Feeling 'Squishy.'
Ricky emerged from the bathroom. It appeared he had showered but forgot to remove his clothes. His hair and shirt were soaked through. Droplets from his hair fell to the floor of his sister's apartment. He was numbed to it all.
He had witnessed a glorious sight. One that had left him scrambling to the bathroom, while questioning his moral compass. He wasn't sure if he should be happy about visiting Pamela or if he should've driven straight home from his parents' house. It was their nagging that forced Ricky to come here. They hadn't heard from Pamela since she started working for her brother.
Pamela Evens had a problem and wanted Jane's help. She had thought about what Jane had said on their first lunch date. Jane's encouragement played in her head, watering the seeds that had been planted.
Jane had done more than leave it as a polite conversation. She took the promise she made seriously. When she returned home, Hal hastily called Jane, asking if Pamela would be open to a meeting. Jane texted the plum-haired model, springing the news on her.
Pamela was mind blown; stunned; shocked; you name it. A company wanted her designs - hers! It couldn't be real, but it was. However, there was a downside. The company wanted to meet in a week and they needed an answer ASAP. That left Pamela a week to compose a portfolio of her best work, along with a presentation, and two already-made outfits.
The main worry that plagued the plumette, was Hal's company had no idea she was the Pamela Evens whose name had been muddled in the fashion world. What would they do once they meet her? Would her recent scandal prevent this huge opportunity? This left an overwhelmed Pamela Evens crying on the floor, calling Jane.
Jane promised to help her with anything she needed. Jane would sit with her in the meeting if that made Pamela comfortable. She assured the middle Evens that things would be fine and she'd come over first thing in the morning. Pamela paced her living room, waiting for her friend. She bolted to the door at the first ring.
Throwing open the door, she cried, "Jan!" Her angel stood with a bag of delicious-smelling food in her hands. She was Pam's beautiful life-saver. If Pamela squinted, she was positive Jane would have wings on her back. "Glorious~" She latched onto the other woman, then stiffened.
Behind her wonderful angel stood her brother, cringing at the sight. 'Jane doesn't let me hug her.' Ricky grumbled, face darkening. "Hi, Pam."
Pamela returned the glare. "Why're you here?!" Instinctively, she tightened her grip on Jane. She pulled Jane inside and tried slamming the door on Ricky, but failed.
To Pam's dismay, her little brother was stronger than her. Pushing the door open, Ricky stepped inside. "Good to see you too Pam." Ricky chimed sarcastically. A vein was popping out on his forehead.
"The feeling's not mutual!" Pamela threw back, linking her arm with Jane's. "I invited my sweet angel of the office here - not her stalker of a boss!"
Ricky blushed. "What you say!" A snigger brought their attention to the ravenette. Jane covered it up with a cough. "Jane!"
"My throat had a tickle." The secretary blatantly lied. She patted her chest as if to sell the act. Removing Pamela's arms, she offered up the food she brought. "Let's eat first before tackling the work. I'm not the best at this kind of thing, but I'll help you with whatever you need."
Now Pamela cried, but this time it was happy tears. "My wonderful angel!" Snatching Jane up a second time, she swung the younger around. "Can I marry you!" 'Seriously, why couldn't you have been a guy?'
Ricky felt a vein pop. That wasn't a joke to him and it made him jealous, seeing his sister casually touch his Jane. In the flash of light, he snatched Jane out of Pamela's clutches. "Stop touching her! Can't you see it's making her uncomfortable?"
'She's mine. Not yours, Pam. Mine.' In his silent rant, Ricky failed to practice what he preached. He pressed Jane against him. He held her head against his chest, defensively. He had recently admitted to himself he had feelings for the woman. He'll be damned if his sister stole Jane from him!
"Uh, I think you're making her uncomfortable." His sister pointed out.
Jane fixed her boss with a stony expression. It told Ricky that he had overstepped their boundaries. Quickly, he released her, watching her return her attention to Pamela. The two headed over to the living room.
"I need help choosing my best work," Pamela started. She grabbed some water for themselves. "Choosing drawings is easy. I need help finding a model of my own. None of my previous colleagues will help because of my - stunt." The tears came back. "I have no one else, Jane. Can you be my model?"
As Pamela pleaded, Jane set out the food. She didn't mind being photographed, but she wasn't photogenic. She wasn't sure how helpful she'd be, but with Pamela giving her that pleading puppy eyes, Jane couldn't refuse. She wanted the expressive model to succeed. "I'll do my best."
"Thank you!"
The two had forgotten about Ricky. He stood there, stunned by the easy flow of conversation between the women. He wasn't in the 'in' crowd. He hated how Pamela could easily gain Jane's support. What drew the two together, he wondered.
It felt unreal seeing Jane gentle to the older woman. It was as if Jane was Pam's mother, walking her through prom night. Ricky would've liked to be Jane's husband in that scenario, but she was painfully guarded around him. Her walls reached the height of skyscrapers, looming over Ricky Evens.
