Cupcake

Hello, ready for a sweet one-shot, by Eve (2901_a)?

Though it is a bit too long. I hope that you don't get bored when you are just through a quarter of the one-shot.

Nevertheless, Let's give it a hit!

——————————

Cupcake | May x Drew

The bell chimed softly; indicating that a new customer has arrived. It was Cupcake week in the world LaRousse City, Hoenn Region; couples hand in hand; children running around, and the sweet smell of freshly baked cupcakes filled the atmosphere.

Solidad immediately rushed inside the kitchen as she yelled, "Part-timer, go greet the customer!"

"Yes." The reply came almost immediately as the part-timer, a girl with rosette short hair; ran towards the front counter as soon as the customer reached there.

"Hello", she greeted them with a sweet smile, "How may I help you today?"

She slowly looked at the couple, observing them from top to bottom before returning a sweet smile as she watched them bicker on what and who should say. It took the couple a few more minutes before they settled on red-velvet; vanilla topped, triple cupcake with a caramel macchiato for the girl.

"It will be up in no time. May I have your name so that I can inform you about your order?", the part-timer asked and watched the girl hit her mate on the shoulder to get his attention before shrugging and giving her name.

"Call Mr. Grasshead, please."

The part-timer giggled at the received name, but still nodded and was about to go when the girl tugged at her uniform sleeve. She turned around to face the couple asking if there was anything else they needed, but instead,

"What is your name though? Also, please call the order upon Drew, not Mr. Grasshead", the girl asked. "It's Brianna. Thank you for asking, and telling me", Brianna, the part-timer replied sweetly and immediately rushed inside as she heard Solidad calling her; while waving back to the couple.

The couple then went ahead and sat on a table near the window; facing each other. It was so quiet and the cafe was filled with soft snickers of the other couples; mixed with a hint of cupcakes and coffees.

"Say, Drew?", the girl asked as she diverted her gaze from the window to the boy in front of her. He lifted his head and replied, "Hm?"

"Have you ever wondered what will happen to our friendship, if the media keeps on treating and reminding us that we are rivals and–" She was stopped mid-sentence as Drew finished for her.

"Not friends, right?" She nodded; her eyes slowly lacking the glistening which it once had before the conversation turned gloomy.

Drew heaved a pack of air slowly as he enveloped the girl's tiny hands in his' as he spoke, "Listen, May. It doesn't matter to me what the media says and wants us to know. The only thing I care about, right now, is that you are with me. You are my friend, in spite of our rivalry in the Coordinating world. The media can cook up anything they want because they want some spice. Because they don't want to lose their best rivals due to another secret pact of friendship. It doesn't matter to me."

"But– what if–"

"I don't care. I would even lose to you and end our rivalry if it means that we can stay as friends forever. Whether you like it or not, I want to be stuck with you like this forever" Drew squeezed her hands softly as May kept her eyes on him, listening to him with all her attention. "If not more than friends" Drew muttered under his breath slowly; not wanting the girl he admired for the past few months to know his little secret.

"But– yeah. You're right, no matter what the media is up to, I am not letting that affect our friendship. Not now, not never." May smiled at him softly, as he again looked up as their eyes met.

Captivating and alluring green jewels stared deeply into the deep and calm blue sea of secrets.

But before anything more could happen than starring, Brianna arrived immediately as she greeted them, once again. "Here is your order, Sir."

Drew and May immediately shot back to their position as Drew quickly gave Brianna a sharp nod. She was about to go when May asked, "Weren't you going to call us, Brianna?"

"Actually, I did. But neither of you responded so I brought your order to your table." She replied softly and flashed a smile before continuing, "Sorry if I interrupted something important."

And with a wink thrown towards May, Brianna rushed back to her place; leaving the couple to think about what just happened.

"Uh..."

"Let's eat!" May excitedly took a cupcake from the plate, as she started biting it softly. The soft cocoa flavor mixed with the slight acidity of vanilla and buttermilk threw fireworks inside her mouth and almost immediately she released a content moan.

Placing it now empty wrapper down, she took her Caramel Macchiato filled cup. Slowly observing its rim, she saw a small pair of purple hearts hugging each other. And subconsciously, she smiled. "I wish if we were like this..."

"Hmm?" Drew looked up from his phone; confused.

"Ah, nothing!" May waved her hands in front of her, brushing the topic aside.

"I am sure, it is something", a smirk played upon Drew's lips as he kept his phone aside and leaned over the table; inching closer to May. "Now come on, tell me. What is it, Bandanna Brain?"

"Uh... Really! It is nothing. Nothing..." She replied, her face slowly getting redder by the passing second. May couldn't have believed that the boy in front of her was flirting with her, right now. In the damn cafe. Plus, he was calling her by a nickname. A long lost nickname; Bandanna Brain.

