Chapter 4

The next morning, I get out of bed just as the tip of the moon is going down. I'm not usually an early riser. Only on special days. And today is special. But nerve wracking. I hope I don't stuff up, especially when he talks with that hot voice of his.

I get to match a face with his voice. I hope he's just as hot. That would make two hot men on my second day here.

What should I wear? First impressions matter. A lot. Although, I'm sure what I say will be more important than what I wear.

I don't even know if it's formal or not. Dante might know. He's probably sleeping though. I might go and check. I still have time to go for a walk, shower and get ready.

He said he's on the top floor, I think. I attempt to flatten my hair a bit before picking up my phone and walking out the door, locking it behind me. Luckily the floors are not made of tiles because these thin socks provide no sort of warmth whatsoever.

No one is in the corridor. Not surprising since it's barely past six o' clock. I don't know about here, but in Sydney, many office jobs started around nine in the morning. Reaching the elevator, I press the up button and wait for it.

Once the elevator doors open, I step in since it's empty and I don't have to wait for anyone to enter or exit. I'm not complaining.

I press the number 23, since that's the highest there is, then wait for the elevator to rise. It doesn't stop at any level, which is a huge relief because I'm really not in the mood for being social, especially people who I've never met.

When it finally reaches the twenty third floor, I step out and look around. This is different from my level. The corridor is much shorter, with only one door on each side. Straight ahead is a double door with the name Dante written in gold above the doors. He's probably in there.

I hope I don't wake him. I don't really know what time people wake up and calling them is not ideal since it will definitely wake them up. Along the walls, there are many frames containing certificates and pictures of Dante.

W.O.W. I have never seen a finer specimen of a man in my life. He's never smiling in any of the pictures but that only adds to his hotness.

By the time I'm done looking at the photos, it's almost 6:45am. Oops. I took a little longer than I anticipated. He was just too irresistible.

Plucking up the courage, I softly knock three times on the door.

How long am I supposed to wait before I leave?

"Come in. The door's unlocked." Well that was quick. I carefully open the door, trying not to be too loud. I close the door after me, holding it so it doesn't slam. When I turn around, I'm met with an office and an apartment mixed together.

There are two open doors on the right. One looking like a bedroom and the other, a kitchen. On the left is a small kitchen. Against the back wall to the right, is a greyish-blue sofa set, one large sofa and two smaller ones, with a black glass table in the middle.

To the left is a big desk, containing papers, lots of them. There are also small holders with some stationery. An open laptop sits in the middle of the desk, with Dante behind it.

"You're up early," he says.

"Thank you Captain Obvious," I joke. It's a very calming and peaceful environment.

"How did you sleep last night? Were the beds comfortable? Is there anything you want to change?"

"Everything was fine, thank you. It was perfect. I actually had the best sleep I've had in a long time," I admit. Because of you. You're handsome, have an awesome personality and kept a smile on my face the whole night.

"That's great to hear. If you ever want anything changed, just let me know. What brings you here?"

"Thank you. Umm, well, I wasn't sure what to wear to the appointment and since you're good friends with Ian, I thought you'd know what I should wear."

He chuckles at my concern. "Wear whatever you want. As long as you're comfortable."

I groan, knowing that this isn't helping in any way. "Well that narrows things down."

His voice takes on a gentle tone. "Listen, he really is not concerned about looks. He looks for personality and intentions. You'll be fine. Don't stress about it, ok? You'll get a job."

It's not about that. I want to make a good impression on Ian. Forget the job. Ian's voice is stuck in my head and there's something about his voice that makes me want to impress him.

"Ok," I sigh in defeat. It's better to not explain sometimes. "Sorry for disturbing you." I turn around and walk towards the door, hoping he'll call me back and say something. But he doesn't. And for some reason that hurts. Why would he pay attention to me? Why did I even think that I had a chance?

I'm not even in a relationship and I feel like I have boyfriend issues.

Four more hours until I meet Ian. I resort to picking out black jeans, a beige woollen jumper with some black flats. I run for my shower, only washing my body since I washed my hair yesterday. Taking out the straightener from my suitcase, I plug it in and get dressed while I wait for it to heat up.

Since my hair is wavy and just below shoulder length, it only takes about half an hour to straighten properly. I pick up my mascara and layer it a few times on my lashes, then add some clear gloss. I'm not much of a makeup person but I do want to be presentable.

Three more hours. Why did I get ready so early?

My phone begins to vibrate as I pick out a black side bag to bring with me.

Is it alright if we move our meeting to 9:00am or 10:00am?

I reply with a 'Yes, I can make it at 9:00am. Thank you' and call up Dante to tell him about the change. One hour then. Better to get it over and done with.

"Hello?"

"Hey. Ian just messaged to move the appointment so there's no need for you to accompany me. I don't want to ruin your work schedule." I pin the phone between my ear and shoulder as I pack my bag. Mascara, lip gloss, keys, tissues, a pen and a paper. And my wallet. I can't forget that.

"I will accompany you! You'll never ruin my work schedule. What time is the meeting?"

I freeze up when he raises his voice. I can't stand people yelling at me for no reason. It's happened too many times for me not to be affected. Swallowing the tears back, I place the phone next to me and try to breathe before it gets too difficult.

