Chapter 35
Barney and Yellow were out again. It was raining heavily, so no one could see them through the fog and the sheets of water pouring from the sky.
Nobody but Boss.
He was sharp. All his senses and his attitude. And he had his beady little eyes right on Yellow. He would not lose again. For Navaeh's sake. The girl was getting bigger every day, and Boss would not miss her childhood.
"Come on, get him!" Boss hissed into his radio.
"Yes Boss!" A voice responded.
Immediately men were on the move. Boss watched them stealthily approach. They had a new game plan. No guns, no running at them all at once. Because of the boy's power, they had to catch him off his guard. Boss was not going to lose any more men on this retarded little white boy's magic tricks! But there was something more to Boss' plan. Something he hadn't even told them.
He expected them to die. That was just the truth. After all he had seen Red and the other colors do, he didn't think they could survive an attack from him at all. But he did expect them to weaken the boy. Maybe even hurt him. Hurt him bad enough, Boss hoped, to let him finish the boy off.
So he watched his men march to their deaths. Letting them run in behind Yellow and his lover. He hoped that they would kill the boyfriend first. In fact, he had ordered them to do so. Maybe the emotional trauma of seeing his partner being murdered would throw him off. Long enough for them to do serious damage. Besides, Boss had seen this Yellow. He was a joke. A child. He spent all day making flower crowns, watching cartoons, and singing. He was the least competent of all the colors. From what Boss had seen, Yellow was a god damn idiot. He would be the easiest color to kill off.
He heard a scream from the streets. Yellow's lover was falling, blood gushing and falling onto the pavement. It formed a puddle, running through the cracks in the sidewalk and down into the storm drain. Yellow was crying, he was screaming and cowering backwards.
Boss grinned. His favorite color.
Blood

Yellow could not believe his eyes. Barney was laying on the sidewalk, his eyes fluttering and gasping for air. It was the most horrible thing that Yellow had ever seen in his short and innocent life. All the colors were screaming in his head, giving him a migraine with their noise. But he didn't feel it. His head was already spinning. His world was crashing around him. Barney had been fucking shot. And he had stopped moving. He screamed the only word that was in his mind. The only thing that his brothers and sisters could say.
"BARNEY!" He screamed.
Yellow was scared. He was terrified. He panicked. This was his first time feeling fear. He was the color of happiness. But when he was standing there, staring at the crippled body of his lover, he couldn't transform. Purple was stuck. Maybe he had disappeared into the Darkness at the sight of blood. Yellow didn't blame him. But that meant he was stuck.
He had to fight the Black Leopards on his own.
With a cry of fear, Yellow threw his hands out to defend himself. Of course, this didn't threaten the men, armed with bats and guns and knives. Yellow needed to tap into his powers. Withdraw his inner magic, whatever that was. He hoped it was a magic sword. Or a magic yellow car Yellow could load Barney into so he could drive them to a hospital.
But all he could summon up was a marble.
A marble. About the size of a dime, pastel, butter yellow with swirls of metallic gold. It was pretty, but it made Yellow angry. A marble! A MARBLE?! What was he going to do with a marble?! Throw it at them?!
But instead, he held onto it desperately, clutching it up to his chest. Right over his heart.
As soon as the marble felt his heartbeat, the air began to change. Intense, hot, and full of acidity. The air began to pulse, the ground shaking beneath them. The Black Leopards stepped back, fearing Yellow's magic. But they were... Stuck. They couldn't move. They were getting so... Tired. Their energy was completely sapped from them. No, really. It was actually being stolen from them. Long golden ribbons of pure energy being pulled from their bodies forcefully. Ropes of it being yanked directly from their hearts and channeling through Yellow's little marble and disappearing into his body, making his heart glow so vibrantly it lit up his chest. Yellow looked so scared. Barney was amazed. As well as a little intimidated.
They fell. One by one. The ribbons getting thinner as Yellow drew more and more energy from their bodies. "Stop!" He shouted. "Stop it!"
But he couldn't control his powers. He kept sucking it in, unable to simply tear the marble away from his body. Yellow tried. He tried so hard. But it didn't matter. He couldn't stop. All he could do was watch in terror as he tapped out the last of their life force.
He fell to his knees, screeching and tearing at his hair. He was a murderer now. Lives had been taken. Blood was on his hands.
Literally. Barney's blood covered him at this point. He heaved Barney up onto his lap and examined his wound. There was some little metal pieces sprayed down in back, arms, and neck. There was a lot of blood. But the entrance wound was elsewhere. It was in his shoulder. Yellow sighed with relief. If he could get them to a hospital Barney would live. "Oh thank god." Yellow sobbed.
"Might want to wait on the thanking." A voice called. "You know what they say, don't count your chickens before they hatch."
Yellow looked up to see a black form looming over him. A shadow in the rain. He wore a black trench coat, black boots, and a gas mask, giving him a threatening appearance, especially with the assault rifle slung over his shoulder.
