Cuts and Bruises
Sh*t.
I was a complete and total idiot. So stupid. I wanted to kick myself in the balls. Yet again, I was paying the consequences for not paying attention.
I watched sullenly as my pretty blue Subaru was towed away on the back of a tow truck. That car was my baby! I had been the proud owner of that automobile for a total of 4 years! I had paid for it all on my own, it had taken me the whole of my highschool career to save up enough money for it. What had taken so long to get was gone in a flash.
I supposed I'd have to go to the tow company and pay the stupid fine to get my car back. It was an easy mistake that I had made, really! I just accidentally parked in a no parking zone, but I was too busy to notice the signs.
What exactly was I busy with that morning? Oh yeah. I was late, so when I got my coffee, I hadn't screwed the lid on tight enough. So when I took a sip, too distracted pondering on the similarities between the children's movie The Lion King and the play Hamlet to notice the lopsided lid, it spilled all over my lap.
It burned like a b_tch, so I had hurriedly parked in the nearest parking spot, which just so happened to be a no parking spot. Whoops.
On top of all that fine dandy sh*t, I had been the last one to check out other than the janitors that evening. I was too caught up in finishing my report on a story to notice everyone leaving. It happened often, but today it didn't work in my favor.
It was well past eight in the evening, when my workday was usually done, almost 9:30 according to my cheap phone. Most people left at 7 either way, since that was technically when the work day was over. In the bitter chill of the fall, the sun had set ages ago and I would be surrounded in a ripe darkness if not for the lamp posts.
I shoved my hands in my pockets, pulling out a cigarette. I dangled it between my lips, cupping my hand over the end to light it.
I took a deep drag before starting on my journey home. My cramped apartment wasn't too far away from my work place, only about two and a half miles. Still, not exactly a short afternoon stroll for a lazy guy like me. Whatever.
Puffing on my cig, I was pulled back into memory lane. In truth, I hated cigarettes, thought they were disgusting, but I was absolutely addicted on the nasty flavor they left in my mouth and the buzz they left me with. I only started smoking because of an ex of mine a few years back. He got me hooked on them.
I wondered whatever happened to him. He wasn't exactly the best of my exes, but all my exes were douchebags that treated me like sh•t and did all kinds of stupid stuff. I was attracted to jerks, for some godforsaken reason. Anyway, that dude, I think his name was Jeffrey? Something like that.
Well, he always thought it was funny to smoke right in my face and watch me squirm before making me try them myself.
And here I was now. A dedicated smoker for going on two years now. Ah well.
I passed by my favorite Cafe and contemplated going in for a bite to eat before deciding against it. I had burned a big enough hole in my wallet this week, and it was only going to get bigger after I paid to get my car back. Guess I was eating more leftover tuna casserole. Yay.
I chuckled dryly, smoke curling from my lips. I hated tuna, it was absolutely disgusting in my opinion. But you know, as a broke 24-year-old magazine editor, I would take what I could get.
Especially when it was given to me freely from my slightly nosy neighbor, Margaret, who exchanged it for some gossip.
I smashed the end of my cigarette against a trashcan I was passing by, tossing it in. With my urges met, I continued on strolling home.
I couldn't wait to get home and snuggle up in my warm bed, especially with how tired I was lately. I stifled a yawn just thinking about it.
My heart deflated in my chest as I remembered the events of last night. I had caught my most recent boyfriend, well, now ex, f_cking some b_tch. In my apartment. I had kicked him out, throwing all of his stuff out as well and spent the rest of the evening crying and watching gay p_rn.
I blinked away the tears that threatened to well up in my eyes. I was not going to cry in public. I wasn't some pansy, I needed to get a hold of myself.
I shook my head, turning the corner, mentally debating pulling out another cigarette.
That's when the world froze and I was thrusted back into reality, out from the depths of my mind.
I had stumbled in between two furious male hunks, both of them towering over me, which was saying something. I was 6 feet tall, not some short stock. But these guys... They were huge.
And both of them happened to be throwing fists at each other. Just so happens I was caught in between them. I barely had time to let my eyes widen and mouth open in a gasp before two pairs of fists rained down on me. I crumpled to the ground, groaning.
