Chapter 19-Conversations

A/N: I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I know I'm a horrible person for not updating. Please don't kill me. *Cowers behind a stack of books* Forget writing, I haven't even been reading on Wattpad lately. I didn't expect school to be so busy, and this is the first real break I've had for a while. My three day weekends and normal weekends were usually spent on trying to catch up on things that I had been procrastinating on . . . so yeah. I was trying to finish this quickly for you guys, so it might not be of the best quality. I'll try to update more this week, but if I can't (since I have a project due once I get back to school), I'll update durning winter break. Thank you for bearing with me for not updating and everything . . . I know first hand how that feels, and it's not very enjoyable. Enjoy, and don't kill me for not updating!

Bella's POV

We sat awkwardly together during lunch. Even though the date had been great, our little spat was still hanging over us like a dark storm cloud.

While I would agree to the operation if he asked - my mother had persuaded me that much - I wouldn't bring it up on my own accord. To appease him, I would let him pay for the operation, but after that, I would somehow convince him to change me - I wasn't too sure on the details yet, but I knew I could convince him somehow.

I doubted either one of us wanted to get into another argument, so we steered clear away from that subject - meaning I would have more time to devise my plan before it was too late or I was too much older than him.

The tension between us was thick enough to cut through with a knife, and the rest of the Cullens were rather subdued, sneaking glances at us. It was obvious that they had been informed of the events that had occurred on our date.

I pretended to be reading one of my favorite books, Wuthering Heights, but I knew that he could tell that I wasn't actually reading it.

Awkwardly trying to make small talk, Edward asked, "How many times have you read that book?"

I paused, thinking back. I had first read this book . . . two years ago? . . . and on a yearly basis, I read it . . . never mind, I have no idea. "Um, too many times to count." I replied, offering him a small smile, trying to break the tension.

"So . . . about the operation . . ." The temperature in the cafeteria seemed to have suddenly dropped ten degrees, and we suddenly seemed like we were in our own little bubble, as the noise and chatter of all the other students in the cafeteria dimmed. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw one of Edward's siblings - Alice, I think - smacked her head into the table lightly in exasperation. Oh. So they were listening in on our conversation. It's not a private as I thought. I realized. Well duh, they're vampires. They have super hearing, remember? I wanted to smack myself too.

"What about it?" I asked, trying to keep my voice even. "We discussed this yesterday . . . do you need a reminder about the terms of the agreement?"

"Well .  . . no." Edward replied, "I was just wondering if you had changed your mind."

Well, originally I was going to, but if you're going to act like that, then no. I thought angrily to myself. "Change my mind?" I scoffed. "You wish."

Dong. Dong. Dong. I nearly cried in relief . . . until I realized that Edward was also in my next class, biology. I stifled a groan, and wheeled myself briskly to class, ignoring Edward.

Edward's POV

Sitting there with Bella, during lunch, I was very aware of my siblings not so subtly watching us and eavesdropping on our conversation. Sometimes I liked them being aware of everything that was going on, so I didn't have to repeat conversations and the like, but sometimes, like now, it was just plain annoying.

Bella, obviously sensing the people starting to look over at our table and the tension in the air, whipped out a book - one that I had seen her read countless times - Wuthering Heights - and started to "read". But I knew she wasn't really reading, by the way her eyes kept darting from the page to everyone around us in the cafeteria, everyone but me.

Having nothing to do, I let myself listen to snippets of thoughts floating around the busy cafeteria.

'Eric is just so cute . . . if only he would just ask me out.'

'Ew . . . what's in this food?'

'Edward. Dude. Do something. Make conversation or something, don't just sit there!'

I looked over at Emmett, and he smirked, knowing that I had heard him. He gestured at Bella with his head, and mouthed TALK. I rolled my eyes at him, but turned back to Bella nonetheless.

Having no idea what to say, I looked over at Bella and just blurted out, "How many times have you read that book?"

She looked up from the book and cocked her head to the side, obviously thinking. If only I could hear her thoughts! "Um, too many times to count." She finally replied, giving me a small smile that looked more like a wince.

"So . . . about the operation . . ." I trailed off awkwardly.

'SERIOUSLY?!?!?! REALLY EDWARD? YOU JUST HAD TO? WOW. JUST WOW.'

I winced, and turned to look apologetically at Alice, just to see her banging her head on the table lightly, repeatedly. Jasper glared at me, as if saying 'Now look what you've done.' Shaking my head at them, I turned back to Bella, who looked at me like I had just grown another head.

Her eyes flashed, "What about it?" She retorted, "We discussed this yesterday . . . do you need a reminder about the terms of the agreement?"

"Well . . . no." I said slowly, "I was just wondering if you had changed your mind."

"Changed my mind? You wish." She scoffed, but I could tell that something was off. That it was not what she really thought.

Dong. Dong. Dong. What? Why is lunch so short? Glancing down at my watch, I realized that it was a Wednesday, Oh right . . . it's Wednesday. Of course . . .

Bella wheeled herself away as fast as she could. I could have easily caught up to her, but I decided to let her go.
