Chapter 5

Percy's P.O.V.

My last thought before darkness consumed me was, "I failed you Annabeth."  I then went on to fall into a torturous dream that will forever haunt me.....

I opened my eyes, surrounded by utter destruction. Standing in the rubble of what used to be the cabins, I was at Camp Halfblood. It was barely recognizable. Every single building was demolished and in pieces, littered all over the ground. Even the Big House, which was the only reason I knew where I was, had been mostly brought to the ground. All that remained was the surprisingly untouched porch. The way it stood out from all of the carnage made me suspect that someone wanted me to see the porch.

Everything was on fire and smoke was the only thing I could breathe. I started to panic. Ever since I almost drowned that time with Hazel and Frank, I have developed a fear of suffocation. Not being able to breathe normally is also a fear of mine. I could feel my heartbeat in my head and hot tears rolling down my face.

Then the coughing started. A couple seconds after, I couldn't get any air into my lungs. Every time I tried I'd just end up coughing. Crawling through burning pieces of the cabins, I croaked a plead for help. Not being able to hear my own voice, I hopelessly fell to the ground.

When I forced myself to stand, I saw something that made me want to jump into the fire and get it over with. Just getting out of the wreckage from the cabins, I had seen Destruction about 100 feet away. His vicious smile revealed the cause of all of this. He stood there in dark battle armor with a sword that looked like it sucked the light out of everything. The worst part, however, was laying right in front of me.

All of my friends were on the ground. Their eyes were open, but all I had to do was look into them to know my friends were all dead. Jason, Leo, Piper, Hazel, Frank, Nico, Thalia, Grover, and all of the other campers were lying at my feet. My closer friends were the ones that were inches from me, while the other campers were farther out.

Grief mixed with anger consumed me as Destruction and I charged each other, me being weaponless. Right before we collided, everything turned dark again.
***********************************
My eyes opened to the feeling of tears streaming down my face and to the sound of Annabeth crying my name. I could feel that my whole body except my head was in the ocean. My wise girl hovered above my face still trying to call out to me. I unsuccessfully tried to say something so I concentrated and tried again.

"H-how...... How am I still alive?"

"Percy!" She sobbed at the sound of my voice and cradled my head in her arms, "You can't do that anymore you idiot! Stop trying to be the hero all the time
You would've died!" She was still sobbing. I was finally able to process everything so then the guilt and relief started to flood in. Guilt because of the emotional stress I must have caused Annabeth. Relief because I was still alive which meant I could still protect her. Then I realized something else.

"Annabeth, you saved my life."

"Of course, Percy. Don't bother feeling all grateful and thanking me because you saved my life too by shooting me out the water."

"That must've been better than any water ride you've ever been on," I laughed at the thought of seeing her startled expression as the ocean suddenly pushed her through the sky.

She smirked and said, "Well most rides don't end up with me being dropped onto a random island."

I tried to sit up but as soon as I did my vision became red as pain coursed through my body. I almost blacked out when Annabeth quickly pushed me back into the ocean, my head underwater his time. I was able to stay conscious and my vision gradually turned to normal. It took a little while longer for the pain to subside, but after 5 minutes, my body no longer ached. I rested in the water for a couple more minutes before Annabeth slowly pulled me so that my head was on the sand again.

"Yeah, I think I'll lay down for a while." I sighed as Annabeth became concerned.

"The ocean isn't fully healing you right away like it usually does. What exactly happened over there with you and that monster?"

"All it did was claw at me.  Then I was flying back before you called my name."  All of a sudden I remembered my terrible dream and knew that I had to get up. That dream was going to happen. I just knew it. However, I needed to be there to at least stop the death of my friends. Grief hit me as I realized that my home was going to be destroyed. I needed to get up. Move Percy, move!

Something coursed inside of me as I thought about all of this. It gave me strength and it started to restore me back to normal. But then as soon as this something came, it was gone. As I suddenly stood up like nothing ever happened, a startled Annabeth questioned my recovery.

"Percy! What-How-T-that's just impossible!" Her confused face was hilarious and I just had to laugh. Although I was also confused.

"I felt something stir inside of me and it started to heal me. Next thing I know, I'm perfectly healthy. I have no clue what's going on either." I then turned very serious. I brushed aside my recovery and described my dream to her. "This is going to happen, Annabeth. I need to go back to camp."

"But what can you do against him!" My next words were very hard to say, but I knew they had to be said.

"Look, you won't be able to accept this, but I know I'm going to die," Before she could say anything I cut her off, "Before that happens, I will find a way to protect everyone I care about! And...... I'm sorry Annabeth. There's no way that I'm going to be able to make it this time."

I took her into my arms as she sobbed into my chest. Annabeth knew that there was no way I could live. No matter how much she didn't want to, she was forced to accept it.

As she continued to cry, she asked, "Do you think Nico would be able to take me to the underworld to visit your ghost in Elysium?"

"Probably. Him being an expert on dead people, I'm pretty sure he'd find away." I smirked, attempting to lighten the mood. "Annabeth, I love you. I'm so happy that I've been able to spend this time with you."

