-Chapter Sixteen-

After arguing over which chives to buy I made sure to stay in front of the man when we made it to the checkout register. The teen boy looked at us. He was a bit glum looking. Like he didn't want to be here.

"Hi, did you find everything you needed?", asked the boy.

Chris was removing this from the cart onto the scanning strip and spoke, "No, we didn't get the right chives", he said.

"They are in ile two if you want to go grab them", said the boy. He was probably thinking about having to wait for us which wasn't too great for however, his day was going.

I shook my head smiling, "No, no, ignore him. We're all good", I assured.

He shrugged managing a small smile. It wasn't much but he couldn't help but feel better. He began to scan and bag things along with help from another assistant who put all the groceries back into the cart. The second was sweating from having collected carts outside in the heat all day.

"Hot huh?", I asked politely starting conversation.

The man smiled shaking his head, "Yeah, phew! And it's only supposed to get hotter as summer goes along", he replied.

He looked up making eye contact, "I don't know if I want Texas rainy season, or Texas dry season. When it rains it floods, and when it doesn't the bottom of my shoes melt! This state is as moody as ever", he sighed.

"But I am not moving back to Detroit! Not in a million years! My two exes are there and man I don't want to be anywhere around them", warned the man.

Well that was a very open statement right there, I thought. I managed a small smiled. "I've never been to Detroit, a well known city", I said.

"Don't go! It ain't for folks down here! Heck no! If you want to go to a good city, go to Boston. That's the place to go", said the man.

"Your total comes out to be one hundred and sixty two", said the boy.

"I got it", said Chris.

"Hey! No!", I snapped already having my card out.

I swiped it as Chris had his fingers on his. I signed swiftly and was asked, "Receipt?". I responded and shook my head, "No, no thank you", I replied. I pushed the cart away out to where the others were gathered and began to take bags out.

Chris took his share too, "Chris I'm fine, it's fifteen minute walk. You really don't have to!", I objected.

He smiled, "And miss the chance to see you again? Come on Klein, I drove all the way here because Louisa said you were in distress", he said.

"But I wasn't! She set you up!", I said.

He smiled, "I have to say, for a set up, it's a pretty damn good one that I can live happily with", said Chris.

"Now your flirting", I said.

He laughed opening the door to his Ford pickup truck. His white shirt was a bit dirty and his car looked like it had been down a dusty road or two. He waved me over. I didn't have much of a choice other than to get in since he had already put the other goodies inside.

It was a nice truck for being an older navy blue model. It ran smoothly for stick shift. Other than the potholes that couldn't be avoided. I looked around leaning back comfortably.

"So, this is your day off too?", asked Chris.

"Yup, Tuesdays and Saturdays, I", I replied.

He smiled, "I have the weekends off", he said.

"Sundays for church?", I asked.

He shook his head, "Nah....I'm not much of a guy who listens to preaches. I haven't read the bible either", he said nervously.

I laughed, "You sound worried, like a kid who wants to impress!", I replied.

"Can you blame me? I'm sitting next to the girl who I've been working with for three years and I only now finally managed to ask her out", said Chris.

I raised my eyebrows. Three years? Chris tilted his head from side to side, "Yeah, I've liked you for a good three years now.....it's true", he said.

"Would it be much to say I tried to find your twitter account because I liked you too....", I said quietly after a slight pause. I had confessed.

Chris smiled, "I thought only teenagers did that", he said turning the wheel.

I pursed my lips together.

"Have you had lunch?", he asked then.

"Hm? Lunch?", I asked.

He chuckled, "I take that as a no", he said turning off.

"Hey! Wrong way!", I said seeing that we had passed the street.

"I know, I know, relax Klein. We'll get there. You haven't had lunch yet, and lucky for you I haven't had lunch either", he said.

I sighed smiling. "Where are we going?", I asked.

"You'll see, you'll see", he said.

"Come on tell me", I pressed.

He broke, "Ever heard of the Red Barn?", he asked.

I shook my head, "Nope", I replied.

"Really? Oh! You're in for a treat! Best pulled pork sandwiches along the Rio Grande. You've never been there? You've lived here for how long?", he asked.

"Four years, Louisa does all the cooking. She refuses to go out to eat unless it's a birthday or family visits", I replied.

Chris chuckled, "Then it's about time you get to see this place", he said.
