Chase Hennessey was given the job of dealing with dead people- deciding if they should actually die or not and such- in exchange for immortality. At the time when she was offered this, she felt it was a great deal, after all, she had nothing to live for in the overworld. But, after spending who knows how long in the realm of the dead, she brings over a girl without thinking.

The girl sits and chats with Chase for a while when she enters- something not many have done- and the two become good friends. Chase visits this girl, Alyssa, daily, and soon Chase's feelings go from "this girl is pretty cool," to, "I think I love this girl," and Chase becomes determined to find a way to bring Alyssa Dunham back to life
