FOUR
HERA SAT STARING AT her mug of green tea, planning a performance of a life time. She wasn't the one in the relationship that demanded. She went with whatever Zeus wanted her to, and now the table needed to turn. However, she was weak and needs Zeus's muscles to turn the tables because they're made of marble.
It was now 1AM and Zeus was still working in his office. This didn't bother Hera as much as it gave her time to get ready. The woman had applied a deep red colour to her lips and tied the silk ribbon to her gown across her waist. She played with her hair a little bit more before making her way down the hall. She had a mug of coffee in her hand, made to exactly Zeus's liking. What if he gets suspicious? What if he knows something is up? She shook the thoughts out of her head. Besides, it's Zeus. When has he ever said no to sex?
Her mind was giddy, there was no denying it. There was a rush of adrenaline and anxiety through her.
With her free hand she knocked twice on the closed office door.
"Come in." An extremely exhausted voice croaked from within the room. Hera opened the door to see her husband with his head in his hands. She placed the mug onto his desk and began to massage his shoulders. Which, ironically, made him stiffer.
"Come to bed." She spoke in a low voice, pausing the massage to wrap her arms around him, "you're overworking yourself." her lips skimming the surface of his jaw as she spoke. "I miss you."
"I have graphs to do, I need to finish before I can sleep." He stated firmly, though Hera could tell his voice was starting to quake. Her response was a mere humming noise before she began playing with Zeus's hair, her fingers then tracing his bone structure.
"Hera." Zeus snapped back to reality, he took her hand, "I have emails to write, I can't be distracted." He explained before feeling the material of the sleeve. "Are you wearing the silk gown?" He turned around to face her and took in her appearance. He couldn't help but let a boyish grin paint his face before quickly returning to his previous expression. He stood, towering over Hera, he wrapped his arms around her petite frame and kissed the top of her head. "Go to bed Hera." He smiled at her for the last time, before turning off the lamp and exiting the room. Leaving her in the dark.
Hera stood defeated in the dark of the office room for a moment. Shocked. Did Zeus just say no to sex? She let out a frustrated grunt and swung open the door and entered her bedroom, where Zeus was already getting into bed. He smiled at her and she gave a rather petty one back. She picked up her pillows and made her way to the door.
"You're really going to move rooms because I won't have sex with you?" Zeus laughed at her pettiness, "I thought you missed me?"
"That was before you rejected my needs." She huffed. And entered the spare room, where she spent the night.
-
Hospitals were always such a place of dreariness and the perfect example of "too sterile." The white walls drained the life out of the building and the outdated magazines in the waiting room seemed to add to the dysphoric atmosphere. Hera waited for an excessively long time to hear her name to be called before entering the patient room.
"So you think you might be pregnant?"
-
"Have a nice day Hera."
"You too." Hera greeted and left, she was just out of earshot when the doctor made a request.
"Could you get me the number of Hera's husband?"
Back at home, the bedroom seemed to have been turned inside out. The drawers were left open and the sheets were undone. Hera stared at the scene in confusion for a few moments.
"How were the girls?" Zeus asked from behind, startling her. "I hope you ate properly, I didn't see you this morning."
"Ah yes, they're all fine. What happened to the room?" Hera asked suspiciously, her eyes locked on one particular drawer.
"I couldn't find my planner." Zeus chuckled, Hera didn't find it amusing.
They stood in awkward silence for a moment before Zeus started to pick things up from the floor, "stay here tonight." He faced Hera. His expression was unreadable and his intentions unclear. As if he intended to confuse her. She was silent for a few minutes before Zeus poked her. "Normally people respond to those kind of things and avoid staring off into space."
"I'll stay."
-
Hera stayed. Her plan had been put into action and she seemed to be in the clear, however, there was a pressing weight against her chest and it wasn't Zeus' hands. Her face was buried in Zeus' chest and she repositioned herself so that she could see him. He was so tranquil when sleeping. It would be the last assumption to make that he's actually a chaotic business mogul.
She knew that he'd know that this child isn't his. She knew that Poseidon and himself have strikingly different features. She knew that he would freak out if he found out that this baby isn't his.
But what she didn't know, was that she found herself sobbing into her husbands chest. Perhaps it was the assumption that he was asleep that made it easier to let go. Maybe not, who's to say? Zeus opened one eye and looked down at his wife.
"Was I really that bad?"
