-Chapter Twenty Two-
The next morning the entire area was filled with officers and agents. There were scuba divers searching for anything under water. Two boats were hovering over the water searching the shore line. But they had to be careful not to get too close to the other side. People sometimes were desperate enough to try and hitch a ride or plead to be taken across. After last night's gun war though. It put people more on edge.
Chris and Rogers were still out there at eight in the morning looking at the edge and keeping busy trying to be of help. Their statements had already been taken. Now they were trying to look for anything. Anything. The dogs were out trying to catch trails but those who did always lost it to the water. If only they could go onto the other side.
Why did it take so long to get permission? Chris was on edge. He was worried. He was frightened.
"Hey! You two!", called a voice.
An investigative agent waved both Chris and Rogers over. She was squatting down at the tire looking at it. She seemed to be trying to pull something out. Her face was tight and she gave a heavy tug. Chris and Rogers heard the rubber pull and tear a bit.
The woman looked at the small wire in her hands. Barbed wire. It was small.
"Shit", she muttered under her breath.
Rogers grunted he also knew what this meant. There was no way it could have been seen. And if it had been, it would have been confused as a stick.
The woman stood bagging and tagging, "Whoever did this, thought this one through", she said handing it to Chris.
Chris looked at the tiny thing in the clear bag. He turned it over looking at the thing. The barbed wires looked like they could pop a tire.
"Thought this through?", asked Chris not wanting to believe it.
The investigator nodded and pointed down the road speaking, "This road leads to a dead end. This was premeditated. Whether the officer was just there at the time or it was intended. It doesn't matter. This", said the investigator pointing.
"Was likely placed while the officer was way down the road. Since it ends there was no choice but to turn around. As much as I hate to say it but this guy knew what he was doing", grumbled the woman.
"Chad! Rogers!", called a voice. It was another fellow officer.
"Chief needs to see you both in his office back at the station", said the man.
Chris swallowed handing back the bag, "Thanks", was all he said and then went to the car with no choice but to leave.
As Rogers drove and they made up back to the actual road passed the gauntly yellow crime scene tape. There were already people gathered around staring. News reporters were there already getting footage and asking for the inside scoop. But no one knew yet what was going on. Clearly the information hadn't been released yet. Then again the other investigators knew too little to explain what happened either.
Rogers and Chris knew. A kidnapping. That's what happened. But they couldn't tell anyone yet without consent or they'd get screwed over by their department chief. Rogers glanced over at the amount of people staring trying to get a sense of what was going on and happening. He drove slowly up the hill and turned the wheel.
"Hey look out!", yelled Chris as a kid ran out into the way.
Rogers hit the brakes even though he was only going ten miles an hour Rogers honked infuriated and the small child fell back frightened. Chris got out going towards the small child and picked him up walking him back to the crowd already able to spot the mother who was frantically looking around and calling. She had two others with her.
"Oh! Logan! I told you not to leave!", hissed the woman worried.
Chris returned the child to her arms, "Ma'am take your children home. This isn't the place for them", said Chris.
"What is going on officer? What are all these people doing here?", asked the woman frightened and she stepped towards him aggressively wanting an answer. Chris raised his hand. He wanted his space getting uncomfortable with her confrontation.
"Ma'am we are working on it. For now the best thing for you to do is to take your children home", said Chris.
"What is happening? What is wrong-", "Ma'am we aren't entirely-", Chris was interrupted when reports noticed him and gathered.
"Sir! Sir! If we could take a moment of your time!", called one.
"What's happened?",
"Was someone murdered?",
"Was it an immigrant?"
"Was there a US citizen involved?",
The questions were barreled at Chris as they wanted his attention, "No comment", was all he said turning. But the reporters kept following a few reached for him which made him deliberately feel threatened. He shook storming away back into the car slamming the door shut.
"I hate reporters", mumbled Rogers.
"Tell me about it. They can't wait", huffed Chris.
It had wasted valuable amounts of time. But no Chris had to get a child back to his mother and deal with reporters. It just got in the way.
"I mean who brings their kid to a crime scene!?", raged Chris kicking the dash board.
He was frustrated. Rightfully so. The press had their freedom. But some just glorified everything and didn't realize that these things take time. Precious time. And then many times it was twisted around against the police forces as they were pressured and criticized for their actions. While they reported the news with so few bounds other than their own personal rights and morales that drove them, officers were bound by so many more limitations and rules of legal actions and risked their lives to let people do what they wished to do as best they could.
But all it really seemed to do now was incite conflict and opinions as people took sides and criticize one another. Chris knew here reporting was dangerous and some received death threats for following stories on the drug cartel and immigration. Others though just wanted the inside scoop on everything. So it seemed at least in several ways.
Chris and Rogers made it to the station where everyone was still working. Some took glances as they got ready for their morning shifts. Immigrants would still be trying to cross. Especially at this time when the border patrol was a bit unorganized and unprepared.
Chris saw the chief motion for them to come to his office. He was on the phone as both gentlemen entered. Rogers shut the door behind him.
"Yes....yes I will see you then", said the chief he slapped down the phone agitated.
"Who was that?", asked Chris.
The chief looked at Chris, "I just got off the with Eric Martinez. Head investigator for the Mexican Federal Police department in Nuevo Laredo.
"And?", asked Chris wanting more.
"He's agreed to help us", said the chief.
"Agreed? You make it sound like you had to convince him", said Rogers.
"Politics is not my favorite part of this job, but he agreed to help us on his terms", said the chief.
"His terms!? Do you know their reputation!?", asked Chris crossing his arms.
"I don't like it either! But this is the best shot we've got! Now, I called you both here because you saw what happened, meaning you have the best intel to give. Roger you are not going with Chris I'm reassigning you to-"
"No, no, heck no! I am going!", snapped Rogers.
"No! You aren't experienced enough yet and I'm not-"
"With all due respect sir I believe I've earned my fair share of experience", said Rogers annoyed at this disrespect he was getting.
"Rogers, I know, but it's not happening and that's final, am I understood?", asked the chief.
Rogers glared, "Am I understood?", asked the chief again in a harder tone.
Rogers glared, "Yes sir", he said.
"Good, now you, get your things. Mr. Martinez will meet you at the station", said the chief. Chris nodded.
"But Chris, leave that uniform here. Just bring your badge and whatever else you need. But that attire stays here. We'll stay in touch", warned the chief.
Chris nodded. If he went around in a border patrol uniform the chances of him getting shot in Nuevo Laredo were even higher with the gangs and zettas wandering around in plain daylight.
As Chris exited and began to pack his backpack up from the things on his desk he heard a cry.
"Where is she!? Where is Klein!?", yelled a voice.
It was Cassidy. Cassidy immediately spotted Chris. She rushed over grabbing his shoulders. Her eyes wide and watering tears streaming down her red face from shock and crying.
"Where is she!? Where is Klein!?", repeated Cassidy over and over again to Chris waiting for an answer.
Chris clenched his teeth and whispered, "We don't know....", he managed.
Cassidy broke down sitting back into his chair sobbing. She was dressed for work. Louisa came over holding her just as shaken. She looked up at Chris.
"Tell me it's not Klein....tell me it wasn't Klein", she whispered.
"I can't", said Chris.
Louisa stood swallowing. She knew he was packing to leave. She could tell.
"You go get that bastard and you bring Klein back, you hear?", she asked.
Chris nodded, "Yes Ma'am", he replied.
