Mama Jane.
They say your life changes when you have a child. Jane wondered if that was true for aunts as well. Since the birth of her nephew, Jane's whole world turned right side up, and for his sake, Jane intends to keep it that way.
Lyon Leo was Jane's reason for existence. Once Jane learned of the abuse her baby nephew endured at her sister's hand, she stepped up as Lyon's guardian. Thus, Jane forsaken her life as a street fighter and thief. Because of her nephew, Jane put up with her secretary job.
Jane will endure anything for her baby lion. This sentiment was steeled as little hands wrapped themselves around her, seemingly trying to squeeze her. Innocent hazel eyes gleamed up at her, melting Jane's usually steeled heart. "Mama Jane!"
'How are you able to make me bend so easily, my cub?' Jane leaned down and kissed her nephew's forehead. "How are you my little lion?" She asked, petting the wild mane of the seven-year-old.
Though Aubrey had given birth to the young boy, some could argue that Lyon shared more resemblance to Jane and Hal, rather than Aubrey. There were instances where Jane had been told how her 'son' was a spitting image of her (minus the eyes). Lyon also had the habit of referring to Jane as his mama, which the brunette hadn't the heart to correct.
As young as Lyon was, he was a smart lad. His dad and auntie had never lied about Lyon's mother. Of course, they couldn't tell Lyon why his birth mother was a dead-beat at the moment. The two summarized it as "Your mother is sick right now. Very sick."
Lyon was sharp though. He got the feeling his mother just didn't want him. That did break the kid's heart a little, but his Auntie Jane was there for him. Lyon couldn't think of a time in his seven years of living when his mama Jane wasn't present. All the pictures in his house proved his auntie was always there, taking care of him!
One even showed a baby Lyon pulling on Jane's earrings - that was the day Jane learned how feral babies could get! Also, never wear dangling, sparkling jewelry around a child! As far as Lyon was concerned, his auntie was his mama, and belonged with his daddy and him forever!
That possessiveness grew the day his auntie picked him up from school. Originally, Jane would take the rest of the day off from work and treat Lyon to an outing. However, the workload this week has been hectic, thanks to her boobs-for-brains coworker. Delilah was in charge over the weekend, but she was useless. Nothing got done and some clients had never gotten a follow-up call. Jane clenched her teeth thinking of the piles of paperwork that greeted her that morning.
'Why did Mr. Evens keep that numbskull around?' Jane refrained from cursing in front of her nephew. Thanks to her, I have to waste my time working instead of spending it with my cub. She lamented as she led Lyon inside the office.
Now, that was a sight to behold and the office found itself having to a second glance when the brunettes entered. Ricky, himself, rubbed his eyes, not believing his sight. Jane had informed him she needed to step out for a moment, but she didn't mention anything about bringing a CHILD back when she returned.
That can't be HER kid...can it? Ricky hoped in some weird way, Jane had brought a random kid here. 'Maybe the kid was lost and Jane didn't want to leave him on his own...or perhaps she kidnapped a child - wait - that's not right.' It was clear, however, that the young boy was related to Jane. He had her face shape and hair color - also the fact he called her "Mama Jane! Is this your office?"
Ricky felt a stroke rising. "Mama?" He hadn't realized he rushed to the door and screeched that aloud. He coughed, embarrassed at how nosy he seemed. Also, how Jane glared at him intensely. "Ah, I mean," Blushing, Ricky approached his secretary and her child. "Welcome back Ms. Blair. I see you brought a visitor. Hello, young man." He plastered on his most welcoming smile and held out his hand. "What's your name?"
Ricky would be lying if he said the boy's ardent stare didn't rival that of his secretary. The uncanniness was irksome. 'I'm not intimidated...not one bit.' When it became clear the child wasn't going to shake his hand, Ricky dropped his arm. "Shy, I see." Facing his secretary, Ricky asked her to enter his office.
"Mama Jane," Lyon tugged at her arm. "Can I draw at your desk? I'm bored."
"Of course, you can, my cub." Jane petted the boy's hair. Seeing that soft smile brought Ricky back to the time he was at the bull game. There was a pang, seeing that sweet smile directed towards someone who wasn't him. The pang grew when Jane turned back to him - that softness gone.
'I should get my heart checked.' Ricky made a mental note, chalking the pang up to a health problem. He allowed Jane to step into his office first before following and closing the door. "I didn't know you had a son, Ms. Blair." Trust me, Ricky racked his brain, trying to remember if Jane ever mentioned having a kid. "How come you never told me?" 'And she does overtime to boot - wait - does that mean she IS married?'
"Must I divulge such information?" Jane replied, not getting why her boss was weirded out by her nephew. 'Does he think I can't have a family?' Now that was offensive.
