Chapter 13

A/N: IM BACK BITCHES

"Can I see him? Rosario, I mean. I want to talk to him." Caius shrugged his siblings off, touched by their concern, but all he wanted was to hear the truth.

"Of course, we'll walk you down." Rhys took Caius's side, arms clearly ready to support him if he was too fatigued.

"No, no. Just me. I'll make it down a flight of stairs." Caius stood, leaving his siblings behind as he turned the corner to the dungeons.

Xavier was talking to the guards when Caius arrived. When he saw Caius approaching, he simply nodded and let him pass. Caius couldn't bring himself to look Xavier in the eye, so he just sighed in acknowledgment.

Rosario was sat on the floor, back against the wall, looking up at the ceiling. His eyes were red and puffy, but he almost looked relieved. "I didn't want you to find out that way, but that's just how life works, I guess."

"I guess so." Caius sat down, looping his arms through the bars of the cell.

"Why are you here? I thought you most of all would hate me." Rosario moved his head so he could see Caius.

"I don't understand what you did, or why, but I don't hate you, that's Rhys's job. That, or I guess it hasn't set in yet."

"I don't know what I was expecting when I told the king, to be honest. I mean, I wasn't holding him to throw a party, but death wasn't what I pictured." Rosario laughed wryly. "Oddly enough though, it's the first time I've felt hopeful in weeks."

His comment stung a little, but Caius shrugged it off. "Did you even like me? Were you genuine with us?"

"That seems to be the only thing I was genuine about. Is that what you want to hear? The truth? Well, there it is."

"Ro..."

"Just don't talk." Rosario finally moved, sliding forward until he was right in front of Caius. He reached through the bars, taking Caius's hand in his.

"We'll get you out of here." Caius promised, though not quite sure how he'd fulfill it. "I won't let this happen to you."

"You don't get it, do you?" Rosario shook his head, sighing deeply. "An axe to the head is quicker than wasting away. A lot less painful, too. Caius, I want to die. Please don't deny me that right."

"Well what about me? What am I supposed to do?"

"I almost got your sister killed! I can't live with that." Rosario's voice softened, and he fell back, staring at the ceiling. "Just leave, Caius. No use in trying to save me, you'll only make it harder on both of us."

Caius nodded, fully aware Rosario couldn't see him, and got to his feet. Without a word, without even looking back.
