-Chapter Twenty Five-

Cassidy and Louisa drove home to find that their home was being searched. It was to be expected. Louisa and Cassidy had consented to it. They had agreed to it. Anything to help. They had nothing to hide. They didn't know what it would bring but it was a chance.

Louisa swallowed as she pulled up and an officer turned to her.

"Do you need us to come back later?", asked Louisa.

The female FBI officer shook her head no, she looked grim and frustrated. There was nothing here. Clean as a whistle. Nothing popped out towards her. It seemed normal. There was nothing. They had already checked the phone records. No threats from there. Louisa and Cassidy had already been questioned and the agent knew asking them a third time or fourth time actually wouldn't help. It would just be pestering.

The agent sighed, "We are packing up...we didn't find anything....", her voice trailed off. That could be taken the wrong way in some cases.

"Your friend was a good cop", she said quietly and crossed her arms turning back to watch the continuation of everything getting loaded and cleaned up.

Cassidy covered her mouth tears brimming her eyes. She and Louisa had just been killing time. The chief said that they should take the day off. After questioning them even Louisa was having the hardest time staying collected. Cassidy wasn't cut out for it.

She was breaking down in the car. Louisa could hear her, "Alright....we'll come back later...if your done before we get back you can leave the key's in the flower pot at the front", said Louisa.

"Yes ma'am", replied the FBI officer.

Louisa got back into the car tears brimming her eyes. She put on her shades to hide the fact that she herself was about to cry. She didn't want Cassidy to know. In silence she pulled out of the driveway heading back into town. Louisa and Cassidy didn't have very many actual friends here in Laredo. They were a quiet reserved and private couple. Rogers wife and other officers had offered them to stay with their families. But Louisa declined.

She didn't want to burden them. She didn't want to intrude on anyone else's life. Nor take advantage of it.

She swallowed looking back towards Cassidy who had claimed her space in the back three seats of the van. Normally she sat up front. Nevermind she always sat up front next to Louisa when it was just them in the car.

"Are you hungry?", asked Louisa.

Cassidy was silent. She just stared at her hands.

"Where do you want to go eat Cassidy? Any suggestions?", asked Louisa.

Cassidy was silently thinking. All she could wonder about was how one of her two best friends was gone. Just gone. Somewhere across that river. That single quarter mile stretch of brown rapid water. Somewhere in that city, that town, in that other country. She worried.

"Can we call him?", asked Cassidy quietly.

"Who?", asked Louisa confused by the word him.

"Chad....can we call him? See if he's gotten any farther?", asked Cassidy.

Louisa shook her head, "I don't know Cassidy....he's working to try and find her", said Louisa.

"Please? Maybe he's found her...maybe they just haven't told us yet", said Cassidy.

Louisa sighed, Cassidy just played with her ring on her finger. Louisa had actually proposed that prior evening. She was turning it and looking at it as if to search for comfort in it. Louisa had said that Klein had picked it out.

Louisa pulled out her phone and dialed putting it on speaker and set down the phone. It rung. Over and over again. Louisa waited for several long and dragging moments.

"Yeah, hello this is Chris Chad", said Chris.

"Chad...it's Louisa and Cassidy", said Louisa identifying herself.

"I know", said Chris simply. He sounded frustrated.

"We just....we wanted to ask if anything new has come up....anything to help--",

"Have you found her?!", asked Cassidy bluntly.

Chris was silent. Louisa heard him swallow in the pause, "No....no we haven't", said Chris.

Cassidy broke crying and Chris could hear this. Louisa sniffed, "Alright, we'll try our best from here", said Louisa.

Chris swallowed hearing the sobbing. "Louisa do you need a place to stay?", he asked.

"No, no, the investigators are cleaning up...we...we are...", Louisa swallowed back tears and finished, "We are going to get something to eat", said Louisa.

"Alright, but if you need a place to stay my address is 443 Hector Street, there's a key under the front door mat....if you need it. I'll keep you both posted as best I can. I have to go", said Chris.

Louisa sniffed nodding, "Sí, sí, no deje que le mantenemos" said Louisa. (Yes, yes, don't let us keep you)

"Alright, see you", said Chris quietly. He hesitated, but hung up and Louisa's ears filled with the familiar beeping and dulled sound of a dead line.

Cassidy was sobbing tears streaming down her face. She held her forehead, "Oh my god....oh my god....", she whispered her lips trembling Cassidy stared out the window trying not to cry but it wasn't any use.

"Cassidy", said Louisa.

"Oh my god", Cassidy repeated.

"Cassidy", said Louisa again trying to get her attention.

She wasn't listening. "Oh my god....I should've...I should've taken the night shift with her on Mondays....I should've....I should've accepted when it was proposed! I should have taken the shift that day too when they organized my monthly schedule!", whimpered Cassidy.

"She could be hurt....she could be scared......she could be....she could be...---!!!",

Cassidy jolted as Louisa hit the brakes spinning around and pointed her finger at Cassidy, "NO! NO! You do not think like that! She is not dead! NO! Klein is not dead! You dare think like that Cassidy! How could you?! You should be ashamed! If there's anyone who can make it out alive it's Klein! She's not dead and she will not die!", yelled Louisa.

Cassidy sobbed crying. "But she's in Mexico! She's in Nuevo Laredo! The zetas no matter how you see it have control of Nuevo Laredo! She doesn't have a.....I just....I'm scared for her! Aren't you!?", cried Cassidy.

Louisa swallowed falling silent.

Her companion was right. Cassidy was right. She was scared for her other house mate and dear friend.

Louisa managed to turn around not looking at Cassidy and began to start driving forward slowly back onto the road. She looked back through the rearview mirror. Back towards Cassidy.

"I am scared for her. But she needs us to be strong. You need to be strong for her Cassidy. We need to be strong for her....for when she gets back. It won't be easy for her when she get's back. We have to be there for her when they bring her back....".

Louisa reached back squeezing Cassidy's hand. Cassidy squeezed back, "She was the only one who supported us so we have to support her too", said Louisa.

Cassidy nodded sniffing, her eyes all puffy and filled with water. "It's just....hard....I miss her....I'm....I'm....", Cassidy couldn't find the words for the sentence.

"She'll come back Cassidy. They'll bring her back", said Louisa quietly.

Cassidy nodded and stared out the window letting go. She just stared out and watched the mailboxes and houses pass by. Some of the neighbors had harbored illegal immigrants and were sympathetic. Cassidy had been in some of their homes by force before....

Would they really be willing to take this risk if....stuff like this kept happening?

Cassidy knew some would....but sometimes it just didn't really help anyone. It confused law enforcement and caused unrequired tensions that could have been avoided. Cassidy could understand though. The majority who came over here sought to improve their life. To achieve something more than they had grown up with.

But.....there were rules for a reason. And yes following rules is easier to do. So why do they break the rules?

.....because of desperation.
