ONE
(A/N) THANKS FOR ACTUALLY LOOKING AT MY STORY PAL. If you don't care about back stories and want to get right to the Hamilton characters, just skip right up to chapter three. If not, I hope you enjoy!
You open your eyes to see yourself sitting in a small garden behind a large log cabin. Did it work? Your eyes are still adjusting to the light when it suddenly comes into your view that a gun is pointed at your face. The person holding the gun is a tall woman in a plain dress and smock. Two small children are watching you while hiding behind her.
"Who are you, and why are you in my garden?" she demands. You slowly stand up, not wanting to provoke her, and answer, "My name is (Y/N) and I..." Should tell that you are actually from 2017, and you just invented a machine to sent you back to here? Or should you lie?
"I don't know. I was just wandering around and must have accidentally gotten into your, ma'am. My apologies," you continue. Lying it is. She takes one look at the jeans and t-shirt you were wearing and asks, "Why are you only wearing undergarments?" You look down at your clothes and realize that it this is the 18th century, what you are wearing is wildly scandalous. You hesitate to answer, so right when you are about to lie again, the women in front of you says, "Never mind, you can tell me later. Let's get you some clothes."
You grab your small backpack/time machine and follow her inside as she watches you warily.
"My name is Samantha Melwill, and this is my home that you stumbled into. My husband, Theodore, is currently in town, but he will be home tonight. Here," she says, opening a wardrobe. "I don't have much, but you need something. Have this one," she says, holding out a blue and brown dress. You try it on, and it fits you well. "Thank you, Mrs. Melwill. I just have a few questions. What is the date?"
Samantha looks at you with a bewildered look on her face, then answers, "It is November 19." "Yes, but what is the year?" you ask again.
Even more confused, she answers, "1779." Overjoyed and excited, you let out a loud, "YES! It worked!" when you notice the startled faces on Samantha and her children. "Oh, I'm sorry, I just very excited that...that my calendar works! I'm terribly sorry. May ask one more question?" Samantha nods her head, so you ask, "Which way would be town?" You decide to avoid asking where you are, after all, if the time machine was precise, you would be exactly where your apartment is, in the middle of New York City. Plus, you want to avoid confusing anybody anymore than you need to.
"Oh, no (Y/N). You can not go into town now! It is almost evening, and too dangerous and far for a young lady to walk alone. You can stay here with us tonight, then Theodore with give you a ride tomorrow." It doesn't seem like you can argue with her, so you thank Mrs. Melwill for the hospitality and ask if there is anything you can do to help. She brings you over to the kitchen, and you earn your keep by helping her prepare dinner.
Looking at the two little girls playing with dolls on the other side of the room, you ask, "What are your daughters' names?" Samantha smiles at you, and answers, "The oldest is Elisabeth, and the youngest is Marybeth. We also have a son named Theodore, after his father. He joined the revolution on his 16th birthday, which was five months ago, but we haven't seen him since." She stops chopping carrots for a second to wipe away a tear.
"I'm sorry, ma'am, I shouldn't have asked," you say apologetically. She carries on with the slicing of the carrots and replies, "No, (Y/N), it's not your fault, I brought it up. We still receive his letters, so he is alive. I just worry about him."
Suddenly, the door flies open, letting in a blast of cold air. In walks a tall, large man carrying a bunch of parcels and whistling a happy tune. "Papa!" the little girls shouted, jumping up and running to meet him. He closes the door with his foot, and drops all of the parcels on the small dining room table.
"Theodore Melwill! You take those packages off the table immediately, and put them on our bed!" Samantha shouts at her husband. "Of course my love!" he replies, sweeping the parcels back up into his arms and dropping them onto a bed. He walks into the kitchen and jumps when he sees you. He smiles at you cautiously, then shoots his wife a questioning look. She pulls him aside and you watch them whisper back and forth for a minute or two. Then they turn back to you and Theodore says, "It's a pleasure to have you staying with us, (Y/N)!"
While you all eat dinner, you think back to a few hours ago, back in 2017. You made the whole time machine yourself. After working out all the problems with the main travel system, you attached a lightning rod and waited for a storm. You had to wait quite a while, because even if there was a storm, you wouldn't always get struck by lightning. But now it had finally worked, and you were in 1779. If only the lighting strike didn't fry the travel system. Everything you put in your backpack was fine though
After dinner, Mrs. Melwill showed you where you would sleep, and before your head hit the pillow your were fast asleep.
(A/N) I know, horrible, but thank you for actually reading! It will get better. I hope.
