06 | Escape
With the new, soft yellow dress draped over my body, provided by the people here at Mount Weather, I slowly shuffled back into the main room the forty-eight now occupied, tears slid down my cheeks while I struggled to remain calm. A few people in their bunks lifted their heads up as they saw me walking past them, headed straight for Miller, who stood at the end of his bunk a few feet away, hands straightening out the button-up shirt he wore. I quietly sniffled, earning his attention.
Miller's lips fell downward in a saddened expression when he saw the distressed look on my face. His eyes darted to my brother, who sat on a bottom bunk with Monty, his back to the two of us. I locked eyes with Miller.
"Wren, are you o--" Miller's words were cut short as I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him down in a hug, carefully positioning my face in his neck. Without a moment of hesitation, his arms slid around my back, closing the distance between us, and holding me close to his body.
"Okay, listen," I spoke in a low whisper once I was sure I was hidden from the cameras, snapping out of the act I was putting up. "They are watching our every move and this is the only way to talk without them suspecting anything. I need you to make it look like you're comforting me because I'm upset over our friends being gone."
Quick to follow orders, Miller remained quiet, urging me closer in his embrace with one hand rubbing up and down my spine like he was consoling me. His head angled toward mine, deliberately shielding his facial expressions with my hair. I settled myself into his hold, lightly shaking my shoulders every few seconds to give off the appearance of sobbing.
I paused for a few seconds before I continued, "I'm going after our friends. I'm still figuring how to escape, but you're the only person I can trust right now to understand why I have to do this."
"You mean, you're going after Bellamy."
I cracked a weak smile against his neck. "Octavia, Raven, and Finn are out there, too. A lot of our people are and I'm going after them."
"Are you going to tell Jasper?" He questioned under his breath.
My body tensed at the simple question. "No," I answered after a long pause. I sighed, shutting my eyes for a brief second, hating the fact I'll be lying to my own twin. "I know Jasper. He'll try to stop me if I tell him about this. He trusts the people here. I have to do this, Miller. Bellamy would go after me if the roles were reversed."
Miller softly nodded his head against mine, agreeing with my choice not to tell my brother. "Okay, so, what do we need to do?"
I quietly sniffled, focused on convincing my fellow people and the cameras that I was in the middle of crying. "We need to gather as much information on this place as possible without drawing any suspicions on ourselves. I'm going to try to find a safe way out of Mount Weather and while I'm gone, I need you to run things here. Clarke is seen as a huge threat here and no one wants to associate with her. You need to be the leader."
"Everyone's been talking about how she's ruining things for them here like they are scared we'll be kicked out for her actions." Miller tightened his arms around me.
"She's causing too much trouble for herself, but we are going to use it to our advantage. Their focus will be on Clarke and that means we have a better chance of snooping around without getting caught." I took a deep breath. "When I'm gone, just stay on Dante's good side. If he sees that I trust you then he will trust you as well."
"How do you plan on escaping? They aren't just going to open the doors for you and they have high security on this place."
"I know," I sighed. "I have an idea, but it's going to be tricky."
The dinner bell rang throughout the room, signaling everyone in Mount Weather that is was time for them to head to the dining room. I tensed up in Miller's arms as our friends jumped up from their beds and seats, excitedly moving out of the room.
"Let me guess, you want to use Maya."
I blew hot air out of my nose, wishing I didn't have to go this route for my plan. "She's my best bet right now. She trusts my brother and I know I can get her to trust me."
Jasper would hate me once he found out using Maya was a part of my plan the whole time. She was an innocent bystander in all of this. Maya didn't deserve to be used by me, but I didn't have any other choice right now. Our friends needed me. Maya and Jasper may have just met each other, but the two definitely felt something toward each other. I hated knowing I might destroy that.
"I need you to do me one more favor," I whispered to Miller.
"Anything, Wren."
"When I leave, don't let my brother get in trouble for it. Tell everyone I had a breakdown one night or something and I just found my way out. I don't want Jasper to lose the connection he has with Maya because of me." I hurriedly explained to him, knowing it might be a bit suspicious if we waited around too long after the bell went off.
My brother and Monty's laughter filled the air nearby. Their voices grew closer to us, sounding like they were too involved with their own conversation to notice Miller and I standing in the middle of the room, embracing.
"No one is going to believe you had a breakdown," Miller pointed out, lowering his voice even more. "All of us know you're stronger than that. You manage to stay in control of your emotions even when you are at rock bottom."
"Our people don't have to believe it," I told him. "The people of Mount Weather and Dante just do."
"If they have that chocolate cake again tonight, I swear I'm eating five slices-- Wait, Wren?" Jasper's voice went from being laced with excitement to concern when he spotted me. "Hey, are you okay?"
"We'll talk later," I mumbled to Miller before I slowly pulled away from him, back to acting like I was crying over our missing friends. "Yeah, yeah. I'm okay," I replied, quick to wipe away the few tears I squeezed out at the last minute. "I just--"
Jasper's face fell when he saw the distressed look on my face. He reacted quickly by reaching his arms out to bring me into his embrace instead of Miller's. Guilt washed over my body. I melted in my brother's hold, mentally hating myself for keeping such a big secret from him. I held onto him, tightly, terrified of how much time will pass until I see him again after I escape from Mount Weather.
