Questions
Oliver sat on the couch next to Bruce who was reading a book. Oliver was curled up to Bruce, blonde mess of hair falling almost over his eyes now, head resting on Bruce's right leg, the closest one to the 8-year-old boy. Oliver had awful thoughts plaguing his mind the past few days, it left him in a cruddy, unmotivated mood.
He glanced up to the occupied adult, watching him a few moments. He had been with Bruce nearly 4 months now and he was decently well warmed up to the male figure now, he knew he could talk to him, get comfort from him, but that didn't make the thoughts he had been having any easier to get out of his mouth.
"Bruce?"
Bruce glanced down to him and put his finger in the book to mark his place before he looked fully to the boy curled up practically on his lap, "Yes, Oliver?"
Oliver hesitated to go on with what was on his mind, he was grateful for his adoptive father's patience with him. Joker would've smacked him by now, rushing him along, telling him to speak up or stop wasting his time. The more minutes that stretched on though, the more Oliver felt nervous to ask. Bruce frowned as he watched the boy struggle and eventually sighed softly, fully shutting the book after having slid his bookmark in between the pages.
"Oliver, you can talk to me about anything, what's wrong?" he gently and softly asked.
Bug-green colored eyes filled with tears for a moment, quickly, he rubbed at them, almost lifting his head up until he felt a hand petting his hair gently. This coaxed him to keep his head there and the next sentence from Bruce made the tears fall.
"There's nothing at all wrong with crying, Oliver."
Oliver whimpered softly and gave a pitiful hiccup, "B-Bruce," he repeated, "am I..... b-bad?"
Bruce blinked slightly, pausing his petting a few seconds before shaking his head gently, "Of course not, you're actually a very good boy."
Oliver gave a weak laugh that morphed into another soft cry, "What about who my parents a-are?"
"Your parents don't define you," Bruce mumbled gently setting the book aside and lifting Oliver up gently so he rested on his chest. Oliver nuzzled into his shoulder a moment, before peeking out, tears still trickling down his cheeks.
"Was it my fault Ma a-and Pops were locked away...? Was it something I did?" Bruce shook his head again, gently rocking with him.
"Of course not, you're just a little boy. You had no control over that situation, Oliver. It doesn't matter what your father had told you," he reassured. Oliver sniffled hesitating to ask the next thing, the biggest thing bothering his mind and thoughts.
"I-is it bad th-that I miss my parents?" Oliver sniffled again and continued on before Bruce could answer, "I-I know everyone says they're bad and that Pops hurts me and stuff a-and I know it's dumb th-that I miss them but I can't h-help it," he hiccupped again, "I-I just feel sad without h-him!"
"Oliver...." Bruce said softly, when the boy didn't look up to him, he took his chin gently between his fingers. He paused seeing Oliver wince but he tilted his head up gently and slightly.
"Hey.... listen, bud. There's nothing wrong with you missing your parents, ok?"
"But they're bad guys! Were bad to me! I shouldn't miss them! Its stupid and silly to!" he insisted with another cry.
"Its normal to, Oliver. Its ok to. You feel lonely and sad, mostly all kids who have their parents taken away miss them. No matter how they were to them. Its normal to want that relationship and love."
Oliver whimpered a little as his lip trembled a bit.
"Do you think they miss me too? A-and think about me?" Bruce hesitated to answer that. He didn't want to upset Oliver more but he didn't want to lie either. Eventually he formed an answer using the most gentle voice he could.
"I don't know. There's not really a way to tell that, but I can assure you that one day they'll realize their mistake and will indeed miss you."
"B-Bruce?" Oliver whimpered out again.
"Yes?" Bruce mumbled laying his chin on his head gently.
"I-is it normal too, to feel so sad?"
"Yes, it is," he assured softly.
"D-do," Oliver paused to swallow another cry now that he was starting to calm down under Bruce's gentle words, "do you think that one d-day they will escape and take me b-back?" Bruce hesitated again but asked softly.
"Do you want to go back to them?"
"I-I don't know," Oliver hiccupped, "like.... I know they hurt me but...... they're my parents, I....... I still love them, I think...."
Bruce nodded, shifting again to lay on the couch, letting the 8-year-old boy rest on top of him on his chest, keeping an arm around him gently.
"It'll be up to you, Oliver. If you really do feel happy with them, I won't stop you, but you do need to keep in mind that they hurt and used you. That you don't deserve this. You deserve love and if they don't and can't and won't provide that for you then you don't need them. Also know, that you'll always have me and I'll protect you always. You and your little heart."
Oliver sniffled a final time, "Thanks Bruce," he whispered.
"You're welcome, baby boy..... do you want me to read you a story?" Oliver looked up to Bruce and nodded, Bruce carefully got up and moved to the bookshelf, Oliver's section specifically. There weren't many books and most were small, since Oliver had been enrolled into school only for a near three months, he really struggled with reading.
"Which one, Olive?" Oliver scanned the books over before pointing to one of the larger books made up of a collection of multiple of ones by Dr. Seuss, "Good choice," Bruce praised as he grabbed the book, returning to the couch where he laid down with Oliver again and opened the book, starting to read until Oliver dozed off into a nap.
(A/N: I wanted to write this because A) I was itching to do an One Shot. B) A lot of the feelings Oliver faces in this, I currently am too, though mine are brought on by a breakup rather than anything parent related. I thought it may help me feel better and while it didn't fully, I wanna say that it may not feel like it but things will get better. It'll take time but the pain you feel is temporary. And there always is someone who loves and cares about you. I do. I don't care if we never talked before, if you stumbled across this book and gave never read any of my others, or if you've read most, all, or some. I still care about you and love you because everyone deserves that and if anyone ever needs or wants to talk about something in their life, my PMs are open. I hope you enjoyed and have a great day/night.)
