Bella's POV
By morning, the idea had formed fully in my head. It was so simple, yet so brilliant. Now all I had to do was get Edward to agree to it.
At lunch, I had worked up the courage to bring up my plan to Edward.
"Um . . . Edward?" I asked tentatively.
"Yeah, Bella?" He replied.
"You know . . . what you said about your dad - Carlisle - only changing wounded ones on the brink of death, and how he saved you and Esme?" I questioned.
There was a brief pause as he took in my question."Yes. What about it?" I replied, his face devoid of emotion.
"I'm just wondering . . . if you bit me," I hesitated, noticing the look that Edward was giving me, " . . . would I be healed?"
"What," said Edward, his voice dripping with venom, "Gave you the impression that I would ever agree to bite you?"
I recoiled, my voice suddenly sounding very pathetic and weak in my own ears. "Well, theoretically, I'm just saying, if I were to get turned into a vampire-"
"I absolutely forbid it." He interrupted me. "You are not going to become a vampire."
"Fine. If someone of my condition - someone of paralysis - were to get turned into a vampire, would they be fully healed?" I amended.
"Yes," he said slowly, "But under no condition will I allow you to become a vampire."
"Fine." I huffed, and turned around to eat my food.
I ignored him for the rest of lunch, and there was an awkward silence between us as we walked to biology. I was planning on keeping it that way for the rest of the day, until he started talking to me.
"So . . . my family and I, we're playing baseball tonight. Do you want to come?"
I imagined how much more my mom would tease me for this and hesitated, but then thought about his family. If I get him, or any one of them to change me, then we'll be like a family. If I go, I can get to know them better.
"Sure, I'd love to." I answered, smiling.
Edward's POV
We were sitting at a table as usual when Bella suddenly spoke up after being deep in thought for a few minutes.
"Um . . . Edward?" She asked.
"Yeah, Bella?" I replied.
"You know . . . what you said about your dad - Carlisle - only changing wounded ones on the brink of death, and how he saved you and Esme?" She asked?
What in the world is this about? I wondered, but answered smoothly, a century of practice helping me to not let my confusion show on my face. "Yes. What about it?" I could feel her desperately trying to read my face, but I just sat there, waiting for her to make the next move.
"I'm just wondering . . . if you bit me," I looked at her in plain disbelief. Did she really think she could ever persuade me to change her? Carlisle only ever changed those on the brink of death. Why would she want to entitle herself to this life- this life of one without a soul, having to feed of animal blood, this cursed, immortal life? Didn't she know how much I hated what I was?
" . . . would I be healed?" I only half heard her complete her sentence.
"What," I said angrily, "Gave you the impression that I would ever agree to bite you?" Why would she even want to be a vampire?
She visibly shrunk away from me, and I felt a sudden wave of guilt and urge to comfort her crash over me. "Well, theoretically, I'm just saying, if I were to get turned into a vampire-" She began again.
"I absolutely forbid it." I interrupted her. "You are not going to become a vampire."
"Fine. If someone of my condition - someone of paralysis - were to get turned into a vampire, would they be fully healed?" Bella asked.
"Yes," I said slowly, knowing what she was implying, but I just decided to let it go, for I had bugged her enough about this already. "But under no condition will I allow you to become a vampire."
"Fine." She said, and deliberately turned her back to me.
She kept her back turned to me the whole lunch, and we walked in silence to biology.
"So . . . my family and I, we're playing baseball tonight. Do you want to come?" I asked her after we sat down.
Bella considered this for a while. Then, all of a sudden, she broke into a wide smile. "Sure, I'd love to."
