Chapter 11

Hayden came to an undesired halt as she turned around to face the wolves. She knew that she couldn't take them all at once but her legs had given up on her.
The pack mates let out a low growl, drool hanging from their mouths. She took a step back out of reflex, as her brain tried to determine a way out of there.
Her thoughts were racing, running from one way to get out to another. It was as though she was stuck in a trance, as she tried to focus on more than one thing at the same time. Her heart almost stopped beating when she felt a paw on hers. She jerked her head to the right, looking into the grey-blue eyes of the wolf in front of her.
She snapped out of her reverie almost immediately, preparing herself to fight. Letting her canines out, bringing them to the neck of the wolf.
How convenient, she thought, for she knew that the other wolves wouldn't ambush her if she has one of them under her mercy. All that she had to do was injure her enough for the pack to stay behind as she fled.
Keep her around, she could be useful, the voice inside of her advised.
Even if 'she' could be useful, she's my only way out of this mess, Hayden replied, piercing her teeth onto her neck, causing her to whimper in pain. Her suspending her escape for a few minutes turned to her favor, as her legs regained strength again. Using the injury as an opportunity, she leaped from the ground, running away as fast as possible.
Her body is filled with adrenaline, but she felt something she never did before. She was filled with thrill, the thrill that she got off of hearing the wolf whimper.
She turned her back to see not a single wolf behind her. She could feel her mouth playing into a smile, if a wolf could smile of course.
She hid behind a luscious heap of grass, trying to force herself to de-transform. She didn't know how it was to be done, because every single time she transformed early, it was un-intentional.
Wait it out love, you're not in control of anything, the voice told her. Every time she heard someone mentioned that she wasn't in control, anger rose in her. She punched her paw into the soil, her mind sighing from disappointment.
I guess we play the waiting game.

Isla gritted her teeth in pain, stroking her neck with her fingers. Her wrath rose until her chest as she took a deep breath in to keep herself under control. She heard footsteps approach her. She lifted her head and saw a medic towering over her.
"Move your hand." she said, displeased. Isla obeyed, moving her palm from her neck as the medic inspected it.
"Why did you do that?" the medic asked, annoyed.
"Do what?" Isla asked.
"She was outnumbered. You ran towards her, knowing she was stronger." the medic said.
"She did something to Cameron and I wanted her to pay." Isla said. In her head, she was slapping herself for her blatant lies. Claiming that she cared about Cameron drove her crazy.
"You were being impulsive." the medic noted, dabbing wet cotton on her wounds.
"What are you going on?" Isla asked.
"You're never impulsive. Whatever you're doing, it's not going to go unnoticed." she replied.
"You can't expect me to be normal when Cameron is-" she began, trying not to jump to conclusions.
"You seem to be normal now." she said, wrapping a bandage around her neck to keep the cotton in place.
"If you're done, I have places to go." Isla said, getting up from the infirmary bed she was seated on.
"We need a new heir. Cameron didn't survive." the medic said, giving Isla a nod, walking away to dispose of the blood-filled cotton swabs.
It was worth it at least, she thought, not able to suppress the smile that crept up on her face.
I'm the only one who can play the role of the alpha, she thought, her eyes burning with determination.
She grabbed her phone from her jeans pocket to dial a number. She waited for the other side to answer her call.
"Hello?" the respondent said.
"It's me, Isla." she said.
"What is it?" the respondent asked with curiosity.
"I need a favor from you." she said.
"As long as you don't bring Cameron around this time, I might be willing to help." she said.
"He's dead, so that won't be a problem." Isla replied
"Alright. Tell me what you want." she replied.
"I want you to do to me what you did for Hayden." Isla said.
"What do I get in return?" she asked, eager to listen to Isla's offer.
"What did Hayden offer to you?" Isla asked, hoping to do the same.
"I don't leak previous deals." Valerie responded, taking pleasure in making things hard for her.
"What do you want?" Isla asked.
"You name something and I'll think about it." Valerie said.
"Money?" Isla offered.
"Too basic, name something else." Valerie said.
"Protection?" Isla asked.
"From what? I seemed to be able to handle to wolves just fine the last time you came to me." she said, Isla's offer had hit a nerve.
"Give me some time to think about it." Isla said, realizing that Valerie wasn't trying to make it easy for her.
"Take your time." she said as Isla's phone beeped, indicating that Valerie had hung up.
She paced across the room, not knowing what to do. She was well aware of the pack's distrust in a female alpha. If they weren't willing to have Hayden as an alpha, her chances were slim. This wasn't a realization that just hit and even so, this was the only time her gut told her that she couldn't do it. Not on her own at least.
If Valerie wasn't going to bend for her, which was definitely the case, she needed backup. Someone who had the same thoughts as her to an extent. She needed help from outside the pack.
She needed Hayden.
