The Palace

My rooms were marble like the throne room, and all shiny, it was beautiful and I loved it instantly. I had a huge bedroom with a bathroom and closet off from one side. My blankets were silk and there were millions of cloud-like pillows.

"What happens now? When do I become immortal?" I asked Artemis. She still seemed tired from hunting so she took a minute to answer.

"Soon. Once we find out what you'll be goddess of, you become immortal. Zeus might choose to marry you off first though. Probably to a minor god." I'd have to get married? I sure hope not, it wouldn't be worth it.

"Will I just be a minor goddess?"

"Yes. Unless you're very unusual. In a good way of course. But I have no idea what my father has planned for you." I nodded and turned back to my room.

"Do you have a library?" I said turning back to them. Artemis smiled. I'll take that as a complete yes.

"Yes we do. I have to go hunting soon. So Apollo will show you. Won't you Apollo?" He nodded but didn't look excited.

"Thank you." I told him. He nodded.

The library was a huge dome, had large windows that streched to the ceiling, and window seats so the sun could shine on whoever sat there.

The shelves were lined with all kinds of books. Shelves and shelves of them streching as high as the windows. Oh, there was so many glorious books! There were ladders to get the harder to reach ones and balconies in between to get the ones that were on shelves that reached the high ceiling. It was heaven on... Well, heaven on heaven.

I found a book on one of the topmost shelves on one of the balconies. Then, I wanted to sit on one of the window seats where the sun could shine and I would feel the warmth of the evening sun. But a question tugged at the back of my brain. I turned to Apollo who was scanning the bookshelves doing his best not to interact with me. I forced myself to ask,

"Why do you hate newcomers?" He turned, shocked, as if he thought I wouldn't think of even asking this question. I started to regret me ever asking.

"Because," He took a deep breath, "Because, the last one I believed in failed." He answered me! What was going on here? And who was the 'last one' as he put it?

"Who was it?" No beating around the bush now.

"Nemesis, the goddess of balance, mostly revenge though. I thought she'd be wonderful and do something useful but she now tears people down when they have good luck." He was leaning against the bookcase with one hand and staring at the floor. Oh. I guess I hit a nerve there.

"Oh, could I ask you one more thing?" He nodded but did not move from his position. I decided to ask this nicely, since he was already uncomfortable.

"If I end up not being a failure, would you, will you, believe in me?" He looked up, clear surprise in his eyes. Believe me buddy, I'm surprised I asked that to.

"Of course." Then he smiled and began to scan the shelves again. Wow, does he have mood swings or something?

I stole a glance at him in the sunlight. His blonde hair was glowing and his sky blue eyes now seemed happy. I had broken the ice. He cared about me. But somehow seeing him there I felt myself blushing. What was wrong with me?

I began to read, I read until Aphrodite came in. I got up and curtsied then sat down again to read my book.

     "Apollo." He turned,

     "Yes?"  He replied.

"Were starting once Artemis comes back."

"Starting what?" I asked looking up from my book. Apollo turned back to the books and Aphrodite began to explain.

"Zeus will decide what you will be goddess of. Then you will become immortal. Its actually more simple than it seems." I nodded. That actually seemed pretty simple.

     "So... How long?" She sighed.

"A few hours. Just be ready."

"Of course Lady Aphrodite." I got up again and curtsied. Aphrodite left in a sweep of colorful but beautiful fabric. I sat back down.

"Why do you hate the fact I'm going to be immortal?" Apollo turned to me again. But his eyes were full of worry. I hoped I wasn't blushing because somehow his eyes seemed very, intense. This look would haunt me for a long time.

"Most people change when they become immortal. I don't want you to. My sister likes you, so I have to like you." I nodded. Yeah, that's it. Blame it on the sister.

"But why are you so informal? Everyone but maybe your sister is big on formal." It was true, and a little sickening.

"Artemis and I are young gods. When your born full god you actually age to a certain point. We are teenagers compared to some."

"Oh, just 1,000's of years old teenagers." He laughed and I might add, which was a pleasant sound to my ears.

"Exactly." I smiled shyly at him. He was looking at me in that intense way again, but there was a smile in his eyes. I went back to my book, hoping to hide my blush.