Suddenly, Drew's eyes flickered to the cup in May's hand. He saw the same picture of the hearts, but not completely so he immediately took the cup from hands and examined the picture.

"Is it this?"

"Whatever, Green-grape."

He pouted in response to her and leaned back on his seat; his hands leaving the cup on the table and going up to thread his unnatural locks back. The sight in front of May made her think about how someone could make the two words 'cute' and 'sexy' line up in just one sentence.

Was it his pouting? Or was it the way his hands swiped his front locks back?

Either way, she was already on the verge of losing her sanity. But she cannot do that, now can she? In the cafe, in front of Drew. It would be a straight affirmation to her feelings towards him. And the media could even take advantage of it. So it was better for her to behave properly.

Everything went back to normal after the sudden teasing, and the two were quietly enjoying each other's company while occasionally stealing glances; enjoying their drinks and some sweet in-between little talks.

It would have stayed like that until someone, in particular, had not decided to interrupt their friendly-date.

"Oh my, what do I see here? May and Drew."

The man in front of them had just rushed his way into the cafe the moment he saw the two. He was clothed in the silky black fabric; from top to bottom topping it with a red tie to finish his reporter look. His lips were slightly curved upwards as he continued to speak.

"What are the two famous rivals doing here, having a sweet cupcake-catchup, eh. Aren't you two supposed to treat each other with pure rage and disgust to prove your rivalry?"

His question seemed to have gained the attention of the rest of the customers and they responded with several gasps and unexpected whispers. Not soon after his question; a swarm of paparazzi ran inside the cafe; knocking over a few customer's orders and halted right behind the well-mannered man.

"I see, Jonathan. You have found them." One of the reporters; a little shorter than Jonathan (the one who approached May and Drew earlier and first) spoke with a grin.

"Yes. And very well caught up they are. Do you, perhaps, want some answers and revelations to the unanswered and doubted questions of yours?" He agreed to the reporter and turned around to ask the rest of the group. The reply was thrown almost immediately and the cafe was now in chaos as every reporter was asking questions even before May and Drew could get the time to process things out.

"Yes. I have several to get answers."

"Also, because of this. It even seems like they will end up disappointing us."

"What will happen to their rivalry if their secret meetings continue?"

"Come to think of it, are they doing secret meetings/greetings like this ever since they met?"

"Or has it been a recent activity?"

"It could mean something else too, now can it not?"

The questions didn't seem to stop and May was already getting fed up with them. She knew that they were nosy but never in the million years was she expecting them to stalk her, rather them, like this. Were they so desperate to the answers that they would fall this low to even stalk the famous coordinators?

Drew, on the other hand, had a concerned look. He was concerned about May; about how is she going to react and how will they got out of this situation.

More importantly how to answer the questions which the paparazzi was showering at them like hailstones.

"May, let's try to sneak out 'till they are busy with their questions with Jonathan."

He whispered as they stood up from their seats trying to move out only to get stopped by Jonathan. He was not going to let them go, not without getting the answers which he desperately wanted to hear. Jonathan, in the first place, never wanted the two to end up together. He believed that the only way media would get immense attention was to give them an attention worth rivalry. And the rivalry between May and Drew paid it off. So he never wanted them to end up together.

It wasn't his fault that he was supposed to drive them apart. But his work had him do it. So he didn't have any other choice to go with it.

"Well, well, well, you two are not going before you actually prove us your rivalry."

May and Drew hesitated and they tried to resist but the way the reporters were behaving there was no way to get away from them. They ended up agreeing to stay and answer their questions. But what they didn't know was that the reporters wanted something more than just answers.

They wanted them to fight. A Real Fight.

"C'mon, your rivalry is something which needs more fight."

"Yes, and we don't see you two fighting or something."

"Ah, right. And now don't tell us that you two are planning to end this rivalry–"

"–There is no way we would let you!"

Almost as if the reporters were demanding their needs in May and Drew; it was already enough for Jonathan. So he suddenly snapped.

"Stop it, you guys! We need to do this in a professional way, not the citizen-king way."

And then everyone went silent. The cafe was never as silent as it was now; all the customers had their attention drawn into the scene taking place in front of them. Brianna and Solidad were watching everything from the counter. They knew that things like this never really happened too much but this time; it was in their cafe. And they didn't know what to do, so they kept their talks out of the situation.

"Now, Jess. You throw your question." Jonathan ordered a female reporter as she came to the front; the camera-man following behind her.

"Well, I have a question for May." She turned to face May; completely ignoring the fact that Drew was practically sticking to May's side. "Do you know the mask which your famous-rival wears?"

