a coffee cup and went straight to two people he was especially fond of. Two of the technicians, Lewin and Lucy. Lewin's desk was always covered with toy dinosaurs and he was wearing a vintage Jurassic Park shirt.

"What's the live count?" Suguro asked.

"Twenty-three thousand, two-eighteen." Lucy answered.

"Incidents?" He added.

"Um...four kids in the lost and found and twenty down with heat stroke, and some–" Suguro cut him off.

"Lewin, where'd you get that?"

"Oh, the shirt? Found it on eBay for a pretty reasonable price. This place is awesome, but I'm telling you guys, that first park? It was legit." He insisted as his friends groaned.

"Hey, I have a lot of respect for it. They didn't need these genetic hybrids like we do. They had real, honest to God, dinosaurs." Lewin was gushing again. He did this often. He was a fanboy of the original Park and he loved monitoring the Dinos they had on the island.

"So, Suguro, did you close the deal?" Lucy asked to shut him up.

"Yeah. It's pretty much a done deal. Verizon Wireless™ Presents the Antonomus Rex." He announced. Lewin dropped his head. "Uggh, that's so baaaad." He groaned as Lucy snickered.

Suguro looked up to the bigger screens and frowned. "Hey, why are the West Plains closed?" Ge pointed to the screen.

"Oh, just a Pachy roaming outside his zone, but he's fully sedated and ready for relocation. He'll be back home shortly." Lucy explained.

"Again? I know Security said the invisible fences were a no-fail, but that's the third time this month." Suguro counted.

"Well, the Pachys usually short out their implants when they butt heads. Probably should've placed those better." Lucy pointed out.

"We need to get it out of there." Suguro's brows furrowed and he scowled.

"Hey, show some sympathy. He's got five milligrams of carfentanil." Lewin told his friend, pointing to the monitor.

"Yeah, he's stoned pretty good." Lucy agreed.

Suguro rolled his eyes.

"I mean, you do realize that these are actual, living animals right?" Lewin turned to the man. Suguro nodded, leaving the room to go meet his boss.

Suguro got aboard the just- landed helicopter and sat in the backseat. Up front was the park owner, Mephisto Pheles, and his flight instructor. Mephisto removed his sunglasses.

"Suguro!" He greeted. Suguro quirked a brow.

"Mr. Pheles. You're....flying? Did you get your licence?" The man wondered if it had been a good idea to get in this helicopter as they took off shakily. The owner only laughed and told them to relax.

Suguro attempted to tell him the statistics and talk business, but Pheles didn't want to hear any of it.

"Don't think about the money, think about the people! About these beautiful creatures we've raised!" Pheles grinned. "Now show me my new dinosaur!" The man cheered.

They landed at a facility with high walls that were being built up even more.

"What's with all this?" Pheles questioned.

Paddock 12 was a large fortress-like structure with forty foot tall reinforced walls and an enormous gate at the front. The exterior was still under construction. Everyone got out of the helicopter. The instructor, clutching his stomach, ran to the bushes and lost his lunch.

Suguro snickered. "Is he okay?" He asked just to be considerate.

"Ah, he's just being a drama queen!" Pheles waved it off. "Why are they still building, though?"

"Ah, right! We planned to open in May, but Asset Containment insisted we build the walls up higher. It's bigger than expected. A lot bigger." Suguro answered.

"That's good. Something new!" Pheles followed his employee into the observation room–a large control room with computers and enormous windows overlooking the interior of the enclosure. A supervisor stood at one of the touch screen Thermal Imaging consoles as they entered.

"We hit a few speed bumps in the early stages. It began to anticipate where the food would come from." Suguro leaned closer to his boss and spoke in a lower tone. "One of the handlers almost lost an arm. The others threatened to quit if I couldn't guarantee their safety, too."

The two men walked to the windows, observing the dense, humid environment inside. "So she's intelligent?" Pheles guessed.

"For a dinosaur, yeah."

Pheles pointed. "And what is that?"

Where he'd pointed, there were wide, deep cracks in the glass.

"It tried to break through." Suguro said uncomfortably before smiling awkwardly. How else do you tell your boss that your genetically designed dino tried to get out?

"Ah. I do like her spirit!" Pheles chuckled.

They heard a growl outside. Something enormous moved through the trees at the far end of the enclosure. The outline of a large dinosaur with blue skin moved through the fronds, but Antonomus Rex didn't fully emerge. Pheles stared at her hard, trying to see her better.

"She is....blue? What an unusual shade for a dinosaur." He murmured in awe.

"Think it'll scare the kids?" Suguro mused.

"Kids? This one will give the parents nightmares! It's fantastic!" Pheles laughed. Suguro smiled. He'd supervised this project and it had good payoff.

A beady, slit-pupiled green eye peered at them through the foliage.

"Can she see?" Pheles wondered.

"They said it could sense thermal radiation. It can probably feel our body heat, like snakes do." Suguro answered.

"Ah. I say, weren't there two?" Pheles cocked his head to the side.

"Uhm....there were two, just in case this one didn't survive infancy. But uh....she ate him." Suguro said somewhat nervously.

"She what?" Pheles stared at him wide-eyed. He simply smiled nervously. The man nodded and looked up at the ceiling. Outside, the Antonomus Rex moved away through the jungle

"She ate the sibling." Suguro repeated quietly.

"So I trust the paddock is quite safe?" Pheles changed the subjec t. "Yes sir. We have the best engineers in the world."

"Yes well, so did Emenescue." Pheles muttered. He was talking about the creator of Jurassic Park. He liked to often. He sort of looked up to the man, even though the Park had been a massacre before it even opened.

"There's an ex-Navy veteran here. Part of a research program one of my companies is running. Rin Okumura." Pheles mentioned.

"Yeah, I know who he is." Suguro grumbled, looking a little miffed.

"His animals often try to escape. They're very smart. That means he has to be smarter." Pheles continued.

"Oh, please. He only thinks he's smarter." Suguro snorted. Pheles let the rude tone escape his notice.

"Bring him in. Let him inspect the paddock. Maybe he'll see something we cannot." Pheles ordered, leaving the room.