"If I knew you had a husband and kid, Ms. Jane, I wouldn't keep you here so late." 'No wonder you hate me!' "I apologize."
Jane rolled her eyes. Having her boss act so...formal with her was welcoming, but a bit concerning as well. Though Ricky spoke considerately, his face was solemn, and Jane bet her boss didn't realize how downcast his expression was.
"Now you're apologizing? What about my car you puked in!?" She was still upset at that. "And why does your face look like the poster child for a novella? Also, what's this about a husband?" 'Is he mocking me?' "Is there a problem with bringing my nephew to work?"
"Nephew?" Ricky gasped, wide-eyed.
"Yes, MY nephew." Jane illiterated.
"But...he called you mama," Ricky pointed out, unsure if he heard right.
Jane rolled her eyes openly. "That's his name for me. Mama Jane." She usually disliked pet names or showing any sort of softness in front of her peers, but Lyon was an exception. Mama Jane was her nephew's first words and it plunged Cupid's arrows straight into her heart. She'll die defending that title. "You got a problem with that, BOSS?"
"Of course not!" Ricky raised his arms in defense. Jane looked ready to karate chop him. "Don't hurt me!" That last bit was meant to stay in his head, but oh well. He relaxed as Jane huffed, calming down herself. "I didn't mean to offend - I'm shocked is all. Forgive me?" Ricky grinned when Jane side-eyed him and answered with 'Fine.' "So, can I ask why you brought your nephew today?" He asked, feeling the pang in his chest grow lighter. Still going to get that checked out.
Meanwhile, Lyon sat in his aunt's chair, doodling. However, secretly the boy stared at the two adults in the office. The kid hated Ricky Evens. Although he was only seven, Lyon could see the gaze Ricky gave his mama Jane. It was the same gaze those gross girls in his class give their crushes: the cootie eyes.
It was also the same gaze Lyon saw on his daddy whenever his daddy talked with his mama Jane. Lyon only liked that cootie gaze then, because his daddy and mama Jane belonged together. They both care for him and love him and they get along so it's only logical. 'Mama Jane belongs with Daddy.' The thought of some stranger trying to take his mama away from him and his dad angered the seven-year-old.
"I'll protect her, Daddy," Lyon promised in a whisper. "I won't let that man steal her from us." At that, Lyon finished his drawing, scratching out the face of the stick figure he drew of Ricky Evens.
Ricky felt a foreboding chill run down his spine. 'Ah, when did it get chilly in here?' "So that's what happened." He nodded in understanding.
"Yes." Jane had finished explaining her brother-in-law's work situation. "I'll be taking him home later."
"Alright." Ricky wanted to ask about Lyon's mother and why she wasn't picking up her son. But knowing his secretary, Jane would clamp up, and ignore him. She wasn't the kind of person to open up, though Ricky wished at times she would let him in her world.
He didn't understand why, but Ricky wanted to know Jane. He wanted to take even a glimpse into her mind and see behind the mask she glued on. Maybe it was his curiosity or Ricky's nosiness. It felt almost like a pull but Ricky had yet to realize what it meant.
"Ms. Blair," Without thinking, Ricky reached for Jane's hand but was interrupted by little hands knocking on the door. He blinked, suddenly aware of what he almost did. 'What is wrong with me?'
Jane opened the door and got tackled by her adorable nephew. "Mama Jane, see what I drew!" Lyon proudly offered up the drawing. "I made it for the mister!"
"Oh my, how sweet." Ricky's ear perked up at hearing that Jane's nephew drew a picture for him.
"Here mister!" Lyon skipped up to his auntie's boss. "I drew this for you! Do you like it?"
"Oh, how -" Ricky abruptly paused, seeing the drawing. It was a stick figure with its face massacred. "Nice..." Now he understood where that sudden chill had come from.
"Do you like it?" Lyon kept his smile, but it didn't seem so innocent anymore.
"Uh, yes. I like it. Thank you."
Lyon skipped back to his aunt and hugged her. "Mama Jane, are you coming over tonight?" Although the child asked his aunt that, Lyon pointedly looked at Ricky. Ricky could see the kid had Jane's smirk as well.
"Yes I am, but I can't spend the night again." When it came to her baby nephew, Jane seemed to have a blind spot.
Ricky felt uncomfortable listening to the conversation. He watched his secretary and her minion walk out the door. 'The kid hates me.' That was further proven when Jane sat at her desk and Liam sat in her lap, hugging her. He turned to face Ricky and that malicious smile of his had widened.
Ricky Evens: Age 29 with an appearance that can rival the world's best models felt threatened by a seven-year-old kid. Imagine that.
