"Come on Chris!" John was practically dragging me to a flat where he was going to audition for a bass part in this little band called Smile.

He told me to bring my guitar, which was very special to me, but he didn't tell me that he had mentioned that I play and sing (sometimes) to their frontman Freddie. Now the whole group wanted to meet me. "John, you didn't tell me that they wanted to see me. You only said that you wanted me there for emotional support."

"You'll be fine, Chris. Do you remember that bit that we do? You're going on your guitar, and I'm going on my bass. It won't be that hard." He pulled me into the driveway.

I pulled my arm from his grip. "John! You know I hate singing in front of people! Especially new people, who don't know me. What did you tell them about me anyway?" I wouldn't mind playing and singing with John, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit, but the fact that we were singing in front of people that I had never met, and who would probably judge my every move, didn't exactly make me eager to perform.

"Nothing bad, I promise. I just told them that I know a guy who can play instruments and sing. I'd never say anything that wasn't true, or that you're not comfortable saying."

I was about to give him a really snarky retort, but the door opened, and one of my classmates opened the door. "Hey there John. You must be Chris then I'm guessing? I'm Brian." He held out his hand for me to shake.

"Yeah." I shook his hand and was invited in behind John.

Their flat was pretty decently sized, considering the circumstances. They had to have at least four bedrooms if they were planning on making John a part of the band. There was a decent sized kitchen, which Brian walked into, and the living room, which had two couches, two chairs, and a nice fireplace. There was a blonde man sitting on one of the couches with a beer.

"Hey, John! And you must be Chris. I'm Roger." he didn't move to shake my hand but gestured to the many seats in the living room.

I sat on one of the chairs, and John sat near me. I turned and whispered to him. "Didn't you say there were three guys?"

He was about to say something when I heard a crash coming from the kitchen, followed by Brian yelling out in frustration. "Damn it, Freddie! This is why we never let you cook!"

Then I heard a new voice, one that was tinged with a more exotic accent. "Well, I'm sorry darling. There's company, and I wanted to make a good impression."

"Then you shouldn't have tried to cook! I had the time to warn John, but I wasn't able to warn his friend!"

Brian and, who I assumed was Freddie, walked into the living room. Freddie noticed me and looked me up and down not-so-subtly. "And quite the friend he is." He stuck a hand out for me to shake. "I'm Freddie."

I couldn't help but let the corners of my mouth turn up slightly as I returned his gesture. "I'm Chris." I stared at his smile for a moment. I thought it was beautiful.

He must have noticed me staring, and pulled his top lip over his teeth as he sat down. It made me a little bit sad that he didn't wear that amazing smile all of the time. 'What is going on with me? Why am I thinking this way about him?' I shook away the thought and tried to focus on the conversation.

"John, so you said that you don't sing?"

"No. Just play bass. But Chris sings and plays guitar and piano and all sorts of instruments." He gestured to me and I shot him a vicious glare.

"You sing?" Freddie looked at me with a little gleam in his eyes.

"Y-yeah. I don't do it much though. I prefer to be like John. Sitting in the background with an instrument."

Freddie looked almost disappointed. "What a shame, dear. I was looking forward to a real show today."

John nudged me and gestured for me to pull my guitar out. "We'll give you a show alright."

He pulled out his bass and I started strumming, trying desperately to lose myself in the song John wrote. He joined on his bass and soon I was singing without care.

"Don't you misfire, fill me up with the desire to carry on. Don't you know honey, that love's a game. It's always hit or miss, so take your aim. Got to hold on tight, shoot me out of sight. Don't you misfire, fill me up with the desire to carry on." John did his little bass solo, and background singing before I jumped in again. "Don't you misfire, fill me up with the desire to carry on. Your gun is loaded and pointed my way. There's only one bullet, so don't delay. Got to tome it right, fire me through the night. Come on take a shot, fire me higher. Don't you miss this time, please don't misfire. Misfire."

We had about twenty more seconds of instruments before the song ended. The smiles on the three men's faces were huge and priceless. Freddie looked at both of the others in turn, who nodded and then turned to us.

"I hereby welcome the new bassist and guitarist of Smile!"

John looked really relieved, and I just grinned happily to myself. I could be a part of this big group of misfits. This was going to be fun.
