Chapter 2
~Evan's POV~
"Mom, I'll be fine! It's North Carolina. I'll be living in a nice house in a safe area. Everything will be fine, you just have to trust me," I comforted my mom on the phone. I hear her take a deep breath.
"I'm your mother! I just don't want to think that you'll be wandering the streets, no where to live because you got kicked out of your house or something! It's scary knowing that I won't be able to help you when you need someone to be by your side the most!" her concerned voice comes through the phone. I understand where she's coming from but it's my life. A new life in America, not in Canada. I'll miss Canada but I feel like there'll be more opportunities in America.
"Don't worry! I just need to call the house investor, wait for the furniture, set the house up and home sweet home! Everything is going to be okay, I just know it. I gotta go now. Bye Mom! Love you!" We said our goodbyes and I hung up. I then dialed the house investor to talk about my house.
"Evan! I was just about to call you. I have news that I hope you'll understand. So the owner of the house that you bought have bills and taxes that they haven't paid for that house along with the ones stacking up now. Until the owner pays it all off, you can have the house and the owner can go off in their merry way but you have to wait. You'l get the house eventually when it's all paid off but I suggest staying at a hotel for now. So... Bye!" he hangs up abruptly, leaving me to process what he just said. Ironic how I told my mom almost the opposite of what just happened.
"Motherfucker," I huffed in annoyance. Damn house investor could've told me this beforehand so I could've booked a hotel room. I think I saw an apartment a block away from where I'm at. I go onto my phone and looked it up to see that I was right.
"Better start walking," I thought as I started tugging my luggage to the apartment. It's not a bad walk and would be nice if I wasn't feeling so peeved about that call or lugging my baggage around.
I arrived at the apartment. It was a somewhat small building but is big enough that I know should have an elevator and isn't the cleanest on the outside but who am I to judge, maybe the landlord doesn't have enough workers to clean the outside. I check my phone to see that I'm at the right place and make my way through the front lobby's door.
The first thing that I'm drawn to is to the two people laughing at the front desk, especially the guy. His laugh sounded insane and, like he's going to go off and murder somebody. A girl with long platinum hair is leaning back against an old chair behind the front desk with her feet up on the counter dressed in clothes that makes me want to think that she's pretending to work here but I mean, she could be working here but getting fired very soon with how she's casually smoking a cigarette. And then there's the guy with the crazy laughter who has short black hair leaning against the counter of the desk by the girl's feet. They're both good looking, around my age it seems and with the way they're laughing, I would consider them as a couple. What's noticeable with those two at first glance is the girl's untied white bow tie and the guy's blue hoodie.
I had a bit of trouble with my luggage but I managed going through the door thankfully. I see the guy wave to the girl as he made his way towards me. I think he didn't see me when he turned around to look ahead of him because he accidentally bumped into me.
"I'm sorry," is all he said, looking apologetic as he grabbed my shoulders to steady my teetering body carrying my luggage. Once he sees I've gained my balance, his blue eyes looking a tiny bit guilty and very apologetic, smiles at me before going out the front door to go to wherever he's off to. He seems like a nice guy.
"Just tell me what the hell you're doing here and why so I can give you a goddamn room already. You look like you're here for a vacation, not on a business trip like some people that are here," she says, dropping her feet to the floor and pulling out a clipboard and pen. There's a slight rude attitude as she spoke but I think she's upset that her friend or boyfriend left. Yeah, let's go with that.
"Isn't this an apartment building though? Why are people here for trips or business meetings when they could've booked a hotel room?" I can't help asking. Is there anyone that live lives here?
She raises her eyebrow. "And why are you asking? Look at this place! Is this really a place that you want to live in for the rest of your life? Of course not. It's a cheap place to spend a few nights if you don't have a lot of money or just don't want to bother with paying too much. The only people that actually live in this dump is me, Johnny Boy and a couple other people who I don't care to remember."
As she finished talking, I got the few suitcases that I have to the counter and nodded my head. I grab my wallet for my credit card. Johnny Boy must be the man in the blue hoodie.
"I'm Evan," I politely smiled. The girl looked up and grunted, "Delia."
Delia tosses me a key on a chain and tells me not to lose it before leaning back against the chair and smoking away. Just like I thought this place would have, there's the elevator between the front desk and the stairs. With the elevator going up, it slightly shook and shake. The weight in the elevator might be why it's shaking so but I know that I'll be taking the stairs from now on unless I'm feeling really lazy.
Going up to the third floor, I found my room a couple rooms down in the corridor from the elevator and opened the door to see an empty apartment room. It's not as dirty as I thought it'll be but it does need a bit of cleaning up. There's a small kitchen, a living room with a couch and a TV table with no TV on it, a hallway leading to a bedroom, a bathroom, a small guest room or storage room and a tiny closet filled with dirty towels. Not a terrible place but it could also be better.
"I'm just here for a couple of days, I'll be fine," I thought as I grimaced with slight disgust at the old, dirty white paint slightly peeling off of the walls. I placed my baggage of my clothes and a few essentials by the bed in the bedroom I'm in. I walked over to the window and drew the curtains opened only a dirty window but past that, I see a garden that looks to be forgotten with vines growing on the cement walls and a small path leading deeper into the garden that I can't see.
"Whoever made that garden before must've cared for it a lot, it looked like it looked good before it started to become forgotten."
I check my phone for a store close by here and look around my new home. It'll be a good place to stay in once it's been cleaned up a bit. All I can do now is wait and see how long I'll be living in my temporary home.
I'm not sure which state Jonathon actually lives in because I've been told that he lives in North Carolina, South Carolina, even Virginia! Make up your mind people and give me the truth! And as for the house investor problem yada yada thingy, just play along as it goes with the story. So important things to talk about is if you bother liking this book so far then I'm going camping over the weekend! Yay... I was gonna update but no, my family had to screw my plans over... ;~;