I then got one of those gorgeous smiles from Annabeth that I always cherish. "I love you too, Percy. I'll be by your side for as long as I can." We stood there in each other's arms for a minute, enjoying the other's embrace. I then brought her face up so that we were looking into each other's eyes. Her striking grey eyes made my heart melt and we fell into a kiss. The only thing that mattered at that moment was the love flowing through our lips.

The kiss was broken by a sudden and urgent voice that made both me and Annabeth jump. "Percy! Annabeth!"

We both turned towards the ocean to see Jason's face floating in the air with Camp Halfblood behind him. It was an Iris Message. "Hey Jason, we were about to come back because something horrible is about to happen at camp."

"Percy, it already is happening. After you left Destruction disappeared and ignored us at first. But now he's attacking the camp and its-" Jason was cut off by a huge explosion on his side and the he was gone.

Fear gripped my heart at the sound of that explosion. As Annabeth gripped my hand, I could tell that she felt the same way. So without a word, I conjured up the usual air bubble around Annabeth. This time, however, I made it several times stronger around her whole body, because I planned on going a lot faster than last time.

I took Annabeth in my arms and, using the ocean to provide the extra muscle in my legs, I leaped out into the sea with so much power I made a crater just as big as the one Destruction made in the sand. Going at such a high speed, I thought I was going to break the sound barrier. A couple miles later I finally fell off of the momentum of my jump from the sand and dived into the ocean. By now we've been off that island for ten minutes and I could already sense the magic of Camp Halfblood. My speed surprised me, but I kept on going. At some point I must've sped up because seconds later, we were at the shore of camp.

I was very impressed as Annabeth, not disoriented from that kind of speed at all, stood up and started running towards the spot Jason Iris Messaged us. I began to follow her before I saw the fire.

It was at the entrance to camp. I could see it all the way from here. As I felt the borders around the camp weaken, I knew what was being burned by that huge fire. It was the Golden Fleece. Somebody had gotten past Peleus and took the the fleece off of Thalia's old tree. There was one thing that still didn't make sense to me, though.

What kind of fire can burn the Golden Fleece? I was so lost in my thoughts that I forgot that I was supposed to be running. Annabeth yelled out to me,

"Percy! What the heck are you doing? Let's go, there's no time!" With that I caught up with Annabeth and together we ran towards the fire.

We soon found ourselves at Thalia's tree where Destruction was waiting for us. He was sitting down, as if he'd been waiting for a while. He was wearing the same armor as in my dream. The sword he wielded was also the same.

Behind him lied the Golden Fleece still wrapped around the tree but both the tree and fleece were on fire and burning. There was barely anything left of the tree except for the roots and the lower half of it. The branches and top half had been already destroyed in the fire. The fleece was still recognizable, but you could feel the magic of it fading away as it burned.

I took a better look at the fire to figure out why it was able to do this to the Golden Fleece. As I studied the fire I saw that it was the regular orange mixed with the darkest black I have ever seen. It must've been a special fire that only Destruction could create. I just couldn't let this happen.

"Destruction, stop! Stop that fire and just fight me!" These brave words only made him chuckle.

"Perseus, you had your chance to fight me, but you decided to run away. So as payment for your cowardice, you must watch the Golden Fleece die." That fleece was the key to the safety of this camp. I had to do something.

For a moment I just stood there with my eyes closed. I imagined the entire sea bending to my will. I knew that the next thing I was about to do was going to cause me excruciating pain. I braced myself and summoned every single drop of the sea I could muster up and threw it onto the tree with so much force it sounded like thunder. I took Annabeth in my arms before she could be blown back by the impact. Destruction flew to the side, being caught off guard.

Then the pain kicked it and I cried out as I let go of Annabeth, falling to the ground. I couldn't see any fire anymore so I assumed I put it out. I couldn't be sure from the ground. I forced myself to stand through the pain and I saw that my assumption was true.

"Now what did you do with my friends, Destruction?" As he stood up, I could see an evil grin on Destruction's face.

"Oh their off fighting all those Giants and Titans in the woods with the gods. Your welcome to go see how many people have died by now." He laughed the last part out. I then realized he was letting me go so I took Annabeth's hand and ran towards the woods.

As we got there and surveyed the area, relief flooded through me. Everyone was still alive and fighting. It looked like a one or two giants and Titans had been taken care of, but things weren't looking too good. The gods and campers were getting exhausted and you could see that they were gradually doing worse and worse.

"Annabeth, you get all of the campers out of here since they can die and I'll hold off the Titans and Giants with the gods." I didn't give her a chance to argue as I ran towards the battle field, sword drawn. I heard her running behind me and I smiled at the fact that she listened to me without an argument. All of a sudden, Destruction's voice filled my head. "No matter how far you run, your death will always be waiting right next to you." I had a horrible thought and hoped that I was wrong. I stopped running as I felt something in my chest.
I looked down to see a bloody knife tip sticking out of my chest around the area of my heart. This is Annabeth's knife. As I fell to the ground I saw Annabeth standing behind me, her eyes the same as Destruction's; pure black. My last thought was, "Annabeth killed me.........."
