Chapter 1
"Can you turn around, please?" Zephrine opened her horse's saddlebag, pulling out a velvety soft dress.
"You've been doing this for the past two weeks, always telling me to turn around when you're changing. You've seen me naked, I think it's a little unfair that I don't get to see you." Xavier pouted, but obeyed.
"In my defense, we were being tortured." Zephrine slipped her corset on, contorting her arms behind her back to tighten and tie it. She slipped into her shoes, then turned Xavier back around.
"That didn't stop you from staring. Did you at least like what you saw?"
"I liked it very much." Zephrine's eyes went over every inch of Xavier's body in a matter of two seconds. "But you wouldn't like my body."
"Excuse me, I like it clothed, I think I'd like it even better unclothed." Xavier whispered into her ear.
"Solid effort. I'm going to give that one about a three."
"Out of five?"
"Ten. Out of ten."
"What more do you want from me?" Xavier faked an exasperated sigh.
"One of us needs to win the bet first." Zephrine poked his stomach, giving him a playful kiss. She still had no idea how to admit to the fact that she had lost.
"You're wearing green." Xavier stopped to admire Zephrine's dress.
"Observant as always, Xavier."
"Thanks."
"I was studying with Rhys, and apparently green is the color of friendship here. Hopefully I won't have to kill a king to get my dragon back if I'm wearing green."
"Yeah, I hope you don't have to kill either." Xavier smiled, his lips practically touching either ear.
"I think this is the biggest smile I've ever seen from you." Zephrine wrapped her arms around Xavier's neck.
"What do you mean, I'm always smiling when I'm around you. You're my moonstone."
"Moonstone?"
"They're my favorite gem. Have been ever since we met."
"Why's that?"
"They remind me of your eyes when you laugh. They just light up, and your eyebrows get really close together, almost like you're mad. And-"
Zephrine put her palms against her eyes. "No! Don't make me cry, don't make me cry! It'll take me forever to stop if I start."
"Hey, hey. Let me finish describing you, moonstone."
"No, no. We have to talk to Fulke, as much as I would love to stay here."
"Ooh, almost the right phrase." Xavier snapped his fingers.
"Oh yeah, and what's the right phrase?"
"Starts with 'I,' ends with 'you.'"
"I hate you?" Zephrine fought to keep her giggling in.
"That's the opposite emotion of what we're going for here."
"Is it?" Zephrine ran her hands through Xavier's hair.
"You're right, we should leave. If we start, we'll never stop." Xavier lifted Zephrine onto her horse. "And Zephrine, I don't want you to think I'm your king, I want you to think we're equals, because we are. You hold just as much power as I do."
"So does that mean I'm basically Queen?"
Xavier sighed, rolling his eyes through a grin. "Yes, you're basically Queen. And if Fulke asks, we are married, happily, I might add, and we are very, very, very much in love."
Zephrine smiled back at Xavier, trying to ignore the fact that the second part of his statement was true. At least for her, it was.
