He had lied to Delilah about heading to the cafe to receive the tapes. Tammy already emailed the video feed the day Jane was slapped. Ricky had watched it over and over, his anger boiling beneath the surface. Delilah only added fuel to the fire with those photos she concocted. Her trying to play the victim was the cherry on top.
Ricky couldn't comprehend how he remained collected when that woman flaunted those crocodile tears. The urge to toss that walking trash out was replaced by Jane's desire to handle this professionally. She didn't want trouble or for Ricky's reputation to be tarnished by Delilah's games.
The duo made a plan; that was the only thing keeping Ricky chained to civilization. If he could have it his way, he would have fired Delilah and threatened to do the same to the other subordinates if they so much as breathed funny with Jane.
If only Jane would let him.
Keeping his anger under wraps, Ricky made it to the cafe. He had taken Ted's secretary with him, Everett, as a witness while they gathered statements from the staff.
Back at the office, Delilah bit her nails. She furrowed her brows, clearly agitated by these unexpected turns of events. This was definitely all Jane's fault. The girl truly knew how to twist situations to turn in her favor. Now Delilah was going to lose her job and it was all because of that ugly duckling.
Delilah couldn't believe it. She worked too hard, making many friends she could count on, and accepting all those annoying dates from ugly men to take their work and ideas. She clawed her way to the top in life - so how could one woman toss her down?
She hated Jane.
That lady was a bad omen the moment she set foot in this firm.
'What to do? What to do?' Delilah eyed Ricky's now emptied office. His computer sat there, innocently left on. An idea formed. A very naughty idea.
To Delilah's great delight, not only had her boss left his computer on, but it was signed in to his email. Feeling confidence returning, she made herself comfortable in Rick's chair and began scrolling. There had to be some juicy dirt she could dig up. After all, it was pathetically clear her boss held affections for Jane.
He was determined to clear her name.
Besides, Delilah was going to be fired anyway so 'Why not?' A sly grin formed on the disillusioned female face. 'Why not drag them both with me?'
Jane helped Mimi pack her things. The petite girl was handling the suspension much better than Jane thought. She honestly thought Mimi would go into another crying fit and get clingy again. Aside from the occasional sniffle, Mimi softly smiled and thanked Jane.
"My mother will be disappointed in me when I tell her about this." Melancholy, Mimi wiped a single tear that fell. "But at least I'm not fired."
Jane nodded, feeling for the younger girl. "You're going to be ok." She stated as she carefully packed the last item in Mimi's box. "I can carry this for you."
"Thank you, Jane."
Eyes followed the two as they walked out the room. From there, whispers gathered like a cloud, only growing louder with their gossip. "It makes sense, now." A group of girls spoke among themselves. "If she's capable of murder and walking free, then seducing the CEO of a company is nothing."
"Guys, I'm legit scared of working near her now. She was creepy before, now she's downright terrifying!"
"I think we're already on her bad side...what if she has a list? Will she plan to kill us?"
The group of girl jolted apart at the slam of a door. Ted had read the email that his boss forwarded and couldn't believe what was in the file. Also, why would Ricky forward this to the company?! His first instinct was to call Ricky, but then he remembered that his fellow lawyer and friend was no where in the office at the moment.
Delilah was the only one there and Ted couldn't remember if Ricky shut off his computer before he left. Rushing out his office, Ted could already sense the tension rising in the air. The office had seen the document. The damage within was now out of his control. 'Crap!'
"Where's Jane?" He demanded. If he could get to Jane, he could send her home before she faced this humiliation. Then he'll contact Ricky.
"She left with Mimi." A make employee answered.
Ted hurried, praying to catch up with the girls before it was too late. He mumbled to himself. "When I said I wanted drama, this wasn't what I meant."
Ted caught up with Jane in the nick of time. She was heading back inside the firm after helping Mimi load up her stuff. Mimi promised to text Jane when she got home and update her about her talk with her mother before leaving. Jane watched until Mimi was able to get in her car and drive off, in case Delilah showed up to confront the younger girl.
A part of Jane was hoping for that, then she could have a reason to give Delilah a well-deserved etiquette lesson. One the man-child would never forget.
"Don't do it, Jane." She reminded herself, stretching a bit before turning to head back inside. She barely got to the door when Ted rushed out. Before she could ask him what happened, Ted spun her back towards the parking lot and escorted her to her car. "What are you doing?! Ted?"
"I'm going to explain, just not in the firm." With the most serious face, one that unnerved Jane, Ted quietly begged her to trust him. "You can't go back to the office right now; hell's about to break loose."
As promised, once they were in Jane's car, Ted told her everything that happened merely minutes ago. Jane felt all blood leave her face. "That can't be..."
"Go home, Jane. Until Ricky and I can deescalate this, go home."
'Go home? Go home and do what? What's waiting for me at home except spewing over this?' "I want to see the email." She needed to see the email: see proof. She saw her superior's hesitation. "I need to see it, Ted...please."
How rare it was for the proud lioness to say please. Any other time, Ted would have pounced with his teasing. However, this rarity was no laughing matter and Ted felt conflicted with making a decision. 'It is her document. She has all rights to see it.' Sighing, he took out his phone and logged into his work email.
Jane held her breathe as she took the phone. She saw Ricky's name on the sender line, then she scrolled and clicked the attached file. Looking back at her were the vacant eyes of her younger self: The child who couldn't see the past the age of nineteen. She was dead inside, desperate to feel alive - to be loved - to not hurt anymore...to the point she took another's life. She just wanted to be normal.
With shaking hands, she quickly returned the phone to Ted. "I believe you that Ricky wouldn't forward that." The guy was scarily too sweet on her to do that, so that didn't concern her. What concerned her was, "But did he see this?"
If he had...what does Ricky Evens think of her now?
The thought made her queasy.
