Chapter 7
Bianca's POV
After about an hour of us sitting there, Marcus stood up and started looking through his backpack. He pulled out a small bag.
"What's that?" I asked.
"Watch," he said. He pressed a button on it and threw it on the ground. Suddenly, it started to unfold and rise until it stopped as a tent.
"Woah," I said, impressed.
"My dad made it. He was an inventor," Marcus told me.
"Ah," I said, not really knowing what else to say. I could feel the awkwardness between us. We both remembered the fight we'd been having before the lightning, but neither of us had brought it up yet. In the worry of getting back, we hadn't really been thinking about it, but now we both were.
"Look, Marcus, I-"
"Forget it."
"But, are y-"
"I said forget it."
"Ok," I replied cautiously.
"We're going to want a fire later," Marcus said out of nowhere. "I'll go get wood." Before I can say anything, he walks into the forest and is gone.
Marcus's POV
I probably should have let Bianca apologize to me. I probably shouldn't have run off into the woods alone. Maybe then I wouldn't still have this weight on my chest. But what's done is done, and now I'm in the woods, alone, with no bag or anything to hold the wood I gather.
I tried to gather the wood into a pile so I could pick it all up with one arm, but when I tried to put a somewhat larger log on top, the whole pile collapsed and most of it rolled away.
I sat down on a large rock and sighed. Bianca was right. I am useless. Before I could stop it, a single tear rolled down my cheek. Then, I heard a voice.
"Marcus? Where are you?" It's Bianca. She entered the clearing I was in and surveyed the situation. "And this is exactly why I followed you out here. I knew something like this would happen." She plopped the bag she'd brought with her on the ground and started putting wood in the bag before stopping. She looked at me expectantly, then cleared her throat.
"What?" I asked.
"I'm not going to do this by myself, now am I," she said, glaring at me. Quickly, I jumped up to help her.
Bianca's POV
As Marcus and I stuffed wood into our bag, I thought about the little white lie I'd told earlier.
"This is exactly why I followed you out here. I knew something like this would happen."
That wasn't exactly true. After Marcus left, I immediately thought of a thousand things I could have said to him. Then, I started to worry. I worried about his safety, but mostly I was worried about his emotional state. We both knew he wasn't fine about the whole thing, I'd royally messed up and I needed to own it.
As I searched for him, I thought of various things I'd say when I found him, ranging from "are you ok" to "don't you run off like that," but all that vanished when I saw what was going on in the clearing. Marcus was sitting on a rock with a tear dripping down his face, and logs were all over the place. All of a sudden I remembered how useless he was. I threw the bag down and you know what happened from then on.
Currently, Marcus and I were dragging the bag of wood (wet wood might I add) back to camp. Suddenly, I heard a thud and turned around to see Marcus had dropped his half of the bag yet again!
I groaned. Of all the people I had to be stuck in the middle of the woods with, it had to be Marcus, to most useless person in the grade.
Yep, my life sucks.
