Robin dove under the water. A wave was bearing down on him, and he felt it roll over his body.
He popped up out of the salty ocean next to his teammates. Zatanna looked at him, then raised a brow.
"What?" Dick asked.
He realized what was wrong as she said, "You have some nice eyes there, Rob."
"My shades!" he blurted, closing said baby blue eyes. Wally and Artemis, who were also in the water, laughed as he pawed around looking for them.
"Not funny, guys," he snapped. "My identity is a secret!"
"Relax, Rob, it was only for a second," Kid Flash said, waving him off.
"At least we know he's not Medusa under there," Artemis snickered.
Zatanna rolled her eyes, fishing for the shades. She found them half buried in the sandy bottom and handed them back.
"Thanks," he muttered, shoving them back on. "And don't think I've--"
Another wave hit him full on in the face, stopping him. Thankfully, he'd managed to grab on to the sunglasses, but when he came back up he was draped in seaweed.
All three laughed even harder, and Robin could hear M'gann and Conner doing the same on the shore. He spit some water out of his mouth.
"This is a disaster," he grumbled. "Heavy on the dis."
Kaldur came up beside him and pulled off the seaweed, but even he was chuckling. "Why not just wear your mask, my friend? It won't fall off like your shades."
"That would look stupid," he replied without thinking. "And aren't we supposed to be civilians?"
Wally snorted. "I don't think a mask is going to look any worse than those glasses, dude. And Miss M isn't lookin' very civilian-ish."
Dick glanced behind him, but he already knew that she was green. Plus, Kaldur had gills. Zatanna and Connor never hid their faces. Honestly, if anyone saw them out there it wouldn't be too hard to deduce who they were.
"Fine, fine," Robin sighed. "I wanted to get out of the water anyway."
Everyone else agreed, and they joined Conner and Megan. The two were building a sandcastle, but even with Miss M's telekinesis it was looking more like a lump of nothing.
The seven had lunch, enjoying the warm sun. School would start soon, and that meant they'd have to start juggling team time and homework again. Bleh.
"So, I was thinking," Wally began, munching on a hot dog, "we haven't had a mission for a while, and we're getting nowhere looking for Speedy. I want to do something awesome before summer ends."
Conner looked interested. "Okay, I'll bite. What do you have in mind?"
Wally grinned. "Have you ever heard of Amity Park?"
"That's the town full of ghosts, right?" Miss Martian clarified.
"Yeah. And someone's been keeping them under control. Another ghost, named Danny Phantom."
"Why would anyone trust a ghost to hunt down other ghosts?" Artemis wondered.
Robin snorted. "First, they don't trust him, and second, lots of superhumans hunt down other superhumans. It's not that different."
Artemis glared. "Yes it is!"
"Anyway," Wally interrupted impatiently, "the League has been keeping tabs on him, but it's pretty difficult. He disappeared for a month and came back only a few weeks ago."
"Didn't he kidnap the mayor? And destroy half the city a few times?" Zatanna asked.
Wally nodded. "But the League haven't been able to do a more thorough investigation because of everything happening lately."
"Are you suggesting that we take him into custody without the permission of the League?" Aqualad asked, knowing full well what the answer would be.
"Duh."
* * *
Later that day, Robin decided to do his own investigating.
A simple internet search supplied a surprising amount of information. There were news articles, pictures, and youtube videos of the ghost teen.
Half called him a menace, while the other called him a hero. One particular blog, which was written anonymously, had a vast compilation of info and speculation. He scrolled through a post.
Okay, guys, it's theory time! Everyone knows that Danny Phantom is like, super mysterious, especially since he disappeared for a month. But why is he doing what he's doing? A fellow blogger of mine had the idea that maybe Phantom thinks he's still alive and wants to defend his fellow people. But he's mentioned before that he's a ghost, so that can't be it. One thing I've noticed is that all these ghosts seem to have some kind of obsession. In life, did he dream of being a superhero? He certainly doesn't dress like a traditional hero; no cape and tights. Although, I think he's got more style than most of them.
Robin self-consciously fingered his pants. They weren't tights, they were made of a special material that was nearly rip-proof. Jeez, at least his costume was practical.
On another note, why do the other ghosts hate him so much? And then there's that metal one, Skulker, the self-proclaimed Ghost Zone's greatest hunter. Two things about him: why does he want to hunt Phantom so badly, and what is this Ghost Zone that he and the others talk about? Is it another dimension? Do ghosts live there? If so, does Phantom live there? I think that maybe Phantom is different than normal ghosts. The whole superhero complex he has really helps out the city, but his motivation is still a mystery. And what about the time that he 'kidnapped' the mayor? That was really out of character. Was he framed? Or maybe being controlled? That's all I have for today, fellow Phans (that's what I'm going to call you guys now. Deal with it.) Stay tuned for the next post!
So Phantom had a fanbase. Dick hadn't realized that the guy was this popular. Then again, there were already so many supers popping up that the ghost wasn't really much of a worry to him. Until now.
There was something strange going on with the superhero, and finding out what was now near the top of his priorities. Just because people liked Phantom didn't mean he was a good guy. The public was crazy. Every super out there had a following, even thieves and killers.
Robin usually tried to avoid blogs such as this. He'd stumbled on one of himself recently, and deeply regretted it. Some weirdo had pretty crazy threories about his life behind the mask. He'd even read a fanfiction of himself once. It was really, really dark. And strange. And creepy.
And if someone could make him look that bad, they could make Phantom look neutral or even good. Either way, Dick's team was definitely going to bring him in for questioning.
Whether Phantom wanted them to or not.
