Red Strings
You see them everywhere you go, little red strings attached from person to person. Sometimes they are attached to the two people walking together, sometimes you can see the string stretching, but no end to it in sight.
Its beautiful really. Seeing these people with their soulmates, or knowing that their soulmate is out there waiting for them. Are they going home to see the person attached to the other part of the string?
You like to imagine that maybe the lady at the grocery store is getting what she needs to make dinner for her soulmate. Maybe it's their anniversary and she's picking up that bottle of wine to celebrate. Maybe the older man at the pharmacy is getting the medicine his wife needs, or the young man buying condoms is nervous about the first time with his soulmate.
You envy them. Your red string isn't stretched out like everyone else's. It extends towards the sky. Your soulmate has already died. You have to walk around every day knowing you will never get to meet them. Never get to marry them, kiss them, spend the rest of your life with them. You'll never learn what makes them giggle, or what their voice sounds like when they first wake up in the morning. Never spend a leisurely Sunday morning together. Never celebrate 50 years together. Never fall asleep in their arms listening to their heartbeat.
Which is why you know no one will fault you for your decision. Everyone will understand why you do what you plan on doing. You have nothing left for you, no one to spend your life with. You've already left the note for your friends and family, letting them know why you did what you're about to do. Standing on the side of the bridge you look up, blowing a kiss skyward before taking the last step you'll ever take.
