Chapter 26
Thank you all so much for 4K reads! I really appreciate it and I'm so glad how many of you enjoy this book! Today was also my last day of school so here's an extra chapter! <3
-----------------------
Wind tugged at the sides of his open hoodie, he pulled the sleeve of the black fabric down to cover the bandages. His vision faded in and out of blurriness as tears built up and fell.
He stumbled along the sidewalk, numb with emotion and unsure of where he was going. A light drizzle of rain had started to fall as he made it to the end of his street.
It was like all of his problems had rushed up and piled on top of him, he didn't know what to do. He just wanted to curl up on the wet concrete and do what normal teenagers do. Cry.
He wanted to cry, to let his emotions and take control and just cry away all his pain, but he couldn't, his head wouldn't let him.
Demons don't cry, Evan repeated to himself over and over again. Demons don't cry, demons brush everything off, they don't care. You're a demon, you're mad at everything, you don't give a shit. Demons don't get sad, they get happy, smile, just fucking smile!
"I CAN'T!" He screamed, somehow ending up in some park. He vaguely recognized it, but everything hurt as he sunk to his knees, holding his head like it hurt. "I can't do it....I can't fucking smile..."
He slumped over onto the ground, the wet blades of grass soaking his clothing with the help of the rain. Somehow, he managed to pull out his phone, his hand hovered over two contacts.
Craig and Jonathan. What do I pick? Craig is the obvious choice, but if I call him, he'll prove his point. It won't ever stop bugging me, but I can't let Jonathan see or hear me like this.
With a bit of newfound anger and hatred, Evan dialed and waited for Jonathan to answer.
Ring, ring.
"Jonathan? Please, come pick me up. I-I.....I need you."
---------------------
Craig tugged at his hair, he shouldn't had let Evan walk out that door. Why did always say the wrong things?
Because he had been saying the wrong things since he was little, and Evan had just moved in.
He had never known that was how Evan felt when he was with them, he never knew his best friend had felt alone, like no one cared about him.
But thinking about it, it was true, he had always disregarded his friend's feelings towards parties and social events, and maybe if he hadn't, Evan would still be at home, back in Hell. He wouldn't have come to Earth to be a guardian, he'd have his parents to himself, and maybe things would be different.
Everything would be different without Evan, who had always supported him no matter what, cheering him on in whatever he did.
It never occurred to him that Evan wanted attention too, he had never asked for it.
Because he never felt like he would get it.
Chilled gave him attention, he liked Chilled, always smiled around him, cracked jokes, let him hug him.
Everything was obvious, but Craig had been oblivious, he had always been oblivious.
-------------------------
"Evan? Yeah, I'm here, where are you?" Jonathan spoke into the phone as his eyes scanned the surroundings, looking for his friend.
"I...I don't know." Evan's voice scared him a bit, it sounded so unsure and scared, like it wasn't even him anymore.
"Just try to look around, ok? Try for me." Rain was splashing into his eyes as he looked around.
"I'm near a bench, I think. The swing set is near me..." Evan replied, his voice still unsure.
Jonathan looked in that direction, and sure enough he saw Evan curled up on the ground. He hung up the phone and ran over.
"Evan!" He crouched down next to him and wrapped his arms around his friend. "I'm here, I'm right here."
After a few seconds, Evan wrapped his arms around Jonathan as well and whispered in a faint voice. "Thank you."
And instead of answering Jonathan just held him tighter.
--------------------------
Craig: Evan?
Craig: Evan, I'm sorry. Please come home.
Craig: you're scaring me, please
Craig: I'm so sorry about what I said, so so sorry. Just come home, we talk about this
Craig: Evan, please answer me, please, I can't lose you
You have 18 missed calls from Craig.
------------------------------
He sunk to the ground, leaning against the closed door of his bedroom, replaying everything over in his head. Evan was off who-knows-where and Craig was left to deal with everything he did wrong.
It was like a huge revelation moment for him, because he finally got a glimpse of what Evan always thought. He got the meaning behind almost every glare, every snappy remark, every sour mood. Yet, it didn't feel good to know.
Demons don't really reflect on themselves like this, it must be the human influence, usually they forget about a really bad argument after a few days. They pretend it didn't even happen.
But this one did happen, and it's impossible to forget.
You shouldn't have brought up his parents this morning, you knew this would happen. He was right, you always think it's about you.He thought to himself, staring at the lock screen of his phone with little hope of receiving a message.
"Evan, I hope you're okay. Wherever you are."
-----------
He clutched Jonathan's arm like he was the only thing keeping him alive, and maybe if he was human, Jonathan would be. But guardians can't get suicidal, because they have to put their assignments first.
"Crap, I think my parents just got home, put your hood up and look down, I got you." Jonathan said, turning to Evan. Despite what he said, he pulled his friend's hood up, and grabbed his arm, about to pull him towards the house when Evan let out a small whimper.
Jonathan immediately dropped his arm, then carefully gripped further up on his arm and pulled the sleeve back. He saw the bloody bandages underneath and thought the worst.
"Evan..." He started, but the boy in front of him cut him off.
He flipped his forearm up, so Jonathan could see where the blood was coming from. "Relax, I just broke a mirror and cut myself. Craig put the bandages." Then he tugged his sleeve down once again.
Satisfied, Jonathan grabbed his other arm and pulled him inside. His parents were pacing around the kitchen when the door closed.
They turned to him with relief and concern. "Jonathan! Sweetie, where were you? And who's this?" His mother asked, eyeing the boy next to him.
"This is Evan, he needed me to pick him up, he got into a fight with his brother and needed a place to stay. He's my friend, and he's tired." Jonathan explained, hoping his parents wouldn't ask any more questions about the boy who was once again clutching his arm.
His mother's face softened as she saw how scared his friend looked, and she nodded. "Of course, call me if you two get hungry."
Jonathan lightly tugged on his arm to indicate they were about to move, and he led him upstairs to his room. When Jonathan had closed the door, Evan pulled down his hood, and Jonathan got a good look on how his face looked.
His eyes were puffy, there were faint traces of tears running down his cheeks, and sadness pooled in his dark brown eyes, but he still gave a small smile.
"I look like a mess don't I?" He joked, chuckling softly as he shivered with coldness. Jonathan noticed and walked over to his closet.
He pulled out a black pullover hoodie and a pair of dark gray sweatpants. "Here." He said, handing them to Evan. "The bathroom is right through there and you can even take a shower if you want. I'll have my mom wash your clothes for you, too." He offered, pointing in the direction of his bathroom.
Evan nodded, shrugging off his jacket and handing it to him. It was the first time he hadn't worn it around him, and he had forgotten about the bandages. "We can redo those later, too."
Evan shuffled into the bathroom to change, while Jonathan sat down on his bed, tired and confused. Evan had just called him, completely in tears about an argument he had with Craig, and now he was staying at his house.
He hoped he didn't screw it up.
