I use the app Procreate and a lot of this involves using a certain brush, but it may still be useful for others of you because you may have similar ones.

Step One: I usually do this once I have the line art done and the base color down, but I decided to do it on a white background so you can see if better. I took the brush pen at 12% opacity in black and just drew multiple lines in the direction I wanted the fur to point to. If you are going to have a darker colored animal, it's best to bump up the opacity a bit. You can play around to see what works best.

Step Two: I added color to the fur. As stated before, this step can be interchanged with step one. I did blend the sides out a bit because it looked very odd before doing so.

Step Three: The final step involves adding lighting where the shadows of the fur are absent. I used the same brush pen at 8% opacity and drew lines within the blank areas. Don't go overboard with this, however, as it will result in a similar appearance to the picture above but with lighter fur.