As I curled into fetal position, shuddering and trying to crawl away, I heard two mouths let out strings of colorful curses. I groaned, pain blooming where the two studs' fists had made contact with my body.
At that point in time I was pretty sure I was dead. I had gotten in some fights before, sure, but I wasn't prepared for this. Those dudes, they both packed a big punch.
For the millionth time that day I was paying for not f*cking paying attention to my surroundings. Maybe if I had heard the dudes I wouldn't have turned down this stupid alley.
What was worse was that I had taken the wrong turn on top of all that somewhere on my journey here. As I glanced around, I realized I had no idea where I was.
The lights were dimly lit in the alleyway and I must have lost my glasses on the way down. I could tell that the alley led into a dead end and that I had fallen next to what I assumed was a dumpster, it looked more like a green blob to me.
My head was aching terribly so I timidly reached up and touched my head. My fingers came back wet and sticky, painted with my blood.
Are you f_cking serious Keenan? Why don't you just go jump off a d_mn bridge while you're at it!
I wanted to just lay there and never get up as I stared up at the sky. The sky was beautiful tonight, an inky black mess dotted with stars. My dad liked looking at the stars. I wondered if he was up there with them.
I loved my father. He was an amazing man, always there for the family. I remember when I came out as gay and how he had had my back, saying that it didn't matter to him whether his son liked p_ssy or d_ck, I was still his son. My mother wasn't so accepting, but I didn't like to think about her. When my father, a retired soldier on call, was told to come back to the battlefield, we were all heartbroken. When we received the slip telling us he was missing in action, everyone in my family grieved.
Thinking about my dad only made me feel worse. I felt like crying. I really did. My body hurt, I was lonely, and I was cold. No one was there to watch.
That's when I surfaced into the real world again. There were people there to watch- two of them in fact.
When their blurry figured started to come close to me, I sat up, leaning against the dumpster. I was immediately dizzy, black spots dotting my vision.
"Woah there- f_ck, please don't beat the sh_t out of me," I mumbled, feeling around for my glasses.
I was met with dead silence. D_mn, I'm going to be mugged now, aren't I? As my hands finally found my glasses, I slid them onto my face, peering up at my abusers.
I hadn't noticed before, but those two hunks were smoking hot. An inappropriate thought, but I was a horny 24 year old, what did you expect?
They both took two steps forward and I gulped. Both of them were rippling with muscles. The one to the left was taller, with piercing bluegray eyes that seemed calculating and cold. He had thick, nicely shaped eyebrows, a sharp jawline, and pink lips that were pursed. A scar stretched across his left eye down to his lips, but it almost seemed to heighten his handsomeness. He had a hair of short cropped locks, a sandy brown color. He seemed to be the brains of the duo.
That would make the guy to the left the brawn. He did seem a little more muscular than his buddy. He seemed a little bit more laid back, too, and what almost seemed like concern flashed in his emerald green eyes. His hair was black, maybe a few strands graying. His features weren't so severe, but they were still beautiful. I couldn't help but be in awe of the two.
"You okay, little dude?" A gruff voice asked. Sir Brawn, I decided to call him.
Who was he talking to though? I glanced around. No one was here. Was he talking to his friend he almost beat up? Then I realized who he was addressing. I'm a real idiot, aren't I?
I shakily stood, my legs wobbling beneath me. I licked my lips, steadying myself with the dumpster.
"'M fine, I'll sleep it off. Please don't shank me and take my wallet, all my credit cards are maxed out anyway," I stammered.
The two dudes glanced at each other. Aw sh_t, they caught my lie. I had two hundred bucks on one, not much, but you know. I'm sure they didn't care.
I tried to take a step forward, maybe to attempt running away, when the world spun. Mr. Brains said something, but it sounded as if he was speaking to me underwater.
I crumpled to my knees, gasping. I had to get out of here, I had to...
I made one last attempt to crawl away before my vision darkened and the world want black. I was pulled into unconsciousness, sure to wake up bleeding to death and broke.
F_ck my life.
