Empty
Simon parked his car on the side of the road like all the others. He stepped out onto the sidewalk while looking up and down the street. He spotted the store he was looking for. The camera store.
A small building, most likely empty every hour. How is it still in business? Not too sure with the decline of people actually needing to print pictures, which would be the main source of money, since phones are about.
The inside was very neat. A shiny white counter to the left with a cash register sat on top. Gray carpeting and built in lights on the ceiling. A few light rods flickering. The walls were lined with shelves decorated with cameras, both recreational and security, and even TVs. Cases stood in the center of the store showing off the newest of tech.
Simon stood there lost. He knew what he wanted but wasn't sure how to go about looking for it. The store didn't seem to have any in stock. No one was at the front desk, otherwise Simon would ask for help. And by ask he means he would just leave the store. He's not exactly the most assertive or brave person.
"I'm coming! I'm here! Please don't leave." A voice called from the back. Simon stuck his hands in his pockets that sat mid-torso. His jacket was short and small on his long body.
A short chubby man came out. Simon looked at the tag pinned on his shirt. It read, "Ethan".
"Hi there. How may I help you?" Ethan smiled. There was a genuine look in his eye: Appreciation. Simon took one large step to the counter.
"Uh, yeah. Do you happen to have any... polaroid cameras here? By any chance?"
"Umm..."
"It's fine if you don't but-"
"No, we might have some in the back. I'll go check." Ethan disappeared through the same door he had entered from.
Simon wanted the aesthetic feel and look of the pictures that the camera gives birth to. A normal camera would work fine and the pictures could be transferred straight onto the computer. But, he just wanted a polaroid. It would fit the persona he's going for.
Ethan came back in with a box covering his face.
"I've found one!" he exclaimed. "You're still here? Oh goodie!" He made eye contact with Simon causing Si to quickly smile at him. "And this is all you need? Do you know how to work it?"
"Uh, yeah." Simon pressed his lips together. Ethan rang up the item. As Simon gathered the necessary amount of money to pay, the worker started another conversation,
"There's lots of newer, better cameras; What do you want with a polaroid?"
"It's for a, uh, photography class I'm taking. In school." Simon handed him the payment, in cash, which Ethan found a little strange. But Simon doesn't have a credit card because he doesn't have a bank account because he doesn't have a job so what's the point? Well, murdering is sort of his job since that's where he gets money. He's not gonna steal clothes without stealing some cash.
"Oh that sounds fun! What school do you go to?"
"Just that community college down the way." Simon points in a nondescript direction. He can feel his body is extremely tense. He probably looked awful stiff.
"Liberty?" Simon nods having no choice. "I went there! How funny is that? Anyways, here's your camera," Ethan hands him a box. "And here's your receipt. Keep it so that way if you find a part's missing or something breaks you can exchange it or get it fixed."
"Alright, thanks!" Simon spun on his heals and headed for the door. His heart rate began to lower now that the confrontation was over.
"No, thank you! Have a nice day!" Ethan wished upon the costumer.
As Simon approached the door he had a thought. He might need Ethan's help in the near future.
"Hey, sir?" Simon looked behind himself to see the worker was still watching him closely.
"Yes?"
"Do you think you could find some free time to help me take photos some time?" he offers gently.
"Sure. I can do that." Ethan accepted. "And you can call me, Ethan."
"Cool. Call me, Simon. It's my name." They exchanged numbers and said goodbye once more.
Simon was excited to get home and set up his own bait Instagram account. The moment he arrived, he slinked upstairs to his room and got on his desktop computer. He set the camera next to him so he could open it later. He also made sure to tape the receipt to his computer so he wouldn't lose it.