Drew was caught off-guard. He didn't know what mask were they talking about. There was never a situation where he had to act like he was putting a fake-mask in front of the audience.

"Uh, no?"

"Well, you should now." Jess straightened her tie and cleared her throat in an attempt to make the point for tense. "You see, He has been using your friendship with him."

"What the-" "No! I haven't!"

May was about to disagree with Jess but Drew beat her to it and snapped at the reporter. He was about to go and slap the reporter but Jonathan has blocked him by placing a hand on his chest as she pushed Drew a little away from Jess. Drew grunted angrily until May placed a hand on his shoulder in an attempt to calm him down. His eyes slowly flickered towards her and soon his breathing evened out. "Sorry, May." He mumbled to her and she shook her head, denying. "No, it's fine. I know it isn't true." She whispered back and turned her attention towards Jess.

"Miss, I do not think he is the kind of person who would go on breaking people's trust." May politely objected Jess's point and flashed a smile to other reporters.

Jess didn't back away and threw another question at May. "Well, it might be with you but earlier when he was just into Coordinating, he sure did broke a fight with one of the famous Coordinators of that time." She turned a little to face Drew. Her lips twitched upwards in victory when she saw the shocked expression on his face, upon hearing a past incident.

The reason for that fight was not Drew but the other, famous Coordinator. He was the one who had been smuggling in some illegal drugs to give his opponents Pokemon so that he could easily win. Once Drew had found out about this, he wasn't sure what to do and so he asked the Coordinator straight away. When the Coordinator didn't give answers correctly Drew decided to threaten him but the Coordinator had already struck him in the face and that was how a fight had broken out. It was a shame that the Coordinator was left out and Drew was the one being blamed for putting up a fight with such a pure-hearted, famous Coordinator.

"But that doesn't mean that he goes on picking up fights, now does he?" May retorted back, her voice growling like an angry Growlith.

"But- May- but he-" Jess tried to form words when she was hit by May's cold and angry voice. It seemed to her that her voice just vanished in thin air when May got angry. "Jess. Apologize." Jonathan ordered to her and she immediately bent down and apologized to May and Drew. After that, she turned away and rushed out of the cafe. The other reporters had come because Jess dragged them to keep her company and also because it shouldn't look like catching May and Drew together was a small pep talk or something.

And as they saw Jess leave the cafe, the others looked at Jonathan nervously as if asking if they could leave or not. When they received a frustrated nod from him, they all rushed out of the cafe leaving everyone confused inside.

"Sorry for her and the others, but still though, May, do you never doubt his tactics of deceiving someone?" Jonathan faced May and his facial expressions slowly changed to one of concern as his eyes flickered over to Drew who now had his head hung low.

"No-"

Someone suddenly barged in through the doors of the cafe, cutting May off.

Too many people for just getting caught by the media.

"Oh, there you are!" It was a woman in her early twenties, looking slightly younger than Drew. She rushed her way to May and Drew and immediately latched her hands on Drew's collar, yanking him back and forth with anger evident in her eyes.

"I swear, you Pricky Deceiver! How could you just run away for almost six years after what happened!? Huh?" Her yelled continued and Drew did nothing to defend himself, shocking both May and Jonathan.

"D-Drew? What is this?" May sputtered out the words, her eyes staring into nothingness. Drew looked up at the woman who was struggling the life out of him.

"Oh, May." Suddenly the woman dropped her hands from Drew's collar and faced May with a sweet smile, "I am Ruby, Drew's ex-rival." She then hugged May and slowly whispered in her ears, "Please, don't get too close with this Asshole. You might end up getting hurt, honey. And I don't want that."

May was completely confused as to what the woman- Ruby, was saying to her. Why would Drew hurt her? Had he something so bad in his past with Ruby which made Ruby react such even today when she found him?

Ruby pulled back and patted May's back, turning to face Jonathan and she spoke, "John, please leave. Things are way too rough here. And I don't think the owner would want any media here."

He got the hint and left with a simple bow as an apology.

Ruby then pulled May and Drew out of the cafe, dragging them down the streets and towards her apartment. She knew what everything was about, and she really wanted May to know about the Previous Drew. How he was and what he had done. It should be brought into May's light so that she could be cautious about her relationship with Drew.

And Ruby wanted to be that person to help May with that.

After some time, they reached Ruby's apartment and she opened the door, guiding the couple inside.

"Please sit on the couch, I'll be right back."

May and Drew watched as Ruby disappeared behind one of the doors which lined the ground of her apartment. Her apartment was big. Okay maybe, Huge.

To the front of the entrance, was a wide staircase which forked two ways, leading to the second floor. A ceiling long window above the forged part of the stairs allowed the morning light to scatter on the carpet which covered the footing.