"Lexi? Lexi! Dammit answer me! I'm coming down." I hear him hang up and the fear increases. He's going to hurt me. It always happens.

"Open up, Lexi!" He knocks on the door, leaving me to run to the bathroom and lock the door, tears streaming down. Please don't come in. Just leave me alone. I'll calm down by myself.

"Lexi! What happened, sweetheart? You're scaring me. Please talk to me," Dante pleads, knocking on the bathroom door. Maybe he didn't mean to yell. This is a new me. I have to deal with things differently now and act grown up.

"I'm going to open the door, ok? I'm not going to hurt you." I watch as the lock turns and I curl further in the corner of the bathroom. The door slowly opens, revealing a very worried looking Dante. He crosses the bathroom in two steps and picks me up gently, bridal style.

"What happened?" he asks, walking out of the bathroom and sitting on the bed. "I was so worried. I thought something happened to you. Please don't do that again. I need you to talk to me if something is bothering you. Please tell me."

"It's silly," I sniffle, not looking him in the eye.

"No, no, don't say that. Nothing is silly. It may seem small but it has an impact on you. Tell me. We can work through it together."

"Well you started screaming and I got scared and I thought you were going to hurt me because that's what always happened before," I rush out as quickly as possible.

"I would never hurt you, sweetheart. Don't think that way." He rocks me gently, which I find extremely uncomfortable. I'm not a person who enjoys physical contact a lot. I sit up and get out of his arms.

"I'm sorry Dante. That was highly inappropriate of me to act that way, especially after all you've done for me. If you want to kick me out, I understand," I mutter. He is the boss of this place and we should not be that close with each other.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying that this should not have happened. You're the boss of this place. I'm renting from you. I should not have been in your arms as if we are lovers or something. That could get you in trouble. And I was acting inappropriately. You have every right to talk to me that way and I had no right to-"

"Stop. Firstly, we were friends before you moved in, so this behaviour is not inappropriate. Secondly, I am the boss, the highest position in power. I don't think I will get myself in trouble anytime soon."

He's the highest boss? He probably earns millions or something. Definitely not a chance for me. Remaining silent, I sit on the bed, opposite from Dante. He keeps his gaze at the window, eyebrows furrowed, thinking deeply.

"I should be getting there soon," I announce, breaking the silence. I hurriedly check the mirror in the bathroom to make sure I look fine, then grab my phone and black bag and head out. As expected, Dante follows silently.

"If it's alright with you, I would like to buy breakfast for us," I say as the elevator descends.

"Then you have to promise that you'll never pay for anything for me again," he fights back.

"Please, Dante. You did so much for me yesterday and this hardly makes up for it. Also, do you think Ian would want something? In case he hasn't had breakfast yet." Why did I ask about Ian? I don't even know him and I'm offering to buy him breakfast.

I get attached way too fast. That's not a good thing.

"I think that's a good idea. Yes you can buy us breakfast, but only this once." He gave in. Finally. I'm going to buy a whole banquet for breakfast to at least repay some of what he's done for me.

We walk out of the and he shows me the way to a cafe just around the corner. I let him put his and Ian's order before me. Once he's done, I order two cheese and bacon rolls and a hot chocolate for myself, then ask to double whatever Dante ordered. In case they get hungry. Also, I don't believe that Dante ordered a lot so I don't pay too much.

Little does he know.

I pay with cash since I have to get a new card from London. I withdrew all my money and converted it to cash before I came here. Risky, but necessary.

I thank the worker as he puts the drinks in a holder and the food in bags. I carry the bags on my wrists and hold the drinks in one hand.

"Let's go," I say to Dante, waiting for him to show the way. He absent mindedly leads the way as he continues his conversation on the phone. We stop at a traffic light and he finishes his phone call and turns to me.

His eyes widen and his mouth drops open. "Lexi! What did you buy?!"

"Hush. You and Ian are grown men and I know you'll probably still be hungry with what you ordered," I explain, trying to brush it off.

"I'm going to pay you for that extra stuff you ordered," he says.

"No you won't because you said I could buy breakfast. Now look forward before we get run over." That shuts him up as we cross the road.

He stops in front of a three storey building with a sign reading, 'Ian's Job Seeking'.

"This is where he works once a week. His main building is about half an hour away from here." Makes sense. Dante opens the door and holds it for me.

A receptionist, a middle aged woman, sits at the front desk. She looks up at us and asks, "Lexi?"

"Yes mam," I confirm.

"Please take a seat. Sir will be with you shortly. I'll let him know you're here."

"Thank you."

I take a seat with Dante by my side. He offers to take the bags off me but I refuse. Has he never been shopping before? It's an unspoken rule to only make one trip, no matter how many bags there are.

A few minutes pass before the receptionist calls us to head up to the third floor. Dante leads and makes an effort to open all doors and make sure I don't trip on any stairs. Great, there's no elevator. Maybe this is a sign that I should start exercising. On second thoughts, no. Why did I even consider that?

We reach the top of the stairs and take a moment to catch our breaths. Well I take a moment to catch my breath. Dante just looks at me weirdly before knocking and opening the doors.

I tighten my grip on the drink holder as I take in the appearance of one of the most breathtaking men in the world, leaning on his desk, looking at his phone.

"Hey Ian," Dante says.

That's when Ian looks up and my breath catches in my throat.
