SIX

HERA WAS GETTING SICK of walking into barren overly modern buildings. She decided they had no personality, no class. The walls were always white, the floor was always laminated. The paintings were always just coloured in shapes with weird shading. They were all too symmetrical.

She sat in the pristine waiting room, also very modern, alongside a multitude types of people. On her left was a family who were very clearly not from there and on her right was a tired woman accompanied by a small boy in a wheelchair, she turned to the tired woman and smiled, "how long have you been waiting for?"

"Hours. I've lost count." She yawned, "I hate the system here."

"System?" Hera questioned before she was interrupted by a hurried intern,

"Mrs Olympus? Miss will see you now." Hera heard the woman sigh and saw the family give each other a look.

"I won't see her until she's attended to the others." Hera crossed her legs and sat up in her chair, giving a pointed look. The intern was took a few steps back.

"I'll ask - "
"No. You'll tell Miss I will not see her until she has seen everyone else. Do I make myself clear?" Hera cut her off and continued to glare before she turned to the direction of the family.

-

The sky had gone dark and Hera was still sat in the waiting room, granted it was winter and she had arrived at 4.30pm and it was currently 6.20pm. The sun had set long before this.

The intern had arrived once more, this time to once again call Hera.

As Hera climbed the transparent glass stairs, her stomach felt like it was in a knot. For two reasons: she didn't like heights and the fact that there was a lot weighing on this meeting.

she came to an open office, it looked more like a penthouse than an office, there was a tall book case surrounding a corner of the room where a small fireplace was set up, there was a frame of an owl on the mantelpiece and the entirety of the corner felt out of place.

Hera tried to walk in a straight of a line she could over to the lawyers desk, who was scribbling frantically on a piece of paper, trying to get her pen to work. "Miss?" Hera called for attention.

"Yes please, sit." She was rather stiff in her speech and it remained quite flat.  Her hair was tight bun which seemed to lift her face, her glasses were far down her nose.

"I'm here to talk about -"

"Yes I know, my assistant informed me before you came in." She interrupted, leaving Hera aback. "So the baby is Poseidon's?"

"Yes."

"Zeus' brother?"

"Yes."

"Who is your husband."

Hera glared at the lawyer in front of her, "yes."

"So you want my help in practically condoning adultery." Her eyes fixed on the computer which she was typing aggressively on.

"I didn't take you to be religious."

"Oh I'm not, I just have morals. Dear." She stopped typing to force a smile. "I'll help you, only because Athena asked me to. Give me a week and I'll have nearly everything sorted. You can go now."

Hera's eyes widened in surprise before she composed herself once more, "I'll see you in a week." She gave an awkward smile and left the room.

That was a unique experience for her, to say the least.

-

Hera arrived home to silence. Zeus was still not talking to her and refused to see her. Though this upset her greatly, there wasn't much she could do. She's acted in similar ways when Zeus had the habit of unfaithfulness when they were younger and she had even had a pool house built in the garden in case she was extremely angry, which ironically was where Zeus was currently staying.

However, she had other things to focus on. Artemis surprisingly wanted to catch up with her after months of no contact. She thought that once you become the centre of scandal, everyone wants their 5 seconds of fame. Or Hera was just being cynical. It was an awkward situation, she didn't know what to wear and usually Zeus had a good sense for these sorts of things however he was in another building. She didn't know whether to dress up or stay casual. Considering it was Artemis, it wouldn't really matter.

Several minutes later, Hera was setting up a tray with some snacks when Zeus decided to come into the kitchen through the back door.

"Isn't Artemis coming over today?" He asked, his tone stiff. Reaching for the jar of Nutella and a spoon.

"Yes." She replied, reciprocating his tone.

"And you decide to wear that?" He gestured to her outfit, with the spoon.

"What about it?" She looked down, Hera decided to go extremely casual with sweat pants and a jumper.

"Who are you trying to be?" Zeus tilted his head, "you haven't worn clothes like that since high school. Since - oh I see" His jaw stiffened. Hera's brows furrowed with confusion until the realisation hit her.

"Zeus, I didn't realise, it wasn't intentional I swear."

"Have fun with Artemis." He gave her a small smile and saluted her with the spoon.

Artemis arrived, already tipsy. She had wine in one hand and tequila in the other. "BITCH." She screamed, "do I have tea for you!" She giggled, clinking the bottles together at each syllable which urged Hera to quickly take them off her.

Hera laughed at her friends absolute state but shook her head, "I'm not drinking." She explained as she put the bottles into the fridge.

"Detox?"

"No."

"Sudden interest in religion...?"

"No."

"Uhhh liver problems?"

"No." Hera rolled her eyes, "don't strain yourself thinking about it. Would you like some coffee or tea or?"

"I'll make myself some tea, do you want some?" Artemis offered. Hera had a bad feeling about it but agreed anyway.

"I just need to get something from upstairs to show you, I'll be back in a minute." Hera left the room and Artemis waited till she got upstairs. She pulled out a liquor flask and tipped some into the mug.

"Maybe this'll loosen your tongue." She huffed before saltily boiling the kettle.