He wanted to tear those walls down; smash it to gravel. He had a taste of Jane Blair - the woman. He had peeked behind the office exterior she kept in place and it left him wanting more. He needed to see more.
"I'll be...here." The lawyer pouted as the woman left for Pam's room. Breathing out, Ricky plopped himself on the couch. Pulled out his phone, he texted his parents that their daughter was alive and well. He grumbled. "At this rate, I won't have a shot." He was already losing to his own sister!
Leaning his head on the cushion, Ricky stared at the ceiling, wishing for something to change. One idea came to mind. 'It'll be my golden birthday this year.' It was a while off, but maybe Ricky could invite Jane to celebrate with him. It was a long shot, but worth trying. 'I'll ask her today.'
Eventually, he became bored of waiting for the ladies to return. "How long does it take, to go through drawings?" Getting up, he strutted to his sister's room and barged in.
It was a terrible miscalculation. The women weren't reviewing drawings; Pamela was taking Jane's measurements and having the shorter female try on some clothes. Ricky walked in on Jane mid-change.
Her back was facing him. She had on a backless, off-the-shoulder mesh top that exposed an interesting secret Jane kept hidden. Jane had identical tattoos on the back of her shoulders. They were crows with their wings expanded and perched in cracked skulls that had flowers blooming out of them. Linking the images together were the words 'If I die young.'
It was sexy and Ricky couldn't focus on anything else, so Pamela helped him with that. "Don't enter a lady's room without knocking! What's wrong with you?!" She launched a boot at her brother's face, hitting him squarely between the eyes.
The impact threw him back, sending him to the floor. At record speed, his sister slammed the door. That's how he ended up going to the bathroom. The man needed to wash out the arousing image he had witnessed. That was easier said than done, he realized.
Tattoos had never been attractive to Ricky. Until now, marking one's own body for life had seemed mindless to the lawyer. Who knew that opinion would change quicker than a light switch? Ricky had to slap himself to stop from imagining where else Jane had tattoos. That secretary would be the death of him!
His sister and crush were in the living room when he returned. Jane sat on the couch as if she wasn't seen partially undressed by her boss. She was dressed in her normal attire. Her eyes remained fixed on Ricky's sister as they discussed schedules and ideas for photoshoots. Jane mentioned recruiting Quinn, if her schedule allowed it.
After the brainstorm came the cold shoulder. Aloof as ever, Jane bid the two siblings farewell. It was a mystery how she could remain deadpanned. It stabbed at the lawyer. It would be preferable if she yelled at Ricky.
"I can see the arrow sticking out of your chest." Pam's words dripped with sarcasm. She received no response. Her brother kept his focus on the door where Jane left. Rolling her eyes, she asked, "Why don't you hurry up and ask her out?"
It was a miracle her brother didn't get whiplash from the speed as his head snapped towards her. "What are you talking about?!" Ricky sputtered defensively. "
It's a normal reaction - stop making it weird..." His face dropped. "I'm not a creep...oh Lord...I can't believe I walked in on her." He needed a panic room. Just a place to fall to his knees and rock back and forth while debating about life.
Meanwhile, his lovely big sister merely watched his psychosis break with boredom. "Uh-huh. So it's just embarrassment and not ANYTHING more?" She clicked her tongue at the absence of response. "Come here." Pamela patted the cushion next to her.
Coming out of his inner crisis, Ricky snapped. "I'm not a dog."
Pam didn't miss a beat. "You could've fooled me with the puppy act you pull around Jane." Seeing her brother's face fall, she softened up. "Geez, get yourself together and answer honestly. Do you feel anything towards Jane?"
Sighing, her brother sat down. "Am I that obvious?" Pamela's expression told him it was. There was no use hiding it. Not that Ricky tried hard enough to - at least not enough with his sister. Twiddling his fingers, Ricky admitted to having some feelings for the raventte. "I may have squishy feelings for h-her."
Squishy was code for 'crushing' on someone. The Evens sisters came up with that code growing up when sharing some 'girl talk'. As their brother, naturally, Ricky picked up on that habit. Ricky felt it was easier using that code word with his sister than becoming mute from fear.
Nodding sagely, Pamela patted her baby brother's leg. She should've been more protective of her little brother. He's been through a lot with his Ex and it had changed her brother in some ways. He became more closed off to romantic endeavors: more cynical. Jane had changed that by just being Jane. How could Pamela disapprove of her new friend?
Jane exuberated light. Plus, after seeing Jane's tattoos, Pamela now knew who Jane had been back in high school. It'll be amazing to have the secretary as her sister-in-law. 'I'll make sure of it.' "Are you scared to ask her out?"
"Yes." How could he not be afraid? "Jane isn't the same as other girls. She doesn't throw herself at me - heck, I don't think she sees me as a man sometimes. I want to get close to her, but it's like there's a crevasse between us. I can't find a way to cross it?"
"That was pathetically sad." Pam blurted out, destroying their heartfelt moment. "Don't be so cynical. If all you need is a way to spend time with her -" She grinned sadistically. "Then allow me to help." She could think of some ways to bring the two together.
