Laughter erupted from the tunnel nearest Nathaniel. Not a happy or joyful laughter, but one that was mocking. The usual kind of laughter that could be heard around here. The voices easily carried in the cavern like area where they worked deep underground. His feet led him in the direction of his coworkers voices.

"Some child of light was at my door when I got home from work the other day," The tall slim man said the word 'light' like it was the most disgusting thing he could think of. "I kid you not they tried to talk to me about the prophecy."

A short stocky woman leaned forward, "What did ya do, Jerry?"

"Toss em, out?" A wide shoulder man about Nathaniel's age, shoved against the cool wall.

"I thought about it, Montoya." He nodded to the wide shoulder man. Jerry looked at the woman, "Let me tell you, Tina, it was gold! I told her that I didn't have no use for the day or light and that she could take it and leave the city for all I cared. She looked like she was gonna cry." More laughter rose from the trio, as they decided to get back to work farther down the tunnel.

Nathaniel stopped his walking, then turned back around to get back to his own work. The prophecy was something that was never discussed in detail. For all of Nathaniel's eighteen years of life he had never actually heard what the words of this supposed light loving prophecy actually were. All the older adults seemed to know. Whether they really did or where just acting big and know at all, he had no way of knowing.

The city, and maybe the world (though he'd never left the city limits), worked with two separate time tables. There was the day lighters and the night creepers. He was a night creeper. Though the actual citizens preferred to call themselves children of darkness. They were a part of the shadows. Which helped make their job all the more easier.

"Nathaniel!" A voice as rough as the huge gravel stones under foot, rumbled through behind Nathaniel.

"Yes, sir, Mr. Briggs, sir." Nathaniel did an about face, & stood at ready to hear out his authority figure.

"You've done enough for today, go on home, before it gets daylight out." Mr. Briggs gave a quick nod, then vanished down a nearby walk way, instantly becoming one with the shadows.

Nathaniel made his way quickly home, ready to finally get some sleep. Daylight would be here soon, and there was no way he wanted to be watching the dawn of a new day.

"Hello." A soft voice came behind him, as he had finally reached his apartment door and was unlocking the front door.

Nathaniel turned around to see a girl, maybe around his own age, looking at him. Not only was her clothing bright, but she wore a glowing object around her neck, her face illuminated by a flash light that she carried in her right hand. He instantly knew. This was one of the children of light.

"Have you ever heard of the prophecy?" She asked, her eyes seeming to blaze with emotion.

Nathaniel stared at her, unsure what to say, but feeling a strong yearning to know more about this mysterious prophecy that had some terrified and others laughing and poking fun.

"I have only ever heard of it. Never heard the words." He tried to act as if this wasn't a big deal.

"I can tell you." She smiled, her teeth being so white it nearly made him sick. Yet still he was filled with curiosity. "Let me tell you about it."