"Hello, Yellow." The man said. "I'm the leader of the Black Leopards. And I'm here to fucking murder you."
Yellow gasped, setting Barney down off to the side. "Don't worry." Yellow said. "I... I'll be right back."
His voice was shaking with fear, and he was certain he was going to die. But.... He couldn't just let Barney die. Barney needed him. He would not abandon the man he loved.
Boss snickered. "You're pathetic." He told Yellow.
"I know." Yellow sobbed. "I'm sorry. I... I know."
Boss hesitated. But only for a moment. He knew it was wrong. But Navaeh was waiting. He started throwing punches. Yellow cried and took them. He couldn't block them. He knew that. So he just feebly held his arms up, pleading for him to stop.
"Stop crying!" Boss shouted. "Fight me!"
"I can't!" Yellow exclaimed. "I'm sorry!"
Boss grunted, kicking Yellow across the face. Yellow went limp, flying backwards from the force of the kick. "I'm sorry..." He repeated.
"Barney."
Barney was bleeding out, looking on helplessly. His heart was breaking. Yellow was being beaten up and there was nothing that he could do to help. Nothing. It felt like he had abandoned the one he loved the most. Left him to die at the hands of a murderer. And yet Yellow was still apologizing. To his attacker, to himself, to Barney. He wished that he was dead. Dying would have been better than seeing Yellow like this.
"Help me." Yellow whispered to himself.
Boss took a knife out, ready to stab Yellow.
When Yellow's eyes flew wide open, revealing a flash of magenta.
His hair grew out, changing color, his skin paling into a soft pink. Pink was there. And she looked pissed off.
She jumped up off of the ground and started to fight back. She was quick. Light on her feet and violent as hell. Pink seemed to like aiming for the neck and face. Punching and tearing with her hands while her feet tried to kick at Boss' gut. Once she landed, digging her foot under his ribs and pushing him back. Her wavy pink hair swirled around her as she leapt forward, screaming at her victim.
Boss held up his knife, getting her in the side. Barney gasped weakly, watching Boss grab Pink by her beautiful hair and smash her into the brick wall beside them. But Pink wasn't even shaken. She pushed herself off the brick and back into the fight.
"I won't forgive you!" Pink screamed as Boss jabbed his knife at her. "They might have, but I won't!"
She was fighting for her life. Her head began to throb. She was losing too much blood to keep fighting. She would soon collapse. Pink thought of her brothers, her boyfriend, the life she was losing. If he won, Barney would die, and they'd lose the love of their life.
Green, give me strength. She pleaded.
He tried, she could tell he was trying. All he could give her was a small boost of adrenaline. But that was enough. It took the edge off of the pain and gave her the energy to keep going. Pink growled and lunged again, landing one last punch.
Barney watched, unbelieving as Boss toppled to the ground, how he dropped his knife as he fell. Could this be it? Had Pink won? He held his breath and said a quick prayer.
Boss fell screaming. Pink grabbed his knife quickly. Snatched it right out of midair. She was falling with him. Right on top of him. Without even thinking, Pink buried the knife in his stomach.
He gasped, grabbing onto her hair. Boss' eyes were wide and full of fear. For the first time, Pink could see him clearly. He looked so... Young. He couldn't be much older than her. Probably the same age, actually. He was just a child. Now he was dying in a dark alleyway in the ghetto of Seattle.
"You did it." He groaned, coughing up a bit of blood. "You beat me."
"I did." Pink whispered.
"I know." He gasped. "I know I was wrong. I knew from the very beginning."
"Then why?!" She cried, clutching the front of his shirt. "Why did you do it?!"
"Because my mother stole my greatest treasure." He explained. "Please... Rescue my little girl."
"What?!" Pink was confused. "Your little girl?"
"My daughter." He confirmed. "My mother stole her from me... Wait... Take this."
He pulled a floppy disk out of his jacket pocket.
"My mother..." He coughed in between every word. His voice was getting softer. "...Make.... her.... pay."
He passed out after those words. Pink knew that he was still alive, but he was taking his last breaths. Her work her was done. Now she needed to save her lover. At first, Pink hesitated. The disk was probably nothing. Maybe a simple file. Maybe a video. Maybe some disturbing prank. But Pink's instincts told her it was important. She grabbed the floppy disk and shoved it in her pocket. Then she spun around and tried to get up. But she couldn't. She was too damaged from the fight. Instead she crawled over to Barney and grabbed his cellphone.
"Police! Oh thank god, help us!" She screamed into the receiver.
"Ma'am, calm down. Please tell us where you are. Help is on it's way."
Pink quickly stuttered out the name of the street they were on and told them that they were in an alleyway. There were a lot of bodies. The lady told her to stay on the phone and make sure that her boyfriend was still alive. So pink crawled over to him.
"Barney!" She cried, stumbling and wincing in pain. "Hold on!"
But Barney had already fallen asleep in pool of blood and rain.
