Chapter 1

The sky was clear, very few clouds were seen.

Twigs and leaves crunched as someone walked, hands trailing the trees that they pass by. The leaves on the branches rustled as the wind started to pick up, the figure humming as he looked up. Another person was sitting on a branch in front of him, staring directly at him. Both were silent, until the one on the branch started speaking.

"So, this is where you go when you have free time?" She tilted her head, sending a questioning glance at him then to the tree he was going to.

The first person sighed, ignoring the other. He continued walking to his obvious destination, a slightly glowing tree a few feet away from them that was bigger than the already-towering trees around the area. The figure on the branch dropped down, following her friend.

"...You know I always go here," the male said after a moment of silence, "but I guess I can see why you're questioning me."

The female shrugged and stood beside him, in front of the glowing tree. The tree had crystals hanging from it, pure white flowers blooming at the top. The bark, glowing a teal color, had shiny gems of all colors protruding from it, reflecting the light and casting a rainbow-looking color on all surfaces it could land on.

The two stared at the tree for a few seconds, the wind seeming to caress their faces like a mother would to a child. The female's hair, dyed a galaxy color, whipped around in the wind. She turned to the male, poking the skin that his mask didn't cover, which was basically his face's lower half. He didn't react at first, but when she started to repeatedly poke him his irritation showed. He swatted away her hand and she started laughing, messing with him more. Eventually he had to chase her around for revenge, another figure looking at them from atop the tree.

Amber yawned.

Class was boring, she could barely keep her eyes open. The lesson was about using weapons effectively or something, she forgot already. She already knew a lot of the topics discussed, yet she was still stuck in a room full of desks and people who look like they either want to go back to their rooms or mutilate a monster. You can never really tell.

"-and that concludes today's lesson." That woke her up a little, but it was the sudden ring of the school's bell to signal that it was time for lunch that really woke her up. Everyone sighed in relief and some people already bolted out of the room. Amber packed up her things before she ran out with the others, whooping as she went down flights of stairs straight to the dining hall of the school.

She unknowingly passed by Lynn, who yelled at her to wait as she tried to catch up.

The two ran into the already-loud hall screaming and bickering, smiles on their faces as they shoved each other playfully. They continued until they reached the table where they usually sat, their other friends already chatting and greeting the two as they sat together.

"So," the guy that ran with Amber yesterday started, she vaguely remembers his name being Valen or something, "how were your classes? History was interesting since Ms. Orvix decided to take us into the Burrows." He started tapping his fingers on the table with a grin on his face as everyone looked at him in awe.

"The actual Burrows?" Lynn slammed her hands onto the table and stood up from her seat, leaning over the table to look at Valen in the eyes.

The Burrows. People say that those were holes dug by the monsters that The Divines and their recruits were being trained to kill, some stories even say that they emerged during or after the great tragedies that happened years ago. Speculations erupted after that; were they the ones that caused the calamities or was that something else? Amber shuddered. The memory still seemed fresh in her mind.

Valen nodded.

The group descended into chaos, immediately asking him what it was like and why his class was brought there. Amber asked if the holes were huge, he replied saying that some were as big as a house.

Good God, she thought, now I want to see what kind of monster made that.

Too soon the bell rung. They bid each other goodbye and went to their classrooms. Amber had to hurry since she was on the third floor, but she was lucky enough not to be on the fifth like Valen. She wondered how he ever went up and down those stairs so quickly and with most of his energy remaining.

Just like Daph, Amber would always think. Her eyes darkened and she quickened her pace, her body moving automatically while her mind went into overdrive.

I promise I'll make you happy, just wait for a little longer.
