"Katie, I know you work with pegasi and all, but are you sure about this?" Travis asked, glancing uneasily at the saddle and horse Katie had readied for him. Her family apparently rode horses through the mountains here in Montana all the time, but that didn't mean Travis wasn't allowed to be skeptical.

"Yes I'm sure. Now Ares up and come on. Cali won't steer you wrong." Katie said, gesturing to the white and tan Appaloosa that Travis was so reluctant to mount.

"How can you know that unless you're a child of Poseidon like Percy? Can you talk to horses?" he challenged.

"Travis Philip Stoll. If you do not get on that horse this minute-" Katie began sternly, but she needed not finish.

"Yes ma'am!" Travis said, climbing into the saddle. He gripped the reins and looked at her for confirmation that it wasn't about to explode on him.

"There we go! That wasn't so hard, now was it?" Katie teased, whipping the reins a bit to get started.

"Hey-wait! How am I supposed to drive this thing?" Travis shouted after her.

Katie smirked and gave a soft whistle without looking back, and Travis's exclamation of surprise confirmed Cali had followed her command. Soon Travis was next to her, gripping the reins and saddle so hard his knuckles were white.

They rode for an hour or so until Katie stopped the horses by a tall, ancient looking, oak tree. She nimbly dismounted, and turned just in time to see Travis flail and fall face first to the ground.

As he got up, brushing himself off, spitting out dirt, and smiling despite himself at laughing daughter of Demeter, he made a promise.
