Chapter 25 - The Aftermath
Edward's POV
"Her eyes are flickering, it should only take a few minutes more." Carlisle informed us under his breath, "Someone go notify the wolves."
"Bella. Bella? Can you hear me?" I asked frantically. A hand latched itself onto my shoulder, reassuringly.
"Give her time, son. She'll be fine."
This endless waiting game was excruciating. This was the third day. There was no sign of life as she lay perfectly still on her bed, except for the slight fluttering of her eyelids.
"Almost there." Carlisle murmured.
Her eyes opened wide, a blood red shade.
"Bella?" I asked cautiously. Seemingly startled, she launched herself off the bed and crunched in a defensive position in the corner of the room. I reached out to her. Slowing getting up from her position on the ground she walked towards me, entwining her hand in mine. I winced at the firm hold and let out an involuntary yelp.
She gasped. "Are you okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine." I reassured her in a gentle voice, "Newborns just tend to be stronger in general."
"Sorry." She bit her lip nervously.
"Come on. Let's go hunt. Jump." I motioned her over to the window as my family filed out of the room, sensing that they were not needed.
"Y-you want me to jump?" Bella asked, arching an eyebrow with a hint of fear in her voice.
"Yeah. Don't worry, you're not fragile anymore." I said with a laugh.
She took an unneeded breath to prepare herself for the jump, and observed the ground below, and jumped, landing much further than needed. Bella looked back at me, and I jumped, landing right next to her in a crouched position.
"Follow me," I told her and lead her to our normal hunting grounds, the wind whistling through my hair as we ran, barely keeping pace with each other.
Bella's POV
The excruciating pain stopped, and I knew it must have been around three days.
"Almost there," I heard someone (Carlisle?) mutter.
I opened my eyes. I could see everything in such fine detail. Who knew there were so many dust particles just floating around in the air, that humans could not see? I sensed a movement over near the door of the room, and a voice.
"Bella?" Startled, I launched into the air and into a defensive crouch in the corner of the room, barely aware that I had moved. I took in the room from my position on the ground. Edward and Carlisle were standing near the doorway, watching me. Edward. My body relaxed and I walked over to him. I was there in the blink of an eye, and I wound my hand in his. He winced at my touch. I immediately recoiled.
"Are you okay?" I gasped.
"Yes, I'm fine." He smiled, and I let out an unnecessary breath that I didn't know I was holding, "Newborns just tend to be stronger in general."
"Sorry." I bit my lip, but noticed the hardness of it and stopped.
"Come on. Let's go hunt. Jump." He gestured towards the window.
"Y-you want me to jump?" I asked cautiously. What if I hurt myself? What if I did it wrong? What if I messed up the sidewalk? Irrelevant fears raced through my head.
"Yeah. Don't worry, you're not fragile anymore." Edward laughed.
I took a deep breath and assessed the ground for good measure. Steeling myself, I jumped. Seeing that I had landed safely, I looked back and Edward and he was at my side in a fraction of a second.
"Follow me," He said, and we raced off into the woods.

A/N: I'm not sure if I should end it here or do a proper epilogue . . . What do you guys think? Also, I'm going to start a random collection of drafts and ideas in a book called "Fragments". It will be up on my profile soon. I might do a bonus chapter of how Bella had gotten paralyzed from the waist down in the first place. Choices, choices . . .
