-Chapter Five-
My heart pounded beating harder as the man got the water to his shoulders shouting and shouting this time in English. "Give me back the dope! I swear I will shoot you!", he yelled. Another voice bellowed at him as another officer noticed going to the bank kneeling under cover.
"Get back on your side now!", yelled the officer.
Pissed the man jerked his gun cussing at the other officer.
"Sir! Get back on your side or I will be forced to shoot you!", he snapped.
The didn't care, he wasn't worried. He seemed to have nothing to fear. He knew we were tied up in a bind. Both of us debating about what to do. The Rio Grand was neutral territory. We couldn't apprehend anyone in the water. But this man had a gun. He was angry. Determined. And set on where I was.
Then the sound of the mega phone came along with the humming of a boat, "Sir! Get back on your side now! We will shoot!", warned another.
Back up came just in time. I didn't relax though my eyes were locked on the man who was glaring in my direction. I didn't want to shoot. I did not want to shoot him. Turn around turn around! My heart pounded and I raised my gun further taking aim. Damnit!
The man in the water eyed the boat which was coming closer from up river. He cursed shouting, "You better watch your fucking back!", he yelled and turned beginning to make his trek back towards the other side.
I narrowed my eyes. I clenched the pistol in my hand. If I shot everything the bullet hit was mine. The air the water, the man. All of it. I waited tensely as he got out and shouted again.
"You better watch your fucking back! I'll be watching you!", he shouted.
I backed up slowly till I was on the road and felt the luggage of dope against my ankle and tucked away my gun. I could barely just see the man through the brush. The other officer came out. He looked at me.
"You alright?", he asked. He was older, mid forties.
I nodded, "Yeah, you?", I asked.
"Fucking asshole", he said looking back out at the water. Clearly former military. He just seemed like the type of guy.
"Yup", I replied following his gaze.
Another shout came, "I'll be watching you! You bitch!", yelled the voice.
"Shut your trap!", yelled the male officer cupping his hands over his mouth for volume.
The man kept shouting it though ignoring. "That bastard doesn't know what's good for him!", hissed the officer hand flying to his pistol.
"Hey", I said.
He looked at me through his sunglasses, "It's alright, there's no need for a shoot out", I said.
"He has no right to spill out threats like that against you", said the officer glaring.
"It's not the first time", I said looking over the man was still there pacing about.
I sighed, "I'm going to get this back to the car", I said picking up on load.
"Here, I got it", said the man taking the other easily.
"Thank you", I said.
"Not a problem, now where's your car?", he asked.
"Up this way, not far", I said motioning for him to follow.
"So what's your name?", I asked as we made our way up the sloped path.
"Roger, Roger Hable", he replied.
"Just moved down?", I asked.
He grunted, "Yeah, three weeks ago, how'd you know?", he asked.
"Lucky guess. I would have been embarrassed if you had said no", I replied.
"Ha! I wouldn't have cared. What's your name?", he asked.
"Katherine, Katherine Klein", I said opening the back trunk and tossed in the dope. Roger did the same dusting his hands together. "Everyone calls me Kathy though", I replied.
"Kathy, pleasure", he said extending his hand. I took it giving a firm shake. At least I tried, he had the better grip and strength, but I did my best to match it.
He smiled, "Nice to know another person out here", said Rogers.
"Likewise", I replied.
"You had a nice catch", said Roger gesturing to the dope.
I crossed my arms chewing, "More like luck! It's definitely not something that happens everyday", I laughed.
"No, but you did good", he said.
"You too Roger, I appreciate you sticking up for me out there, really", I said.
"All part of the job, you'd do the same for me, as any of the others out here", he said.
His radio went off, "Roger, where the you?", asked a voice.
"I'm at the parking lot, I'll be down in a second, just helped load up dope", he replied. He sighed, "Well, I better get back down there before he blows a fuse. It's a short one", he said.
I laughed, "All for good reason, nice meeting you Roger", I said waving as he walked off.
He turned pointing, "Seriously, if that guy follows you around you let me or somebody else know, okay?", he called.
I nodded, "Will do, don't worry", I said closing the back door of the trunk.
"Alright, seriously!", he snapped again.
"Roger!", shouted a voice. Roger jumped darting down waving to get to his partner.
I shook my head smiling. I opened the car door to step inside but I turned. Something churned in my gut as I stared the man in the grey shirt was still pacing around and I could see him from where I was standing. I got in and shut the door driving off to keep going on the route.