"We all miss him," Jasper muttered to me.
At this moment, he only assumed I was upset about Bellamy being gone and I didn't dare let him think any differently. The best thing I could do for Jasper was to keep him in the shadows about my plans.
Around my brother's shoulder, I met Miller's gaze with a quick determined look, understanding what the two of us needed to do. Suddenly, Monty's stomach loudly growled.
I quietly laughed at the noise, shifting out of Jasper's embrace to smile at Monty.
"Oh, uh, sorry," Monty apologized, turning a shade of red.
"We should go eat." I patted my brother's chest twice.
"Are you sure?" Jasper frowned at me.
I nodded. "Yeah, I'm okay." I looped my arm through his arm and began to lead him out of the room. "Let's go see if they have that chocolate cake again."
"For the past and the future we serve," Dante spoke the whole dining room. He sat at the main table, holding hands with the people beside him.
"We give thanks," the rest of the room responded in unison along with myself.
I stood on the opposite side of the table, smiling at Harper from across the table while holding hands with Jasper and Miller. Across the table, Clarke's eyes flickered around the room, taking in everyone around the dining room, slightly taken aback by how well adjusted everyone was here. I smiled at her when we made eye contact.
"Good health, good food, and good company. And the blessing of new friends," Dante continued, pausing a brief second to send a smile in our direction."
"We give thanks," everyone recited for the second time.
The room filled with chairs sliding closer to the tables and silverware being picked up in hands, tapping against the bowls and plates with food. Clarke eyed the spoon in my hand, watching as I took a bite of the stew. I nodded at her, encouraging her to follow my lead. Hesitantly, she picked up her own spoon.
I lightly laughed when her face lit up with surprise and delight once she tried it. "It's good, isn't it?"
Clarke let out a breathy laugh, nodding her head.
Jasper bumped his shoulder into mine, grinning. "You know, I think I saw some of that cake on the dessert table."
"Okay, here's what we're going to do," I replied and leaned closer to him. "You distract them and I'll steal the whole thing for ourselves."
An amused laugh came from Maya across the table, eyes trained on the two of us, lingering on Jasper for a few seconds longer. "I don't think that plan would work very well. Besides, I want a piece of it, too."
I flashed her a grin. "Well, if you join in on our plan, you can share it with us."
"Wait," Monty shifted in his seat, resting his left elbow on the table with his spoon dangling between his fingers. "I want to be a part of this."
Jasper side glanced at me before speaking, "We may need to steal two." He held up two fingers and smiled at Maya.
Our group dived into a conversation about how to steal two cakes without anyone noticing. Soon enough, Clarke joined in with us, no longer so tense over everything. She either figured out she needed to accept being here or she learned to do what I was doing; staying under the radar. Dante kept his gaze on her a few times, always giving her a smile like he trusted her a bit more now.
"You know," I spoke up later in the night, leaning back against my chair, pleased with eating all of my stew and bread. I glanced around at my friends sitting near me. "As much as I love having new clothes to wear--" My hand waved at the yellow dress I wore. "I really do miss wearing darker colors. Pastels do not look good on me."
"What? I don't think you look bad." Jasper shook his head. "It is kind of weird to see you in such brighter colors, though. I'm used to you wearing black."
Maya's eyes shifted between us a few times before she spoke up, "I may have some extra clothes that may fit you that I don't wear anymore. I wear dresses a lot now and there are some jeans that may fit you."
I sat up a little straighter at her offer. "Really? That would be amazing."
She peeked at my brother and added, "They've just been sitting in my drawers this whole time, so I wouldn't mind at all. I can bring you to my place tomorrow to look at them if you want."
"I'd love that. Thank you." I grinned back at her, grateful for her nice offer.
Little did Maya know, I was hoping she would suggest something like this, which would grant me the perfect access to her house. She matched my smile, unaware of my true intention of potentially sneaking an extra key card from her parents and getting clothes that would be more fitting for my escape.
XXXX
I'm not a huge fan of the ending, but I still needed that conversation to take place anyways. Also, not much really happened in this chapter. More of just Miller and Wren planning. I promise the next chapter will be better.
Wren is fully prepared to sneak out of Mount Weather somehow. I know exactly how she plans on doing so, too. I can't wait for all of you to find out how she does it.
Sorry again for the much-delayed updates. This writer's block is kicking my butt and I've been working hard to work through it.
Also, can we just take a second to appreciate how different Wren and Clarke's plans are to break out of Mount Weather? I mean, we all know how Clarke does it, but we can already see that Wren is much more sneaky and strategic. She thinks everything out and Clarke kind of just hopes for the best when she does something insane.
Little side note, I posted the first chapter to a new Supergirl story.
Question: How do you think the next chapter will go with Wren going to Maya's place? Do you think Maya will catch her?
So, yeah!
