~Two days later~
Your POV
"So what do you think of them?" PJ finishes taking a sip of his mint tea.
"Who are we talking about?" I ask, taking in another smell of brewing coffee and newly baked goods.
"Dan and Phil."
"Oh," I shrug. "Dan and I get along well. I think he's funny."
"What about Phil?"
Phil? I have no idea how I feel about Phil. Call me weird, but I felt special that other night. With his arms around me, holding me close, I felt as if we were the only two people in the world. I liked that. But I'm also confused. I barely know anything about him. And there must have been a reason I've never seen him... well, after the accident.
If we were as close as he said we were, why did he never visit me? Why did my mum never tell me about him?
It's now I realize that my mum never really told me anything of my past. Like, I know the doctors said she couldn't really tell me much, she was still allowed to tell me some things. Like where I lived before Brighton (PJ was the one to tell me I didn't live there my whole life), names of friends I used to have and the occasional fact about myself. Yet she never did. Whenever I asked about it, she would start talking about something else. Was she afraid of something? Was there something she doesn't want me to find out?
"Earth to Y/N."
I snap out of thought and look at PJ who looks back at me, concerned.
"Oh, yeah. Phil? He's cool," I say quickly and take a sip of my (drink of choice).
"So you don't... love him?" He smirks.
I choke on my drink.
"No, of course not. I hardly know him! I do, but I don't. Damn it," I snap, hitting the table with my fist. "Why of all the things that could've happened to me did I lose my memory? I couldn't just lose a leg or become a paraplegic or... die, I had to lose the one thing that's important to everyone!" My sudden outburst attracts unwanted attention and I find the whole coffee shop staring at me.
"Is everything okay here?" A worried waitress looks down at me.
"Everything's fine," PJ replies quietly. "Y/N, you need to calm down," he says as she walks away.
I fold my arms on the table and hide my face.
"It's all just so confusing. Phil makes me feel so special, y'know? Remember how I used to complain about wanting something and I didn't know what? It's gone now. Ever since I set eyes on Phil. And I don't know what it means. I want- no, need to know what it means. I'm trying to keep every feeling at bay because I don't know exactly who everyone was to me. What was Phil to me? Was he really just a friend? Or did something happened between us? We could've had a big fight. We may not have even been friends and he's just using my condition as an advantage."
PJ sighs in reply. Then, soft and calm, he says, "I wish I could tell you. I really do. And if I could, I would, even if the doctor said we're not supposed to. But I know just as little as you do. I've known both you and Phil for so long, but I have know idea what happened between you guys. I may have heard you and him mention each other every now and then, but you never really said anything."
"I just wish I knew why he feels so important to me."
PJ stands and moves over to me, diving into a tight hug. "I know you do, and so do I. Just please take things easy. I don't want you feeling useless for something you had no control over."
I smile softly and his kind words. "Thank you, Peej. I could never wish for a different best friend."