Towards the right of the stairs was the living area, all wide and fancy. There was a huge TV attached to the wall and the wall across had a pair of long sliding windows that were left open. The air gushing in had the curtains flowing like a river. To the front of the TV was an L shaped couch, neatly covered with velvet. There was a table in between the couch and the TV with a small pot of flowers and a few magazines lying on top. There was a slightly large chandelier hanging from the ceiling, casting the lovely shadow of nets.

Towards the left of the stairs, were a series of doors. One of which was left ajar, the one inside which Ruby went. That side of the stairs had nothing much to explore rather than the number of portraits that hang on the wall.

May and Drew, without waiting much, went and sat on the couch. Each on the farther end. May suddenly started feeling uncomfortable around Drew after the episode through which she went through.

She just didn't know now how to feel when she is near him, so she decided on staying a little away from him.

They waited and after a minute or so, Ruby walked into the living area with a tray containing two cups of chocolate mousse and one cup of steaming tea. She placed the tray in the table and sat beside May handing her one of the chocolate mousses cups.

"I think he should be the one to tell you about this," Ruby spoke to May and then her eyes darted towards Drew who was seated far away from them and her next words were directed towards him as she spoke, "Shouldn't you, Drew?"

"I- uh, yeah," Drew said as he turned slightly to face the two girls. He continued, "May, remember when Jessica mentioned about me getting into a fight long back? That was actually the other Coordinator- Rupert. He was bringing in drugs to drug his opponents' Pokemon so he could win. When I heard, I immediately confronted him and he declined the first time. But when I mentioned that I could even call the police to investigate him he threw a punch and that was how the fight came up."

Drew looked at May but her face showed no emotion. She blankly stared at him and he sighed, continuing, "I didn't leave him though, but I had to stop because he threatened me to ruin Ruby's image. He threatened me that he would wreak her and her life. I couldn't let that happen to my rival-sister. How could I? And so I had to leave the place and never bring that topic up. I had to make everyone over there forget about me. So I left without even tell Ruby about this..."

"Drew..." Ruby whispered as tears filled her eyes. She never knew this was the reason for him disappearing without even her knowing. She never knew she was the reason for him disappearing.

"I am sorry Ruby, I really am. But I couldn't just expose him when your life was at stake. You were and are my sister. I could never let anyone wreak you. Let alone hungrily look at you. And he was the one doing that to you. He was the one who was attracted to you and wanted a reason to get you under him. And when I found out about his drug-dealing he took that as his chance and pulled you into the conversation." Drew reasoned helplessly as tears streamed down his cheeks. He never knew this was how he would end up telling the two important girls in his life this story of his past.

"Oh Drew..." May whispered softly when she saw him crying and immediately hugged him tightly, not letting him go. His hands wrapped around her waist and back and he slowly cried on her shoulder as he continued, "And s-so, I left the place and went to a hotel. Remember May the beach where we met? I was staying at that hotel for over a week and when I heard about a contest being held nearby, I thought why not go out and get ready for a fresh new start. With a new personality. And then I met you. You were practicing with your Beautifly with the frisbees. And then our journey began... I am sorry I didn't tell you or Ruby about anything of my past. I just couldn't bring myself to. I was afraid that Rupert might be watching me from somewhere so I kept shut. I am really sorry. I really am."

"Oh my, I think that was why I saw Rupert a few weeks ago looking for you Drew..." Ruby said and Drew jerked his head up from May's shoulder.

"What?"

"But don't worry, he is under arrest due to an explosion which he caused in one of his opponents' rented house." She smiled at him and the three hugged each other.

"I am really glad that that bastard is now behind the bars and that he didn't even touch my sister," Drew mumbled.

"What if I say that he kind of barged into my house a couple of days ago and tried to force himself on me?" May asked remembering the incident.

"He didn't, because you surely would've given him a tight and tough return gift. I know you, you are a tough and athlete girl." He smiled and softly kissed her cheek. She didn't suppose he would do that out of nowhere but still let it slide, making a mental note.

Better get him to confess to me or else Ash might punch him sooner or later.

FINALLY

The One-shot is over! I am really tired... This took me over a month to set up a plot and put it into writing.

I hope that this doesn't disappoint you because there are not many DrewxMay lovey-dovey scenes. It is actually a one-shot which shows how they are, because love isn't fast-forwarded or something like that.

It takes time to bloom between them. And I wanted to make a one-shot to showcase Drew's past and how he ended up at that hotel and how he met May there. The reason for him being at that hotel.

I just felt like he should also have a past. But I didn't know how to put it up. And when I remembered that one scene in Pokemon where Soledad says that Drew cried when he lost his first match or something (when he was little) I found this idea.

I really hope now that you enjoyed this one-shot!!
