The Plan

Nick

Judy stared with hidden knowledge at the sheep above her. "What are you going to do?" She asked, looking confident in her and my plan. "Kill me?" She looked back at me with a glint in her eye, as we shared our moment. We would get the evidence we needed. Bellwether would give in without even knowing it. The sheep gave out a laugh of twisted glee. "Of course not." She cocked the gun and took aim at my open neck. "He is."

As I heard the gun fire I braced for the impact of the blueberry. It hit me right above my shoulder. Crying out in pain, I twisted and fell. Damn. That actually hurt a bit. Judy cried out and rushed over, oriented as if to be genuinely concerned and scared for my life and hers. I tried to stay in character, swiping frantically at the dark stain. Then I arched my back and began the routine I had been coming up with to fool the sheep since the start of the plan.

"Yes? Police!" Bellwether was called the ZPD. Jokes on her, I thought, clawing at the ground. "There's a savage fox in the Natural History Museum! Officer Hopps is down! Please hurry!"

I could feel Judy next to me, telling me to fight the serum. But as I continues to pretend the demise of my own mind, I felt something else. The blueberry stain had suddenly grow hot. It burned my shoulder with real pain. I felt a warmth spread across my body, sending shivers down my spine. Along with another feeling, a deep, primal instinct that choked me and felt...wild. I jolted with a sudden and horrifying realization that the bullet had been no blueberry.

I tried to turn to Judy to tell her to run but it came out as a whimper. Then it turned into a vicious growl. Her eyes flickered with fear, but returned to normal as she reassured herself of her own safety. I cried out desperately to her, but I was then overtaken by a bout of spasms.

"Nick, don't do this," said Judy, close to me. Her next words were lost to a savage howl inside me that I fought to keep back.

Kill. Hunt. Feed.

Tears sprung forth but were shut off by my eyes violently shutting closed as my grip on my mind wavered. I was losing myself.

The smell of scared prey filled my nose. It filled my animal side with hunger. A desire to kill. Kill. Kill.

Kill. Kill. Kill. Kill. Kill.

I once again tried to call to Judy, but I couldn't. My muscles twitched and my eyesight took on a red tinge. Then it was taken over by a flash of Judy's smiling face as I realized what I was about to do.

Third-person

Nick's bright green eyes snapped open. Judy gasped and scrambled back, scrabbling at the ground with her bad leg. There was something...off about his eyes. There was something wrong with them. Too bright almost, but with a clouded sense to them as well.

She turned tail and ran as Nick got up, muscles stretching, and gave chase. She fought the urge to feel fear. It was just an act, right? Nick was on her side. We were going to solve this case, together.

She heard the assistant mayor above them, giggling like a maniac. "Gosh, think of the headlines! 'Hero Cop Killed by Savage Fox!'"

Judy stumbled over the fake landscape. She fumbled for the carrot pen to catch the villain's confession.

Stay calm, she told herself as she backed herself into the wall, Nick still on her heels, snarling wildly. He inched closer. She couldn't shake the feeling that there was something off about him. Judy reassured herself that she was not in any danger. She focused on Bellwether.

"So that's it? Prey fears predator and you stay in power?"
U
"Yeah, pretty much," Bellwether gave her response, chuckling.

The new cop prompted for more. "It won't work!"

"Fear always works." The sheep studied the gun joyfully. "And I'll dart every predator in Zootopia to keep it that way."

That was all Judy needed. She relaxed, looking back at Nick, smiling knowingly. When he didn't stop crouching and inching closer, a shadow of doubt flickered through her. "Nick?" She said, putting her paw out, concerned. His eyes grew dilated and pained as he flinched and let out a suffering yowl. He jumped back and buried his muzzle in his paws, snarling and clawing at his fur. Realization came along with fear as Judy then realized what had really happened.

Bellwether laughed at Judy's disbelief.

"What?! You think I didn't notice your little blueberry plan? I'm not a moron Judy. You should know that".

Judy scrambled wildly as Nick suddenly lept at her, the primal look back in his bloodshot eyes. She felt fear, and was scared for her life. "Nick!" She said again, desperation springing to her eyes. "Nick please, fight it!"

Nick's consciousness fluttered back into existence.

"Carrots? J-judy! N-no I don't...I don't want..." he gasped through clenched teeth.

"Run, please Judy, run..."

Judy dashed the through the undergrowth, throwing a decoy back at the wild fox, desperately trying to get away.

Nick

As I caught the decoy mid-air, I tore at the fabric and crunched at the plastic. It felt good. It shouldn't, but it did. I fought back the instincts but my muscles were no longer in my control. I tore viciously at the decoy, shredding it and demolishing it. I spotted Judy again, but this time I fought harder, forcing my eyes closed, even though I knew I had to kill her.

Yes. It was the right thing to do. Kill her. I convulsed with a snarl, ripping at the remains of the dummy. The savage voice inside me urged me on. I clawed at my ears to block it out, but it stayed there. Tears sprung to my eyes once again as I pounced on my only friend.

Third-Person

Judy screamed, her leg giving out beneath her. She fought to kick Nick off but he snapped at her neck, meaning to kill. She had never felt so much pain, her leg was on fire. She caught heard Bellwether speaking to another person, but she couldn't see who. Nick bucked and scratched her cheek, leaving three distinct and families scratches. She screamed again and vainly tried to pull out the carrot pen as a last resort, to play the tape so that the truth may be revealed.

As it played its deadly song, the other person gasped and looked at Bellwether, who had paled and looked afraid. Then Judy regained her strength for just a moment at the sound of triumph, and kicked Nick off of her, his jaw smacking up with a loud crack.

She lay there, dazed, her neck burning and bleeding where she had tried to stop Nick from killing her.

"N-Nick. Please," she whimpered weakly.

Nick shook on the ground, foam emanating from his mouth. He glanced around wildly, no trance of sanity left in his broken green eyes.

Nick

I felt nothing. I couldn't feel anything. Then I was in my old room, my mother at the door. I called out for help, but then choked, a muzzle tight around my mouth, not allowing me to breathe.

"H-he...lp..m-me" I called out, breathing in short gasps. My mother stood there, doing nothing. Then, she morphed into the bullies who had tormented me for years. They laughed at my suffering. They beat me mercilessly, sparing me none. The muzzle grew tighter. Tighter. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't...

Gasp.

I gasped and arched my back on the ground, fighting for my life. I saw Judy, barely conscious on the ground beside me, bleeding and weak.

I realized what was happening as the nightmare once again resurfaced. I had done this. I was wild. Rabid. I needed to stop.

But it felt so right.

I fought hard, but failed. As I was about to pounce on the beaten body of my friend, a sharp pain hit my bruised shoulder, followed by a sickening numbed pain. I welcomed the pain. I deserved it. I had hurt the one who called me a partner. As I once again drifted to unconsciousness, I heard a small voice weakly call out my name in desperation. Then the ground met my face as I fell into an inky black void of my own torment.
