Phantom Attraction
A/N: This story takes place after the Musaigen no Phantom World OVA. If you haven't seen it, but have seen the anime, what is wrong with you? I guess I will try to lay out the situation anyways. Also, it is from Haruhiko's point of view. Please enjoy!
Other than the sheer embarrassment I experienced, the summer camp returned to normal after the disappearance of the Phantom. Fighting the Phantom took up most of our day time, and now, shortly after, we are returning to the housing.
"This is why I hate summer," I mumble to myself as I drag myself to the room for guys.
Ruru follows beside me and says, "I didn't know you had it in you, Haruhiko!"
I ignore her and lay facedown on my sleeping roll. I can never show my face to the girls again. Especially Mai-senpai, knowing that I called out to her specifically. How could this happen? I was just trying to do the right thing!
Footsteps draw closer and Shousuke says,"Haruhiko! We're about to start the evening activities! Come on!"
"Go on without me," I say without moving.
There's a short silence and then the sound of footsteps trailing away. I know I should be enjoying the summer with my friends, but they all probably think I'm a pervert now.
A short time passes, and I sit recollecting the events. I did bring a book with me, so I guess I can read that now. Suddenly, I once again hear footsteps drawing nearer, but it's too early for anyone to already be done for the night.
"What do you think you're doing?" says a familiar voice. It's Mai-senpai.
"S-Senpai?" I say, turning to look at her. "What are you doing here?"
"Well, I heard that a certain someone was a little too embarrassed to come and hang out with us," says Mai. I don't even know how to respond. I look down and can feel the redness across my face. "It's only going to be a big deal if you make it one. Now come on."
As she says this, she walks over to me and grabs me by the hand. I quickly lift my head, catching direct contact between Mai's beautiful purple eyes and mine. She pulls me up and starts to drag me away, and there is nothing I want to do about it.
The night is filled with energy. We play lots of games, crack lots of jokes, and have a great time. Eventually it's lights out, and I lie wide awake beside the snoring Shousuke.
If it weren't for Mai-senpai, I might of made that situation bigger than it needed to be. But really, I think it's because I cared about what Mai thought the most. If it were anybody else that tried to drag me out there, I would of put up a lot more of a fight.
Since I'm not falling asleep any time soon, I guess I'll get some fresh air again tonight. I wonder if Mai is awake again tonight too.
I step out to find my suspicions correct. Mai stands in the moonlight, resting up against the railing of the patio. She's truly beautiful.
"Still unable to sleep?" I ask.
"Haruhiko," says Mai, taking notice of me. "I guess so. You too?" She turns her attention back to the star filled sky.
"Yeah... I might have to plug up Shousuke's mouth," I reply.
Mai laughs and says, "I'm glad to see that you're back to your usual self." Mai smiles at me.
"Thanks to you," I say, passing her a smile back.
Looking at Mai like this floods my mind with happiness. I can't help but remember all the things we've been through together, the things she said last night, and the way she looked earlier today. Senpai has grown a lot since it was just her and I on the team. The words she said last night:
"It's not that bad having friends."
I got to see a side of her that I've never seen before. Combine that with her amazing looks, and I just can't help but fall for her.
"Senpai," I say.
Mai turns to me, "Hmm?"
I turn and bow in front of her, "I am truly sorry for what happened earlier today! I shouldn't have been looking at you that way, and I made you see something you didn't want to see!"
"Haruhiko," says Mai in shock. There's a short pause before she continues, "What are you talking about? If anything, I should be thanking you!"
"What?" I reply. I wasn't expecting that!
"If you hadn't told us what to do, we would of never beaten that Phantom. And there were some sleaze balls being way more perverted than you were Haruhiko," says Mai, looking quite embarrassed. "Honestly, I'm a little flattered that you couldn't control yourself." Mai brushes a few hairs behind her ear and blushes.
"I couldn't have done it without you, Senpai. You gave me the strength. I didn't want your view of friends to change from what they were last night, and I don't want it to change ever again," I say. Senpai's eyes widen and she blushes even more.
"Haruhiko... What are you saying?" says Senpai.
I take a deep breath, and build the courage to do what I couldn't do last night. I take Mai-senpai's hand into mine and say, "I never want you to feel alone ever again, because... I love you."
Tears begin to run down Mai's face, and she's gone completely red. "You idiot!" she yells. Suddenly, she pulls me close and kisses me on the lips. Her soft lips set my mind aflame, and I can't pull myself away, nor do I want to. When we finally stop for air, Mai says, "I love you too."
Cheers can be heard from behind us. We both quickly turn to see our friends step in on us once again.
"Wooh! Do it again!" shouts Ruru in excitement.
"I'm so happy for the both of you," says Reina, uncovering Kurumi's eyes.
Embarrassed, Mai buries her face into my shoulder, and I just let a huge smile overcome my face.
I wrap my arms around her and ask, "I know this is really sudden and all, but when we get back, I'm sure Ruru wouldn't mind another girl in the house. I'm not trying to speed things up, but living by yourself isn't all it's cracked up to be."
"You can't just spring that on a girl Haruhiko! Give it at least a week! Sheesh!" replies Mai with a laugh.
With another kiss, we head to separate rooms for the night. We enjoyed the rest of our summer trip together as a couple, and after a little while of dating, Mai finally moved in with Ruru and I.
